About John & Marjorie Davis

John & Marjorie are semi-retired parents & grandparents residing in England.

John is a Chartered Engineer with a career in major manufacturing companies followed by management consulting – specialising in directing major business performance improvement projects across the world for international Blue-Chip companies.

Marjorie is a professional ice dance skater. At only 10 she was the youngest ever to represent Great Britain at ice dancing, and at 16 became Professional British & World Ice Dance Champion. Later, in business she was MD of an Executive Recruitment Consultancy.

They first visited Barbados for 1 week in 1994, staying at Sam Lords' Castle resort in St Philip on the SE Coast. They loved Barbados and the local Bajans so much they returned the following year & were married on Sam Lord’s beach. They have visited more than 60 times since then and decided to invest in Idyllic Villa in 2001. They built a second villa ‘Beach Haven’ on the Caribbean West Coast in 2006

They are both very particular and very practical hands on people, and have built / refurbished the villas to a very high standard. Both villas are always kept by the housekeepers in an excellent, clean & well maintained condition. They fully manage the property maintenance and lettings themselves – visiting 3 or 4 times a year to keep everything ship shape – as well as having regular vacations there!

They have many strong friendship links with local residents, so they can introduce guests into the ‘behind the scenes’ Bajan local life if they wish to be more adventurous & involved.

John & Marjorie Davis purchased this villa in 2006

Why John & Marjorie Davis chose Prospect

Beach Haven is a freehold detached villa on the West Coast main road, directly fronting the beach of the Caribbean Sea at Prospect, near Fitts Village in the famous parish of St James. It was designed, built and fitted out by John & Marjorie & completed in 2006. It’s close to Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, but also its only a short drive further along the coast to all of the world famous resorts of the ‘Platinum Coast’ frequented by celebrities from all over the world – e.g. Sandy Lane Resort & golf course is only a 10 minute drive away.

The villa is creatively designed on 3 levels to make maximum use of its 2600 sq.ft floor area. On the first floor there are 3 double bedrooms all with full en-suite bathrooms. On the second floor there is a lounge/bar with patio doors opening onto a roof top sun patio overlooking the blue Caribbean – beautiful for relaxing day or night. It is fully furnished and equipped for a ‘home-from-home’ comfortable, self catering vacation with a housekeeping service included.

The villa is an ideal base away from the tourist resorts but close enough for visiting the beach bars & restaurants the area has to offer, and for exploring the whole island of Barbados.

Fantastic beach front house

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I had the luck of staying in John and Marjorie's house in Prospect, Barbados at the end of May. The location of the house is perfect, you can easily reach the best beaches, grocery store, and restaurants within a few minutes of driving. If you don't have a rental car, that's okay too, there is a bus stop right across the street.

The only downside of our stay was, that we only stayed for a week. Esther, the housekeeper, and Selma, the maid took perfect care of us. She is coming every other day to take care of the laundry and cleaning. We felt like in a hotel. There was a small hiccup when we arrived, but otherwise, everything was perfect.

We had no issues during our stay, everything was working. The house has everything you might need from the grill down to the toaster and blender.

The house is more than spacious and comfortable. Having breakfast on the first-floor terrace and dinner on the sundeck (grilled fish of course) were our daily activities.

The beach at the property has white sand and is calm for some any-time snorkeling.

As some previous reviewers wrote, there is a restaurant next door, but we have not really heard them. Whenever we saw them they were friendly and helpful. There is an open lot next to the house, the locals use it to get down to the beach during the weekend.

All together we are very happy that we were able to stay at the Beach Haven Villa and we appreciate John's help when we arrived (sorry for waking you up!). We would go back any day.

Fantastic value and idyllic location

  • 5 of 5

I loved our family holiday in this villa, and have stayed here 4 times in the last 5 years. Outstanding features include the private rooftop sun deck, the hot tub overlooking a private piece of prime Caribbean coast, swimming in the sea straight from the back of the house and the helpful maid service. As a frequent visitor to Barbados I have always found the locals friendly. However, they dislike rudeness and arrogance from wealthy tourists and I suspect the writer of the previous negative review gave them entirely the wrong impression. I know the owner of this villa John Davis very well. He is well liked by the local people and has always been courteous and helpful with any requests. I have always found the property immaculately maintained and can thoroughly recommend it

Overall great experience

  • 5 of 5

My experience at Beach Haven was a memorable experience with the local area being of a particularly positive experience.

As for the villa itself, I found the hospitality to be of a very high standard, exceeding expectations that I had before arrival. Having not been to the caribbean before, I found that this location gave a great insight to this part of the world and I will definitely be considering a return trip.

I would recommend this villa to anyone that wishes to see the island and hope that they are met with the same light that I was accustomed to throughout my trip.

location is great, house is not!

  • 1 of 5

The location was wonderful. Loved the little beach but due to so many rocks and waves, it's not suitable to swim from the beach. The house itself is very tired. Definitely more budget than luxury. It is beside an empty plot (lot) which is used by the staff of the next door restaurant as a staff car park/smoking area and pick up area, so it's extremely noisy late at night with loud music playing from their cars. We did complain to the owner of the restaurant on several occasions but to no avail. The house was rife with cockroaches which I absolutely hated. We couldn't open any windows for fear of attracting more bugs as there were no nets on the windows. The furniture is way past its sell by date, very tired and the beds need replacing. The bathroom cabinets are all broken and the floors tiles cracked. The outside patio furniture is a real miss match. Green table with black picnic folding chairs which are not meant for long term sitting so incredibly uncomfortable. The so called 'hot tub or 'cold tub could not be used as it was filthy with no steps to get into, it so wasn't used. We realised that the owner has a camera directed on the tub which he watched from home, I felt that was disgusting and a total invasion of ones privacy. Why would he want to sit and watch people in a tub! Not nice at all. There were no wine glasses when we arrived but the lady that looks after the place did buy us some. The cleaning girl Salma, was a joke, she spent the entire time on her mobile phone and when I asked her to be a little quieter, decided she was going to walk out! I was thrilled as I would rather have seen to the place myself as I felt her eating cakes in the utility room were adding to our cockroach problem. Sadly she returned and made our life a misery. When it rained we had water leaking on to our bed in the main bedroom. It was suggested we moved bedrooms. Only one bedroom had a view and that's why we rented it so we decided to stay in the room but separate the beds with a bucket in between. When the roofer came it was obvious this was an on going problem that had never been fixed. We then had a day of builders on the roof with dust everywhere. I have never cried so much on a holiday and wished I was at home. Would I rent this place again.....definitely not. If you want a budget, cockroach ridden house then this is the one for you! And you will be washed if you use the tub!! Beware!

Owner's Response: What a spiteful review. The complaint exaggerations are immense. Yes , items damaged or missing due to wear & tear by previous guests were replaced straight away eg wine glasses, portable CD player and sunbeds. Also, unfortunately, due to a massive storm a few days before they arrived rain water on the flat roof deck searched its way through a crack that had been sealed before and dripped into the bedroom. We had it repaired as soon as the water on the roof had dried up. The house is not cockroach or insect infested at all. The house is regularly treated outside for pest control & the maids provide a deterrent / killer aerosol to spray the rooms each day. It is no different to any other property in Barbados. Please don't consider visiting the Caribbean if you don't like hot weather, cannot use an aerosol insect spray, and are not capable of being respectful and grateful to very poor local people who are trying to bend over backwards for your benefit. Please stay at a top resort & pay their prices if you expect to be fawned over and want to make staffs lives a misery. I will ask other previous guests to submit reviews to give any future enquirers a fair idea of the villa - many are repeat guests who have stayed several times.

Beach Haven villa is located directly on the beach of the Caribbean sea - at Prospect, on the main West Coast road. It's about a quarter mile south of Fitts Village with its large beach & other facilities, and approx 150 yards from the famous Waves Hotel . About 400 yds south is Batts Rock, which is a quiet secluded bay with a beautiful beach where the catamarans sometimes moor up to show their passengers the beauty of the area. Our detached villa was built a few years ago on 3 storeys, in an elegant style. It has very distinctive imported windows with double glazed, tinted, toughened glass to keep the villa cool & provide maximum security. For further peace of mind It has security bars to all windows along with an internet based CCTV security recording system. A frequent bus service runs past - operating between Bridgetown & all of the West Coast villages through Prospect, Fitts Village, Paynes Bay, Sandy Lane, Holetown, Mullins and Speightstown up to Six Mens. The whole coast is known as the Platinun Coast - famous for its celebrity visitors, top class hotels, amenities, shopping restaurants and bars. However the villa is away from the crowds - a place to relax.
