Overview

About the property

Balvaig Cottage is a lovely modernized 2 bedroom cottage with WI-fI set within the tranquility of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. It can comfortably accommodate up to 4 guests and offers an open plan kitchen, dining and sitting area featuring a log burning stove and open views onto the forest.

The cottage is situated in an idyllic location in the Highlands, offering a relaxing stay and ideal for a variety of outdoor activities but within walking distance to the picturesque village of Strathyre and only 10 miles from the historic town of Callander. An off road cycle route passes the cottage to the front (Sustrans Route 7) and the Rob Roy Long Distance Footpath passes though the woodlands to the rear.

Accommodation

Balvaig cottage is fully double-glazed and has a modern programmed electric storage heating system. The heating costs are included in the rental price.

Additional heating is provided from the wood burner in the open plan sitting / dining/ kitchen area. A starter basket of logs is provided in the rental price. Further logs can be purchased from the nearby Strathyre village shop or town of Callander.

The bright sitting room area with the woodburner has full height windows providing wonderful views of the wooded hillside. The modern kitchen has an electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge and dishwasher. The kitchen includes a kettle, toaster, pots and pans, cutlery and crockery and appliances as listed.

There are two bedrooms: 1 x double bed, 2 x single beds (bunk bed). Bedrooms have pillows, duvets and blankets. All bed linen and towels are provided as part of your rental- and your beds shall be made up for your arrival.....

The bathroom has a bath with electric shower over, basin & WC.

There is a back porch which also has a heated floor and provides a useful space for shoes and hanging coats. A small freezer is located in the back porch along with a washing machine with an integrated dryer. A drying rack is also stored in this area.

There is parking space for 2 cars to the front of the cottage (off the main road).

The village of Strathyre, local shop & pub are a short stroll along the roadside pavement or cycle path. Alternatively the back garden gate provides access to woodland walks leading south to the village or north to the lovely Mhor 84 Motel cafe at Kingshouse.

Location

The small village of Strathyre (from the Gaelic “sheltered valley”), lies at the head of Loch Lubnaig (“Crooked Loch”) sheltered by Ben Ledi, Ben Vane and Ben Shian (“Mountain of the Fairies”), just 10 miles from the historic town of Callander. This S shaped glen was chiselled out of the land by the brute force of a glacier during the Ice Age. Beautiful scenery and extensive forests cover the hills on each side of the valley attracting walkers, cyclists all year round and fell runners annually, with the Strathyre Stuc a 'Chroin hill race every May. Highland games are held every July at Lochearnhead. This area is steeped in Scottish history and many stories abound especially of local legend Rob Roy MacGregor whose grave is in the Kirkyard at Balquhidder.

Strathyre village (local shop, playground and pub providing food) is a short 5-10 minute walk away.

Activities

Outdoor activities within the immediate vicinity include woodland walks starting from the cottage (from the gate in the back garden), hillwalking for all levels from a gentle stroll along the former railway line passing along the shores of Loch Lubnaig or more vigorous hillwalking within a short drive from the cottage such as Ben Ledi and the accredited Munros of Ben Vorlich, Ben More and Stuc a ‘Chroin.

There are numerous cycle and mountain bike paths, permit fishing on the River Balvaig and surrounding Lochs, watersports at nearby Lochearnhead, and relaxing boat trips on Loch Katrine. The award winning Go Ape high wire forest adventure course is located at the David Marshall Centre at Aberfoyle. Nearby Callander has a public swimming pool at the McLaren Leisure Centre and challenging golf course set in wooded parkland with spectacular views of Ben Ledi.

Entry

Entry on day of arrival is after 4.00pm and on departure before 11.00 am.

Detailed information regarding entry arrangements for our cottage will be issued approximately 1 week before booked holiday dates. This includes details regarding keys, location and contact numbers for any assistance.

Directions

From Callander, take the A84 towards Crianlarich, for 10 miles. The cottage is located to the north of Strathyre on the right hand side of the road.

Lovely homely cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday in this cosy, comfortable cottage. Tricia had thought of every minute details and it really felt like a home away from home. It was a bliss to be away from the hussle and bustle of our busy city life. Thank you Tricia!

Lovely, light cottage with gorgeous extension

  • 5 of 5

Myself, husband and 1 year old daughter had a fantastic long weekend in Tricia's cottage. It is perfectly situated for accessing cycle paths to Callander and Killin and didn't need to use the car once!

The cottage is on a busy road but it's quiet at night and didn't bother us at all. It was also very well stocked with essentials and welcome bottle of prosecco was greatly appreciated!

Strathyre has a few pubs and cafes to eat in but our favourite was MHor 84, a 10 min cycle away.

A lovely, stylishly upgraded country cottage

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful cottage is easily accessible from Edinburgh or Glasgow, but you get a real feeling of being out in the highlands. The area is well provided with excellent cafes, pubs and eateries. There are some challenging hill walks within easy reach, and a lovely woodland walk right from the back gate. The wood burning stove and bright, open lounge make staying in a delight too. Highly recommended.

Nice location, cosy living room

  • 4 of 5

Nice location on the edge of the friendly village of Strathyre. Lovely walks possible. Some good restaurants, cafés within a short drive. The cottage has a spacious open kitchen/living room with cosy woodburning fireplace. The bathroom and bedrooms are a bit confined. Nice little garden. The busy road in front of the cottage is no problem, except when exiting the driveway by car backwards.
