Overview

About the property

4 bedroom sunny, one-storey house, amazing location, close to two sandy beaches

Murrawingi is located on a quiet private road in an area of outstanding natural beauty, The sunny, south-facing position offers spectacular views over Salcombe estuary, the Bar that marks the entrance to the harbour, and out into the English Channel beyond Prawle Point and Bolt Head

A gently curving 80ft balcony running the length of the south face of the house provides space for outdoor seating and eating, and is a great place for little children to play while their elders relax enjoying the view.

The 28ft sitting/dining room provides comfortable chairs and sofas, a large dining table with seating for 8, 26" TV and DVD player, an electronic keyboard, and open fireplace. Logs are provided. Double sliding doors open onto the south facing balcony.

There are 4 bedrooms. The main bedroom has a king-sized bed, armchair, desk, built-in wardrobe, and sliding doors opening onto the balcony. From each window there are lovely views of country, estuary and channel.

The second double bedroom has a 4'6" bed, built in wardrobe, and lovely channel and cliff views. One twin bedroom has two 3' beds, built-in wardrobe and sea views; the other has two 2'6" beds, hanging rail and a chest of drawers.

The bathroom has a luxurious, extra long bath. There is a separate shower room, two toilets (one in the shower room), a utility room with washing machine and tumble drier, and a large cloak/boot room for changing into and hanging outdoorclothing

The user-friendly newly fitted kitchen has a new ceramic hob and electric oven, new Miele dishwasher, microwave, fridge/freezer, plenty of worktop and cupboard space, table and chairs, and a lovely view to enjoy while preparing meals. The cupboards are fully equipped for at least 12 people, so you can invite your friends in for a meal.

The house is approached along a private road. Free parking is available in the road. There is parking for two or three cars next the house at the bottom of the steep drive. Murrawingi garden is about half an acre, steeply sloping towards the sea, filled with established woodland trees, hedges and shrubs. The top garden is stocked with herbs, vegetables and flowers.

Wifi and BT landline phone are provided.

There is so much to do and enjoy in the immediate surrounding area, you can forget the car and have a real holiday. The two sandy beaches within walking distance have rock pools, little streams, and safe swimming to delight children.

Launch or hire your boat or kayak from South Sands beach.

Walk the National Trust coastal trail or explore dozens of cliff and country tracks directly accessible from the house.

Book fishing, diving and sailing excursions at the beach or in the lively, fashionable town of Salcombe.

Visit the National Trust house and semi-tropical garden at Overbecks.

Play tennis or have a meal at The Winking Prawn cafe at North Sands Beach.

Try the icecream, or coffee and sandwiches at South Sands beach cafe, or eat in delicious luxury at the South Sands Hotel.

Or just sit on the balcony and enjoy the view and the peace and quiet. Occasionally from the balcony dolphins can be seen playing in the water.

Salcombe town is just 1 mile away, a quick drive or a beautiful walk. In the summer the Bag, the deep harbour within the estuary, is filled with yachts from all over Europe, sailing dinghies fill the scene with colour and the town has a real buzz.

Out of high season, there is plenty of activity, and more time to be still and enjoy the varied and wonderful beauty of the area.

Clothes and gift shopping in Salcombe is a pleasure, with boutiques, famous name shops, gift shops and a number of very interesting art galleries.

Groceries, vegetables freshly picked from local farms and all kinds of delicacies can be bought at Cranch's store; the Cranch family also run the next door old fashioned sweet shop. A long established butcher, several delicatessens and the local bakery selling bread, pasties and pastries made and baked on the premises, mean that all day to day shopping can be done without leaving Fore Street.

The market town of Kingsbridge, 4 miles away, has several supermarkets which will deliver, as well as many individual family firms, between them providing almost everything the holiday maker might need.

Cafes, restaurants and snack bars abound in Salcombe and the other South Hams villages. Friendly country pubs welcome children, provide good local ale and cider, and all day meals.

About Sue Chapman

Our family have holidayed in Salcombe, the most beautiful holiday place I know, since 1960. We have owned Murrawingi since 1974 - the house name means 'happy home'. It has indeed been a happy home for us and generations of visitors. Our children and grandchildren have enjoyed many years of holidaying here, with access to the sea, the cliffs and all the excitements and beauties that Salcombe offers. We all love the house, the town and the whole area, and I very much enjoy being able to let it to holiday visitors. We have been letting since the 1980's: many of our tenants have returned year after year, and are now returning with their own grandchildren.

Sue Chapman purchased this bungalow in 1974

Why Sue Chapman chose Salcombe

This is a comfortable, easy to live in house in a beautiful location that people of all ages will enjoy. There are no stairs, and as one guest wrote to me, her family found it 'perfect for four generations. The 16 month old enjoyed it as much as my 94 year old parents who were very happy to sit and look at the view when they didn't feel like going out.' Murrawingi is a great place for extended families, or for two families sharing.

What makes this bungalow unique

An easy-going, comfortable, one storey house with every convenience. Close to beaches, close to cliff and country walks, wonderful views of sea, fields, cliffs and sky that change as the light changes - one never tires of looking out, A Murrawingi holiday offers relaxation and enjoyment, a complete change from everyday working life.

Murrawingi's hideaway setting and panoramic ocean views offer a different perspective on England

  • 5 of 5

For knock-your-socks-off vistas, splendid coastal walks, and total peace and quiet, Murrawingi is the perfect choice. This comfortable and well-equipped family house stretches out over a wooded hillside overlooking the South Sands area of Salcombe. Town is about a 30-minute walk (or 10-minute ferry trip) in one direction, whilst nature in all its unadulterated glory lies a short walk the other way - think magnificent cliff walks and shady woods alive with wild garlic. The super-stylish South Sands hotel waits at the bottom of the hill if you want to dip into Salcombe's trendy vibe before returning to the unpretentious bolthole that is Murrawingi. We lit the fire on chilly evenings and dined out on the terrace when the sun was shining. Truly idyllic.

Outstanding View whatever the weather...

  • 4 of 5

I would say that the property is very clean and well kept, having said that its quite dated inside apart from the kitchen which has been updated. The DVD player is to old and does not play newer discs. Overall we had a very enjoyable stay and the view from the large balcony is fabulous:)

Lovely, family house in a great location!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the house for a week during half term. We were 2 families with 3 teenage children and the place had something for everyone. It is in a beautiful setting and Salcombe is approximately a 30 minute walk away. It's a bit of a hike on the way back and you need to be fit to tackle the hills, but the location is worth it. It's a perfect place for a peaceful break away.

Wonderful time with friends

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of 6 friends and stayed one week in Murrawingi just before Easter. The place is just marvellous. For walks you don't necessarily have to drive anywhere, you just step out of the house and explore. Nevertheless a car is convenient. The house is fantastic: We had breakfast on the balcony and used the fireplace in the evening. All bedrooms have wonderful views, exept one little room which looks on a wall. Of course the master bedroom is the nicest. The other bedrooms are rather small, but it's o.k. if you spend your time outside, on the balcony or the living room. You should speak about who gets which room beforehand... There are 2 bathrooms (no heating), which is convinient with many people.

It was nice to find some basics in the kitchen such as tea, sugar, some spices, oil etc. There is a big choice of dishes and pots, so you can cook yourself and don't have to spend a fortune in a restaurant. Just some suggestions to make the pleace even more perfect: a big GOOD pan would be wonderful to have; a shower curtain in the bathroom would be handy. And in the living room better lights (one over the table; may be a standard-lamp at the sofa?).

The contact with Sue, the owner was very easy and friendly! Thanks for having us in the house, Sue!

Location, location, location!!

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely week staying at Murrawingi, house was spacious for 4 adults and 3 kids, the view was spectacular, which was helped by great weather when we stayed there. Never been to this part of Devon before but would happily return to Murrawingi and Salcombe! Kids loved Ferry trip into Salcombe and the 30min walk back wasn't too bad either! The Fortescue Inn was a great place to eat, highly recommend it, great service and food.

Owner's Response: I am very glad you enjoyed being in Murrawingi and appreciated the great location and surroundings. Sorry about the toilet flush, this has now been fixed. If you had let the caretaker know at the time, they would have seen to this immediately
