Star Cottage is a traditional Cotswold stone cottage, built in 1845 to house the family of a worker at the local brewery, in the beautiful village of Little Compton. The cottage combines two original cottages and is one of a row of six on a quiet lane, with little traffic apart from occasional horses. It is set back from the lane, with a pretty private front garden leading to the front door and a larger secluded garden with pond at the back of the cottage. Little Compton is very peaceful and picturesque, with a beautiful Manor House, a historic Norman Church and an excellent gastro-pub, the Red Lion, just five minutes walk from Star Cottage. There are numerous country walks and many beautiful Cotswold towns and villages are nearby, including Stow-on-the-Wold, Chipping Norton and Moreton-in-Marsh. Daylesford Organic Farmshop is only six miles away and Stratford-upon-Avon, Blenheim Palace, Cheltenham and Oxford are all within easy reach.

The cottage has been the much-loved weekend retreat of its owners and their friends for some years. It has been lovingly decorated and furnished as a home rather than a holiday let, with an exposed Cotswold stone wall and a lovely wood burning stove in the large, comfortable living room, a separate flag-stone floored dining room, and a well-equipped kitchen with breakfast bar. The character of the cottage is complemented by its modern facilities, including wireless internet access, a landline telephone, two flat screen televisions and a DVD player. There is also a wide range of original artwork on the walls, an original mural in the bathroom and an extensive library of books and DVDs to enjoy while at the cottage.

Star Cottage sleeps a maximum of four people in two rooms, both with king size beds. The secluded enclosed garden at the rear of the cottage is a glorious suntrap to relax in and there is free on street parking on the quiet lane outside the cottage. Star Cottage is an ideal retreat for friends, couples or a small family, looking for a lovely cottage in a beautiful location.

House Rules

Booking and payment

Character Cottages is a marketing agency and we do not own or manage any of the cottages listed on our website. Bookings made via us form a legal agreement directly between you and the property owner.

For bookings commencing more than 10 weeks in advance, a 30% non-refundable deposit is required to confirm the booking. The balance payment is then due 10 weeks prior to arrival.

All payments are made subject to the cancellation policy set out in the standard Booking Conditions.

Security deposits

Security deposits are not required (please note that guests are still liable for any damage or additional cleaning required as a result of their actions).

Occupancy

The maximum occupancy of the property is four guests, at any point during your stay. Unauthorised over occupancy is a breach of our terms and conditions and may result in the cancellation of your booking and additional charges. Please consult us prior to booking if you wish to discuss the possibility of having more than four guests at the property.

Infants who sleep in a cot do not count towards the occupancy figure, however, due to space restrictions, the occupancy figure may only be exceeded by up to one additional infant.

Pets

One medium sized dog or a cat is accepted (there is a cat flap), at a cost of £20 per booking.

For the comfort of future guests, we ask that dogs remain downstairs, stay off the furniture and that no trace of the dog or cat remains after your departure.

Bed linen and towels

Bed linen and towels are provided for guests.

Arrival and departure times

Arrival time is after 4pm and departure time is by 10am. Access is via a key safe, therefore it does not matter if you are arriving late at night.

Heating, fuel and logs

The property has an electric, night storage central heating system.

Electricity is included in the rental price. There is a wood burning stove in the living room and an initial supply of logs is provided from October to February. Further log supplies can be purchased locally.

Services provided

The property has free wireless internet access, flatscreen TVs in the living room and one bedroom, and a DVD player.

There is a telephone at the property (with a bar on international calls). The phone is for occasional use only and the owners reserve the right to charge for additional phone usage.

Guests should be aware that mobile phone reception can be very poor, particularly inside the property.

Parking

Free on-street parking is available on the quiet road outside the property.

Housekeeping

Where a letting exceeds nine nights, a mid-stay clean, bed linen and towel change may be included in the price. Please check with us to confirm. Additional housekeeping services may be available on request.

Child friendly facilities

A travel cot and mattress (without linen), and a high chair are provided.

The property's garden is enclosed, however, please note that it contains a raised pond and children should be supervised in the garden at all times. There is a safety grill available to cover the pond.

Initial consumables

A small quantity of initial consumables is provided for your convenience (eg. tea, coffee, sugar, dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, soap, washing powder, toilet rolls, etc), however, you should not expect the quantity of these provisions to be sufficient for the duration of your stay.

Accessibility, health and safety

This is an old property, however it has been modernised and does not have any unusual accessibility issues. There are two floors in the property, which could pose difficulty to guests with limited mobility, or carrying babies, both in terms of their general movement and their ability to quickly exit the house in the event of an emergency.

The smoke detector operates on a sound only basis and, therefore, those who have serious impairment of hearing may not be able to hear the alarm systems and could be at risk.

Guests with mobility issues should be aware that there is a slight slope from the road to the pavement outside Star Cottage, which can become slippery when wet, however there are steps immediately outside the front gate, which can be used to get from the pavement to the road.

Smoking

No smoking is permitted throughout the property.

Lovely, very comfortable

A very, very well stocked cottage, with everything you could possibly think of. It is very homely and is in a great position for seeing the Cotswolds, Stratford on Avon, Oxford, Blenheim etc. We had a lovely week exploring and cosy nights in with the woodburner. The only issue we found was that the bed in the second bedroom had a larger mattress than the base, which meant my husband spent the week trying not to fall out as it slopes.

The Cotswolds are a range of hills in west-central England, sometimes called the "Heart of England". The name Cotswold means "sheep enclosure in rolling hillsides".

The Cotswolds are characterised by attractive small towns and villages, built of the underlying Cotswold stone (a yellow oolitic limestone). In the Middle Ages the wool trade made the Cotswolds prosperous and some of this money was put into the building of churches, leaving the area with a number of large handsome Cotswold stone "wool churches". The area remains affluent, which has encouraged the establishment of many high quality pubs, restaurants and antique shops.

Car: Little Compton is easily accessed by car, being located a few hundred yards from the A44, one of the main roads running through the North Cotswolds.

Train: The nearest railway station to Little Compton is Moreton-in-Marsh (approximately 4 miles away), which has regular, direct services to London Paddington, with a typical journey time of approximately 90 minutes.
