Befferlands Cottage is a converted two story barn which provides a wonderful and peaceful rural retreat for couples or a family. The well appointed interior benefits from a very spacious sitting room with high vaulted ceilings which leads to an open plan fully equipped kitchen and dining area. The sitting room benefits from a huge picture window which allows light to flood in and the kitchen has the advantage of a stable door. There are two stylish bedrooms both of which benefit from their own bathrroms. A double with an ensuite bathroom with both bath and shower and a twin room with its own bathroom right next door, again with bath and shower. Both bedrooms are recently refurbished and have ample wardrobe space. The cottage has its own parking and a small private garden perfect for a barbecue.

Located amid the rolling hills of the Marshwood Vale – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – there are views of open farmland and plenty of walks along lanes, woods and riverside literally from the front door and across both West Dorset and East Devon. You can walk from the front door of the cottage to the beach in around 30 minutes. In the nearby village of Whitchurch Canonicorum, St Candida’s Church is the only church in England, other than Westminster Abbey, that retains the original medieval shrine and relics of the saint to whom it is dedicated.

Beautiful cottage and such a quiet but convenient location.

The cottage is lovely, well equipped and beautifully furnished. It was so comfortable and the owners Anna and Gerald made me feel so welcome. There were nice little touches too with fresh flowers and home made buiscuits on my arrival. It is conveniently placed for visiting local towns, sightseeing or visiting the beach and Jurassic coast. Overall it is a lovely place to stay.

Lovely cottage and good location

Lovely cottage in a good location. Double bed in the main room was the most comfortable I’ve ever slept on! And it was great to have two separate bathrooms. The lounge could have been a little cosier, I know most people don’t spend much time in the cottage and just use it as a base but I was travelling with 80 year old parents so we spent every evening in. It would have been nice to have seen someone on our departure as well, but overall we loved the place and would definitely come back. Thank you!

Beautiful cottage with lovely facilities and lovely surrounding views. Marred slightly by a problem with the boiler which meant that there was not enough hot water to bathe or shower.

Restful retreat!

Beyond our expectations for a quiet get away! The cottage is tastefully decorated and very comfortable. Kitchen was very useful for meals for the four of us. It was a quiet break from the city and yet we were a quick drive to Lyme Regis for fossil hunting at the beach as well as beautiful walks in the countryside and along the coast. We had a great stay.

Very relaxing location.

We were very happy to stay in this delightful property which matched exactly the description. The rooms were clean and had been well maintained. Layout was perfect with the two bedrooms having their own bathrooms on the ground floor where the washing machine was also located, and the upstairs offering a pleasant view from the sitting room and kitchen. All the electrical appliances were in perfect working order.

We enjoyed visiting the seaside resorts and were pleased to be able to walk our dog on one side of Charmouth beach although I believe this is restricted during July and August.

We did not venture far and so cannot comment on many restaurants although The George Inn in Chideock was excellent for fresh and beautifully cooked fish.

Charmouth is a beautiful seaside village, world famous for fossil hunting and guided fossil hunts are available. West Bay (Bridport) is 7 miles away where both mackerel and crab fishing can be had along with rib and speedboat trips to and from Lyme Regis.

Charmouth offers a chemist, small supermarket, butcher, bakery, post office, General Stores, restaurants, hairdresser, gift and ice cream shops with a speciality fossil shop directly at the beach along with a coastal heritage centre. There are also two pubs.

Befferlands Cottage is well placed for two fantastic farm shops, to the west on the A35 to Bridport is Felicitys Farm Shops with a wide range of local products and to the east on the A35 to Honiton is Millers which offers fabulous fresh produce and is a veritable emporium of French provisions.

The attractive seaside resort of Lyme Regis is close by with its sandy beach, historic harbor and many shops and restaurants. River Cottage HQ is a very short drive away and offers amazing cookery courses or if you would rather not cook yourself visit the River Cottage Canteen in nearby Axminster!

Restaurants in the area include Mark Hix Oyster House in Lyme Regis; Watch House Café in West Bay, Brassica in Beaminster, River Cottage Canteen in Axminster and The Riverside in West Bay. Also worth mentioning are The Anchor in Seatown, Down House Farm in Higher Eype, Soulshine Café in Bridport, The Olive Tree in Bridport and the Stable Pizzeria in Bridport.
