The two bedroom apartment is located pool side in the prestigious beach frontline development of Porto Antigo 1. Porto Antigo 1 is one of the only complexes with immediate access to the sea whilst also enjoying the benefit of a good sized communal fresh water swimming pool and being only a 1 minute walk to the centre of Santa Maria.

The Apartment

The Apartment is equipped to cater for 4 adults and would also accommodate up to 2 further Children on a sofa bed. There is one double bedroom and one twin bedroom, both have wardrobes and bedside tables The kitchen has 4 ring hob cooking facilities, a large fridge with separate freezer compartment. General cutlery and cooking utensils are also provided. The separate bathroom has been equiped with a sink with cabinet, bidet, toilet & shower cubicle.

The Apartment enjoys excellent views across the horizon pool and to the open sea ahead of a private beach. The apartment is mobility friendly with ground floor access and just a few metres to the stepped access freshwater pool.

The development has a carefully maintained gardens and pool area with showers and decked sunbathing beds.

What makes this apartment unique

The resort of Santa Maria in Sal enjoys year round temperatures averaging between 24 & 30 degrees and averages 9 hours of sunshine per day with very little rain. Cape Verde is said to be the African Caribbean and has a flight time of only 5 to 6 hours from the UK with only 1 hours time difference. Cheap flights makes it affordable holiday destination. Sal enjoys a fairly constant breeze which keeps the humidity down and provides for excellent water sports including kite surfing, wind surfing and sailing. Additionally scuba diving is particularly good, game fishing, Whale watching, Glass bottom boats, Jet Skis, Quad biking is also available very close to the apartment. For people who like sea food it is possible to purchase fish directly from the fishermen at the pier where they will be pleased to prepare the fish for you. Also Italians have been visiting Cape Verde for many years and some have stayed and opened restaurants, therefore you can expect to enjoy excellent good quality food. In addition to this there is Indian, Chinese, local Cape Verdian, German, Tapas, English and Continental Cuisine.

Bars range from Cape Verdian, to Internet cafes to Stylish music bars to Night Clubs, Beach BBQs/parties & entertainment evenings therefore there is something for everyone. Particular favourites of the owners are Josh Angulos and Tam Tam where the atmosphere and people are lively friendly and relaxing.

The beaches in Santa Maria are fabulous and vary greatly. All have fine white / golden sand and crystal clear warm water.

A challenging stay

Without doubt this property has wonderful views, and this is its key selling point, but unfortunately I am not sure this is enough to make this a recommended accommodation. We faced a number of challenges during our stay, with the most difficult being broken air conditioning from day 1 of the holiday, for 2 weeks. In temperatures of 35 degrees, and with only 1 fan on a 2hr timer, this made much of our stay uncomfortable. During this time we had frequent contact with the owner who at times came across as passive, until we complained about the conditions, in which efforts were made to try and resolve it. Unfortunately this took up much time, including us waiting in for maintenance teams, and helped us to rack up a 90.00 phone bill! Quite quickly we realised this was not going to be resolved during our stay and made the best of our remaining time.

Our arrival was also tainted, with no planned taxi to meet us at the airport as agreed with the owner, and noone with any awareness that we were coming to stay! Thankfully we were able to access the property via an external key lock, as the host meeting us was on holiday when we arrived. This meant us having to set up our own garden furniture and not being greeted with a prepared accommodation. Although we had clean bed linen which was something.

We have contacted the owner upon our arrival home to discuss reimbursement for the lack of air conditioning and continue to get no response to our most recent email and text. To summarise, whilst the reviews for this accommodation have been very good, our experience unfortunately was very different, and the owner, whilst responsive initially, was not helpful in actioning anything to help make our stay more comfortable. The accommodation itself requires work, and we noticed a few apartments while we were in Porto Antigo which appeared much more worthy of a 5 star rating.

Owner's Response: I am disappointed to learn of Lewis's partial dissatisfaction. The air conditioning was working on Lewis's arrival, and once Lewis let me know it required maintenance, I immediately arranged for both a specialist air-conditioning engineer and also the apartment technician. Both inspection visits were initially frustrated by no one being at the apartment to meet them Eventually after the technicians visited and reported that it would require replacement, which I had arranged and also asked for a temporary portable air con unit. Unfortunately, there was not a portable air con unit to be located on the island. Also there was to be a time delay for a replacement because of supplies in stock. It was at Lewis's request, that I did not pursue this further, (as he said he just wanted to get on with the rest of his holiday). Lewis, after his stay, demanded compensation. I offered him discount for his next stay, which he declined. I have been to the apartment over the last two weeks and arranged for new air conditioning units to be installed to the lounge and main bedroom. There are existing wall mounted fans in the second bedroom and bathroom. There is also had a newly fitted kitchen which was arranged last week., (see updated photos), along with an extended patio area to the front aspect and also a small ramp which now makes the apartment wheelchair accessible. Lewis and his partner are more than welcome to return to stay at the apartment at a discount previously offered.

Stunning location for lovely apartment

This was our first visit to Sal and after 2 weeks exploring Santa Maria we could not have stayed in a better location. Poolside but with the ability to retreat into the shade or find some sun somewhere on the apartment's own terrace, thanks to it being to the both the front and one side. Just across to the left past the pool is a pleasant bar/restaurant for a drink or something more, and although we did not partake we saw a steady stream of takers for the breakfast heading that way each morning. Other bar and restaurant choices are just a few minutes walk away, with everything from eating like the locals to more international themed options.

The apartment is well equipped, clean and spacious, although with the weather so good we spent most of our time outdoors. Thoroughly recommend the taxi option from the airport which made arrival so easy after our flight from UK. Linda was on hand to greet us, gave us a very warm welcome and showed us around, as well as providing the low down on Santa Maria and dealing with any queries we had throughout our stay. Declan and Lesley also happened to be on the island during our stay and were most helpful and charming, as they had been during the booking and pre-visit communications.

If you intend to head for the beach it is probably a good idea to take your own beach towels. Mini-supermarkets are plentiful and the nearest no more than 50 metres away. You may have to visit more than one if you need something in particular but for us this merely added to the experience of visiting what is after all an island a long way even from the coast of Senegal.

Just the best place to unwind and we definitely intend to return. Thanks to you all for making our stay so enjoyable.

Really nice apartment right by the pool.

We had a wonderful and relaxed vacation in this lovely apartment right by the pool and only few meters from the water. Clearly one of the best apartments in the complex.
