Comfortable 4 bed 2 bath Savoyard Farmhouse close to major ski resorts,sleeps 10

Our charming Savoyard Farmhouse nestles in a beautiful, quiet hamlet in the Vallée d'Abondance within its own pasture-style garden with mature trees and with a fabulous mountain backdrop and breathtaking views all year round. The immediate area around it is peaceful and tranquil, yet it lies only 10 minutes drive from Abondance where the magnificent Portes du Soleil ski area begins. It is semi-detached but split along the roof ridge line so the other side of the chalet is completely separated giving complete isolation and privacy, each side having their own driveway access from the main road with no shared facilities whatsoever. Because it is an old farmhouse, the walls are very thick and provide great insulation from noise and inclement weather. The farmhouse is set in a beautiful and picturesque valley landscape which can be appreciated both in winter and summer. The house is roomy and will comfortably house a large family or a group of friends.

Built originally in 1842, the farmhouse/chalet has been sympathetically renovated in the traditional woodclad Alpine style to a high standard providing warm and comfortable, family-style living accommodation over two floors. From the house and garden, there are stunning views over the steep snow and pine clad alpine mountains around it and also down the gentle slopes of the valley towards Vacheresse, our local village, and the adjoining valley, giving that picture-postcard feel.

The ground floor area has a large fully fitted, convivial kitchen/diner for family/group eating with ample seating for 10 persons around a large wooden table. The kitchen is fully equipped with all mod cons and stocked with everything you need for cooking and dining - an electric range cooker and oven, a microwave, fridge/freezer, a wine chiller and a double sink. There is a large pine dresser and plenty of plates, saucepans, utensils and cutlery. Leading off the kitchen is a sun terrace with table and chairs for the all important evening 'apéro' and summer wining and dining with lovely, sweeping views over the meadow garden, the valley and the surrounding mountains.

Next to the kitchen is a spacious and comfortably furnished, family-style living room with two comfy double sofas and other easy chairs with the added warmth of a wood burning stove for cosy evenings in the winter giving it a homely feel where you can completely relax and unwind after a hard day's exercise. There is a large, flat screen television and plenty of DVD's, board games and books to keep you entertained in the long winter evenings. Double windows create a light and airy space during the day.

Across the hallway is a separate toilet and a modern bathroom with bath and two basins. Next to the bathroom is a 'boot room' cum storeroom for storing your essential ski equipment, cases, etc. so this can all be neatly tucked away at the end of the day.

Stairs from the kitchen lead upstairs where there are four comfortably furnished double bedrooms, two with French door access to a sun terrace and the balcony which extends along the front of the house. Two bedrooms contain double beds, one has twin beds and one as two sets of bunk beds so there is ample sleeping space for 10 people. There is also a put-up bed in one of the double bedrooms suitable for a child. There are storage facilities for clothes, etc. in every bedroom. Two bedrooms each sit either side of a spacious landing where there is a shower room with toilet facilities. There are beautiful views of the mountains and valley from all four bedrooms. There is a large landing with a sofa for extra relaxation space.

The house has electric heating throughout which is included in the overall price. There are pictures on the walls and rugs and ornaments throughout, giving the house a homely and easy feel.

The property has its own private driveway from the access road to the main road and is fronted by a large pasture type garden and mature trees. It is quiet, peaceful and safe for children to play, although the village of Vacheresse with all its facilities is only 2 minutes drive away or a 20 minute walk. There is also a ping-pong table and table football for tenants' use.

Please note that the cellar/basement area is not for tenants' use.

Here at our farmhouse you can have the best of both worlds - lively 'buzz' in the major resorts if you feel like it just down the road , but peace and quiet in tranquil surroundings if you don't and a perfect retreat to get away from it all.

Hi there. We are Mike and Tania and would be delighted to welcome you to our lovely Savoyard farmhouse/chalet. We live in Berkshire and have three grown up sons and family and friends who enjoy the skiing, winter and summer sports and all the amenities that our chalet and its surrounds in the Vallée D'Abondance and beyond has to offer. We both work full time - I have a building company and my wife, Tania, also works so we lead busy lives and really appreciate the fun and relaxation that going to the Haute Savoie offers us, both in winter and in the summer.

Why Mike Hemley chose Vacheresse

We originally bought the farmhouse in that particular Alpine area as we are avid skiiers, mountain-lovers and Francophiles and we love the ski facilities available in this lovely area which are second to none, but we also love the added attraction of the fantastic warm summers, beautiful springs and colourful autumns so it is wonderful to visit all year round which is a real bonus. The climate is truly magnificent with the stunning winter snow and sun, brilliant for skiing, and the lovely summer weather, ideal for hiking and biking and sunbathing too, of course. The house appealed to us as it has that unique alpine traditional feel being a 'family' house, roomy and spacious. We lead very busy, 'full-on' lives so we appreciate the peace and quiet we find there, being slightly removed from the crowds, but having all the social life we want just up the road. There's nothing nicer than after a hard day's exercise and fun, to return to our comfy house and unwind with a nice, relaxing drink with our family and friends - I thoroughly recommend it so come and try it out. I think you will enjoy our comfortable house - we've made it home so we hope you will feel 'at home' there.

What makes this farmhouse unique

We fell in love with this particular chalet as it has so much character and history but with an appealing 'family' feel. We were taken with the stunning mountain and valley views around the property - in the winter the snow-capped high mountain peaks are majestic and the snow blanket covering the whole area is magical and gives that winter wonderland effect. But the summers are just as beautiful with the wonderful green pastures on the slopes , fantastic for walking and biking. We were first drawn to this area because of the fabulous ski resorts in the Portes du Soleil area which offer you superb winter skiing and sporting facilities but we have come to love it there in the other seasons as the climate is so healthy with very warm summers and the changing seasons so you have the best of all worlds. We love going to Lake Geneva in the summer too with all that it has to offer and which is just up the road - a mere 20 minutes' drive away. The water sports and boating facilities are great and you can easily hire the equipment so it is easy to take advantage of them. There are also restaurants, shops and boutiques for all tastes and amenities to suit anybody and everybody. As we've said before, there's something for everyone here so we hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.

Abondance

Our chalet lies in the Vallée d'Abondance. 20 minutes walk/2 mins drive from the chalet is our local village of Vacheresse ,a pretty and peaceful Alpine village with a mix of modern and traditional Savoyard-style buildings. Although the village is fairly quiet, there are restaurants in the 3 local hotels offering meals of a good standard and a café-bar which sells the essential early morning croissants and fresh baguettes, and a few shops. Unusually for such a little village is the existence of a paragliding school. Vacheresse is part of the commune of Abondance and between the six towns and villages that make up the commune, there are shops, ski and sports equipment hire locations, health care services and schools and a strong local community spirit. Around Vacheresse, on the well marked walking trails, you can find various monuments such as the Vierge de Vacheresse and a fresh water fountain. In the local fromageries you can try out the local AOC branded Abondance cheese, a semi-hard, fragrant, raw-milk cheese made from the local cows' milk. The area is a traditional farming community which now boasts famous, world-class ski resorts which have grown in popularity and celebrity over the years.

The area around Vacheresse is a paradise for the outdoor sports lover thanks to its proximity to the fabulous ski resorts in the Portes du Soleil region, Lake Geneva (just 7km from the chalet) for summer water sports,the swift waters of the River Dranse running through the valley for kayaking and white water rafting plus endless walking and hiking, mountain and downhill biking facilities in the miles of beautiful slopes in the Abondance valley.

Abondance, 10 minutes drive from the chalet, is the gateway to the ski facilities. It is a typical picturesque alpine village and lies in the heart of the traditional farming Haute-Savoie valley from which it takes its name. The lofty peaks of the 'Cornettes de Bise' and the 'Mont de Grange' rise spectacularly to almost 8000 ft around it. A charming but proper working village, it is situated at the entrance to the Portes du Soleil's winter playground on this French-Swiss border region. The Portes de Soleil domain is the largest international linked ski area in the world with over 650 km of varied terrain spread across 8 French and 4 Swiss resorts, offering endless choice of runs. Abondance houses several bars, hotels, restaurants, a bank, some food and ski/outdoor shops and a lively Sunday morning market which serves the whole of the Vallée d'Abondance One of its historic features is the 14th century Abbey. L'Essert is the name of the town's ski area and it has 7 lifts and 13 runs of which are are two nursery slopes, 6 blue runs, 3 red and 2 black and a mountain restaurant. Ecole de Ski Français operates in Abondance. In addition to downhill skiiing, the resort has 10 km of cross country ski and snow shoe trails. In summer Abondance offers fabulous walking and hiking facilities, downhill and mountain biking and lots more for the outdoor enthusiast. La Chapelle d'Abondance, a small village near to Abondance, offers further ski lifts and ski facilities and amenities.

About half an hour's drive from the chalet lies Châtel which is another popular, major ski resort and has an extensive ski area with runs to suit skiers and boarders of all abilities. The village is served by a free ski-bus which gives easy access to ski lifts. Châtel is also a very popular mountain bike resort with ski lifts opening between June and September for cyclists. More activities also include the 'Fantasticable' - a zip-line extending between two mountain peaks spanning the valley of Pre-la-Joux. It is only active during the summer season. Châtel is packed with cafés, bars and restaurants for a welcome 'vin chaud' or hot chocolate and a lively après-ski atmosphere.

Only 20 mins drive from the chalet lies Lake Geneva which is famous for its summer water sport facilities - sailing, swimming, diving, water-skiing, boating, paragliding, etc. There are stylish restauants and boutiques along its shores so it's nice to go there for a wander and to have a lovely long lunch outdoors in the summer sun.

There are fêtes to celebrate in the summer months which you can find out about at the local tourist offices or mairies,and a wealth of restaurants and après-ski fun in the towns in the valley such as La Chapelle-d'Abondance, Abondance, Châtel, Evians-les-Bains, Morzine, Avoriaz and the spa towns of Evian-les-Bains and Thonon-les-Bains, (where there are casinos if that's your bag - the French adore their casinos) and the Swiss town of Morgins.

But for those wanting to unwind in peace and relaxation, you can lose yourself in the tranquility and solitude of these ancient mountains amongst the Alpine Peaks of the Chablais Massif surrounding the Abondance Valley where wild life and wild flowers abound on its rich, green pastures

Great family chalet

Perfect for two families (4 adults, 4 older teenage kids) sharing a weeks skiing in Feb. Location is great for those that like a quiet situation. Not for those that what restaurants/bars on the doorstep! Short drive to wide ski area, just what we like - drive to the lifts, loads of parking, not so much walking with skis! 4 good sized bedrooms, kitchen diner with seats for all, lovely large bathroom & upstairs shower room plus drying room. Lounge had cosy seating for all with large wood burner which kept house warm. Would love to return in the summer as well as back for more skiing.

Familie-weekend in de sneeuw feb 2017

We zijn net terug van een fantastisch familieweekend met 7 volwassenen. Belanrijk was voor ons dat we niet een volle week hoefden te huren, de hele dag kunnen skien en voor vermaak niet volledig afhankelijk zijn van locale horeca.. Het huis ligt midden in het gebied van waaruit je gemakkelijk naar o.a. Morzine of Chatel kan rijden (ca 30 min). Het is een fantastisch skigebied, vooral blauwe en rode pistes maar ook zwart zoals "the Wall" op de grens tussen Frankrijk (vanuit Avoriaz) en Zwitserland. Je kan ski-tours (dagtochten) maken maar meer locaal kan je je heel ook goed vermaken. Nauwelijks wachttijden bij de skiliften, zeker wat verder af van de dorpskernen. Het huis heeft ruime parkeergelegenheid, een fantastische benedenverdieping, grote badkamer, grote/ruime gecombineerde eetkamer/keuken en een volwaardige luxueuze woonkamer met houtkachel. De bovenverdieping heeft 4 kamers met goede bedden/linnengoed, op de overloop is nog een 2-persoonsbedbank beschikbaar en een kleinere gecombineerde douche/toiletruimte. Voor warmwater wordt beschikt over een grote boiler. Zeker voor grotere groepen, tot 12, is het wel handig afspraken te maken over het gebruik van de 2 douches/warmwater; goed voor het groepsgevoel :-).

Wij vonden het huis fantastisch en maken er graag nogmaals gebruik van.
