The lovely quaint fishing villages of the East Neuk such as Pittenweem (with its renowned arts festival), Anstruther, St. Monans and Crail, several good beaches such as at Elie and St. Andrews and the vast open spaces of the Lomond Hills are all within easy reach. In terms of visitor attractions, the area is well served by a number of National Trust for Scotland properties including Kellie Castle, Falkland Palace and Hill of Tarvit and there are some excellent restaurants and bars nearby.

Strathairly Cottage is a charming rural property, which dates from the 1740s when it was formerly the dower house to the Strathairly Estate. The lands of Strathairly are understood to have formed a Knights Templar encampment during medieval times. The house was extended to the north in 1911 in the ‘Arts and Crafts’ style to create the distinctive architectural style that exists today with the feature turret and crow stepped elevations.

Please note that the cottage is located at the far end of a 600m gravel track. We regularly drive down it in our Mini but it does have a few potholes (which we repair on a regular basis) so please get in touch if you have any concerns or questions re the track.

Perfect Escape

  • 5 of 5

Before I say anything else I just want to say thank you to both Ian and Claire for such a fantastic break. It has been a very long time since we have enjoyed ourselves so much on a short break and it must be said that it was down to Claire and Ian's great efforts.

First of all the location is set in an excellent traveling distance from a number of amenities. The beech is only a stones throw away and when we were there we the full stretch all to ourselves which was just fantastic for walking and for letting loose our very excitable Huskies.

St Andrews is only a 25 minute drive away with all the shopping needs you will require to stock up the fridges and cupboards for your stay. There are some lovely walks right from the front doorstep and plenty more if you are willing to take very short drives to their locations. You will never be short of something to do.

The cottage itself is beautifully maintained and all I can say is that whenever we were looking for something you would have expected to see in your own home you just had to open a drawer or a cupboard drawer and bingo it was there - brilliant Claire! This saved us so much time and there wasn't a 'tut' to be heard.

The property is immaculate and there is a beautifully enclosed garden which was just perfect for our two dogs. We spent some lovely sunny days sitting in the garden listening to the sounds of nature without a car engine or horn in range. This was one of the most relaxing breaks we have had for years.

The cottage has a great layout with all the mod cons you would expect and all in excellent working order, it has excellent facilities, actually far more than I would have expected (we very often found ourselves opening a cupboard and commenting 'great! they have one!).

We would highly recommend staying at this beautifully situated venue and I can say with absolute certainty that Claire and Ian will provide you with some great memories to take home. We will definitely be back to stay again, just for longer next time.

Duncan & Bianca (and Hugo & Mylo of course!)

Beautiful, cosy and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

The Old Stables is a beautifully fitted and located cottage. The owners provided excellent pre-arrival support and the cottage was in order upon arrival - including added touches of a welcome hamper and all household necessities. A 15 minute walk across the field leads to the beach. The log supply was fantastic and we made excellent use of the log burner on a couple of nights. Excellent location for exploring Fife - or just relaxing in the cottage and grounds.

The MOST wonderful cottage in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 9 nights and felt completely relaxed form the moment we arrived. There were Roe deer in the fields as we drove down to the cottage and we saw so many birds in the gardens. The lovely, sandy and quiet beach is just a field away and there are sea views from the cottage and gardens. Inside the cottage is very well equipped and comfortable and a welcome pack was a really nice touch. The area in general has so much to do and all very close by. We visited the Isle of May nature reserve, Tentsmuir forest, National Trust for Scotland properties at Falkland Palace, Hill of Tarvit and Kellie Castle. We also did some lovely walks to Elie and Lower Largo directly from the cottage. St Andrews was also a lovely day out. There was more that we just did not have time to do and this really is the sort of cottage that you need some time to relax in and enjoy the gardens. Highly recommended.

Wonderful three days

A lovely cottage from which to revisit a beautiful part of the UK. Comfortable and well equipped, good views and gardens. Just a short stay needs a longer one to look forward to! Many thanks. Geoff from Worcestershire.

Perfect cottage in perfect location

  • 5 of 5

I visited on my own with two dogs and loved every minute (admittedly helped by unseasonal warm weather which was unexpected, but very welcome) Perfect location to visit East Neuk's attractions, but beware ...like me you may want to leave the car parked at the door, walk on the beach (usually deserted) and coastal path then return to the luxury, peace and tranquility of the Old Stables. Great hosts and possibly the best holiday cottage I have ever used.
