The lovely quaint fishing villages of the East Neuk such as Pittenweem (with its renowned arts festival), Anstruther, St. Monans and Crail, several good beaches such as at Elie and St. Andrews and the vast open spaces of the Lomond Hills are all within easy reach. In terms of visitor attractions, the area is well served by a number of National Trust for Scotland properties including Kellie Castle, Falkland Palace and Hill of Tarvit and there are some excellent restaurants and bars nearby.

Strathairly Cottage is a charming rural property, which dates from the 1740s when it was formerly the dower house to the Strathairly Estate. The lands of Strathairly are understood to have formed a Knights Templar encampment during medieval times. The house was extended to the north in 1911 in the ‘Arts and Crafts’ style to create the distinctive architectural style that exists today with the feature turret and crow stepped elevations.

Please note that the cottage is located at the far end of a 600m gravel track. We regularly drive down it in our Mini but it does have a few potholes (which we repair on a regular basis) so please get in touch if you have any concerns or questions re the track.

The MOST wonderful cottage in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 9 nights and felt completely relaxed form the moment we arrived. There were Roe deer in the fields as we drove down to the cottage and we saw so many birds in the gardens. The lovely, sandy and quiet beach is just a field away and there are sea views from the cottage and gardens. Inside the cottage is very well equipped and comfortable and a welcome pack was a really nice touch. The area in general has so much to do and all very close by. We visited the Isle of May nature reserve, Tentsmuir forest, National Trust for Scotland properties at Falkland Palace, Hill of Tarvit and Kellie Castle. We also did some lovely walks to Elie and Lower Largo directly from the cottage. St Andrews was also a lovely day out. There was more that we just did not have time to do and this really is the sort of cottage that you need some time to relax in and enjoy the gardens. Highly recommended.

Wonderful three days

A lovely cottage from which to revisit a beautiful part of the UK. Comfortable and well equipped, good views and gardens. Just a short stay needs a longer one to look forward to! Many thanks. Geoff from Worcestershire.

Perfect cottage in perfect location

  • 5 of 5

I visited on my own with two dogs and loved every minute (admittedly helped by unseasonal warm weather which was unexpected, but very welcome) Perfect location to visit East Neuk's attractions, but beware ...like me you may want to leave the car parked at the door, walk on the beach (usually deserted) and coastal path then return to the luxury, peace and tranquility of the Old Stables. Great hosts and possibly the best holiday cottage I have ever used.

Charming Old Stable Cottage

  • 5 of 5

In bleak mid-winter what more can you ask for than very warm and comfortable accommodation.

From the moment you walk through the door into the kitchen everything is just perfect. It is very spacious ad extremely well equipped with a lovely welcoming food basket.

The lounge was so comfortable with a choice of high backed chairs or easy settee.

The Bedrooms upstairs were just superb and the beds so comfortable.

Have to say the dogs enjoyed roaming around the garden and we had plenty of room to play ball with them.

A truly superb holiday cottage and well situated for visiting all the lovely coastal villages and St Andrews if you have the time.

Of course all this is only possible because of the lovely hosts, thanks Claire

Such a wonderful place, we are going back again !

  • 5 of 5

This property was beyond our expectations. I felt right at home as soon as we arrived. A basket from Claire made us feel even more welcome. Her home was very well equipped ,and we needed for nothing.

It is a lovely country spot, close enough so my husband could play a convenient round of golf at the Old Course. Also centrally located to tour Edinburgh and the Scottish Highlands during our week stay.

I loved the beach right behind the house . It is a beachcomber's dream filled with all kinds of shells and beach glass.

So to prove how much we loved our stay last year, we just booked another week for this year.
