Souters, a small converted barn, is the main accommodation and suitable for couples but a third person could be accommodated if they wish to use the sofa bed. It has a large sitting room with a high vaulted ceiling, a well equipped open plan kitchen, separate double bedroom and a shower room with power shower. It is all on one level inside but has sloping paths and steps outside. Souters has underfloor heating throughout and also a stylish modern woodburner which makes for very cosy evenings in the colder months. Outside there are two terraces to be enjoyed during the summer and a large grassed area for play or relaxation. Fresh herbs can be found in the garden borders which guests are welcome to use. GRIBBLES is a LUXURY SHEPHERDS HUT situated in the garden of Souters which provides the second bedroom and can be rented in addition to Souters but not independently. PLEASE NOTE rental rates are set for 2 people renting Souters alone; please see our website www.soutersholidaycottage.co.uk or contact Nick and Cath directly for more realistic quotes for group bookings using Gribbles shepherds as well. Bookings and payment can then still be made online here.

Gribbles shepherds hut has a full sized double bed and also a single truckle bed beneath, which can be pulled out for sleeping. It is connected to the mains services, has LED lighting throughout, an en suite with a large shower tray and mains pressure water, WC, hand basin and heated towel rail. The shower room has underfloor heating and the rest of Gribbles has thermostatically controlled electric heating and with high levels of insulation, double glazed windows and doors is suitable for use all year round. There is a storage area for clothes and facilities to make hot drinks. Wooden steps lead up to the entrance. It has its own small terrace outside which is a perfect place for enjoying a summer breakfast. Gribbles is suitable for all ages and great fun for youngsters but not really suitable for unsupervised children under 12 years old.

About Nick and Cath Marno

Souters is found in the grounds of Valley Farm Cottage, home to Nick's family for nearly 100 years. The restoration of Souters was completed in 2012 with most of the work being done by Nick.. He also designed and built Gribbles shepherds hut which was completed in 2014. Both he and Cath enjoy continuing to develop features at the property. Nick works as a self employed heating engineer and is a keen country sportman who enjoys flying his hawk, rough shooting, working ferrets and fishing the river. Cath works for a local organic grower, enjoys growing fruit and vegetables for the home and is known for her baking and preserving. She has planted a herb bed at Souters for guests to use. Cath also enjoys walking the wealth of country footpaths with her dogs.

What makes this barn unique

Souters was a derelict stable building, surrounded by overgrown trees and brambles when we moved back here in 2005. We realised it wasn't possible to try to incorporate it into the lower farmyard which at the time we used for livestock including horses and cows, but that it could make a beautiful dwelling. Nick did much of the restoration himself. We have left many of the internal timbers exposed which give character to the building and there are some carpenters marks left on the beams inside. We love living at Valley Farm Cottage and particularly enjoy the peace and quiet and the wealth of wildlife apparent throughout the year. Gribbles shepherds hut was a further development which we felt would open the experience to bigger groups without impacting on the original charm. It is lovely to be able to share this with guests at Souters and we have met some very lovely people. Although within the grounds of our home it is far enough away to feel private and secluded but near enough that should any questions or problems arise they can be dealt with immediately.

Cosy and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We had a very comfortable stay at Souters, it's in a beautifully peaceful spot surrounded by trees and very close to many nice walks, cafes/restaurants and towns. We would most certainly come again for a break in the future!

Total relaxation

  • 5 of 5

Souters is set on the side of a valley amongst trees. It is so peaceful with the sights and sounds of nature all around. There is a private garden with furniture and a pizza oven! Nick & Cath have thought of everything to ensure that your stay is a home-from-home. There are lots of personal touches to make you feel welcome including fresh flowers, eggs, milk and a delicious cake! We liked the fact that there is a washing machine meaning you can travel light and don't bring home a suitcase of washing to do! Nick and Cath are on hand if you need anything, but once welcomed, leave you to enjoy your holiday. We loved it so much that we booked for next year as we left!

Outstanding Accomodation

  • 5 of 5

Myself and a friend stayed at Souters and Gribbles for a week in July. We were given a really warm welcome by Cath, who had also prepared an orange and chocolate marble cake for our arrival, which was delicious.

The barn is a very comfortable and well equipped accommodation and when coupled with Gribbles made ideal accommodation not only for us both but we were also able to invite a guest to stay on the sofa bed for a night in Souters.

This really is 5 star accommodation situated in a stunning setting. Perfect for the get away from it all relaxed break, but also surrounded by some wonderful sights and daytrips, of which Flatford Mill is a must.

Our thanks to both Cath and Nick for a memorable stay and we look forward to a return visit next year.

Countryside family and dog paradise

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful craftsmanship in both Gribbles Shepherds Hut and Souters Cottage, fabulous design meaning every need catered for. Picturesque and peaceful, relaxing and natural but with modern conveniences too should you require. Slept as a family of 4 in Gribbles, two adults and 11 year old in double bed and 14 yr old on the single truckle bed. Also slept as two in Gribbles and two in Souters some nights. Dogs loved off lead adventures and children loved freedom of safely exploring private woodlands.

Lovely property in a wonderful location. Very spacious converted barn with a large garden, surrounded by woodland. Hosts were very welcoming - cake and fresh flowers provided. Clean and well equipped, the property provided us with a perfect and private retreat. Hope to return.

Perfect hideaway

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at Souters having fun exploring the area on what has been a really hot weekend. The dogs enjoyed their walks, keeping cool in the river at Dedham and in the sea at Old Felixstowe. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and the Cottage is a lovely and relaxing haven to come back to. We loved watching the wildlife while we barbecued in the garden and made the most of the sun loungers for some shady relaxation when the temperatures rose. We hope to be back to try out the wood burner next time!

Cath and Nick are very hospital - their gift of homemade cake and fresh eggs was much appreciated.

The delightful village of Dedham is only 2 miles away and is well worth visiting. It is considered to be the very heart of Constable country, as well as home to Munnings Museum it has many beautiful buildings including a magnificent church. There is an art and craft centre and several excellent places to eat. Why not hire a boat and row down the Stour to Flatford, or take the bus boat and walk back through the river meadows. There is an extensive network of footpaths which take walkers through the fabulous Stour Valley and beyond.

Hadleigh is our nearest town with a complete range of shops and services. It is one of several towns made rich from the wool trade which is reflected in much of the architecture. Lavenham with its streets of timbered buildings is also within easy reach and is a lovely place to visit, as is Long Melford.

Other attractions easily accessible from Souters include:

Framlingham Castle - fantastic castle often has re-enactments and activities for all ages.

Colchester Zoo - world renowned for its breeding programme.

Museum of East Anglian Life - a fascinating day out.

Walton on the Naze - typical seaside town with pier and fish and chips.

Assington Mill - offers a wide range of courses, do check out their website.

Essex and Suffolk Gliding Club - Accredited as a Junior Gliding Centre

Sutton Hoo - Anglo-Saxon ship burial exhibition.

Beth Chatto Gardens

Alton Water - kayaking, dinghy sailing and windsurfing

Stonham Barns - bird of prey centre and shops.

There is a thriving performing arts scene from outdoor Shakespearean performances to rock and roll panto

The Wolsey Theatre Ipswich

Eastern Angles Theatre Group

Mercury Theatre Colchester

St Marys Art Centre Colchester

Common Ground Theatre Company

There is a rich seam of creative artisans including potters, artists, sculptors, furniture makers and woodworkers whose work can be found in some of the many galleries in the area.

And many more attractions far too numerous to list here.

Eating out is one of the pleasures of being on holiday and we are fortunate to be surrounded by many fine gastro pubs and restaurants. Several within walking or cycling distance.
