Ten¬erife enjoys near-guaranteed heat which makes it a popular year-round holiday destination. The temperatures on Tenerife remain high all year round. Even in January, temperatures average 18C. August tends to be the hottest month with temperatures averaging 26C.

For entertainment Tenerife is a favourite holiday destination for many as it is possible to visit for a week or two of complete relaxation in the sun, flopping on the beach and drinking in the lively bars.

However, the island also appeals to those after a more energetic holiday as it has several golf courses, great diving opportunities and a range of watersports.

The southern resort of Playa de las Americas is the place to head for a fun-filled break as bars and restaurants line the beaches serving everything from full-English breakfasts to tapas. While the days here are all about topping up your tan, the nights are the time to let your hair down and to drink until dawn.

Just down the coast, Los Cristianos is a good option for a slightly quieter beach break, but one that still offers plenty of choice when it comes to eating and drinking. The imported golden sand, pedestrian promenades and sheltered bay makes the former fishing town a popular option for families. Plus, children will love the nearby “water kingdom”, Siam Park, with a handy free bus service on offer from the resort.

Puerto de la Cruz in the north of the island was a popular destination for tourists as early as the 19th century, and is still a hot spot today. Visitors can relax on black sand beaches or in the Costa Martianez Complex - a lido with a range of bars, restaurants and a nightclub - or take a trip to Loro Parque to see animals including parrots, tigers and gorillas.

Other options for holidaymakers include the quiet northern village Garachico - a world away from the busier south of the island - with naturally-formed pools created following volcanic eruptions; and Costa Adeje just up the coast from the lively destinations of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas that offers a quieter base.

More adventurous travellers can also visit Teide National Park to see the volcanic landscape and the highest point in Spain.

There's always something going on in fun-filled Tenerife from family parades to food and music festivals. Here's our pick of some of the best annual events.

Canary Islands Music Festival; January-February; various venues - This classical music festival has been running since 1985 and aims to increase visitor numbers to the islands while showing that there is more to the Canary Islands than just sun, sea and sand.

Tenerife Carnaval; February; Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz hold the biggest celebrations.

Noche de San Juan; June; the biggest celebration is in Puerto de la Cruz - on Midsummer's Eve, more than 20,000 people go to Puerto de la Cruz's largest beach with picnics and flowers. Bonfires are lit, fireworks are set off, bands play and, at midnight, people go into the sea to reap the benefits of the magical Midsummer waters (they are believed to bring good health for the year ahead).

Tenerife really has something for everyone whether it's a family holiday, romantic getaway or a trip with friends.

Best of Tenerife holidays for...

• Nightlife: Looking for a wild night out? Head to Playa de las Americas for slam shots, foam parties and karaoke bars. Dance until dawn in the banging club districts of Starco and The Patch and along neon-lit Veronicas strip.

• Babies & toddlers: Take the tots to the broad, sandy bay of Los Cristianos and cool off under the volcano-like fountain. The beachfront playgrounds and palm-lined pedestrian promenades make it perfect for small kids.

• Grown-up families: Ever wanted to spot a whale? Sail away from the towering cliffs of Los Gigantes and out to sea aboard a glass-bottomed boat or catamaran. Keep your eyes peeled for frolicking bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales.

• Kids & teens: Kids love the thrills and spills of Asian water kingdom Siam Park. Zip down flumes through the jungle, ride rapids past Thai temples and surf enormous artificial waves at the Wave Palace.

• Romance: Feel your heart skip a beat on the winding road to Masca. This cliff hanger of a village is perched amid massive mountains, rocky pinnacles and lush terraces. Share the dreamy views and tasty local cactus ice cream.

• Active types: Hike through a multicoloured moonscape of wind-eroded rocks and craters in the Teide National Park. Feeling energetic? Clamber up to Mount Teide, Spain's highest peak at 3718m, for clouds-speckled views of the island.

• Relaxing: Keep your cool in Puerto de la Cruz' botanical gardens on holidays to Tenerife. This wonderland of exotic plants in the Orotova Valley bristles with spiky dragon trees, flame-like bird of paradise flowers and giant figs with strangler roots.

Whatever you decide to do return at the end of the day return to the "normally"! cooler quiet Vilaflor and switch off.

Why Mr Michael E Harwood chose Vilaflor

The property was a former Restaurant converted back to residential use. I have used Tenerife due its varied ecology “Sub-tropical desert” it’s called, technically, but the land of “eternal spring” is just about perfect with its wonderful climate, lifestyle and beauty. The “blessed isles”.

Lying at 1500 metres above sea level on Tenerife, Vilaflor boasts the title of Spain’s highest municipality. Pine forests surround the town, creating the sort of landscape where you expect to hear the tinkle of goat bells and where nuns are apt to break into a chorus of “The Hills are Alive”. Vilaflor’s landscape is also sculpted into surreal platforms of creamy, jable-covered terraces that tap moisture from the clouds providing irrigation for potatoes and vines; the town’s trademark produce.

Popular legend has it that Vilaflor owes its name to a Spanish Captain of the conquistadores; Pedro de Bracamonte who upon seeing a beautiful Guanche girl in the forest above the town exclaimed “¡Vi la flor de Chasna!” – I have seen the flower of Chasna (the town’s former name).

Vilaflor is a beautiful base for exploring the hills of the south, Mount Teide and Las Cañadas del Teide. A must for anyone staying here is to head into the forest in search of the weird and wonderful Paisajes Lunar.

Once a popular destination for scientists and explorers who travelled the Camino de Chasna from La Orotava, Vilaflor was the location of the first hotel in the south of Tenerife. Ironically these days most visitors to Tenerife pass it by in on their way to Mount Teide and in doing so, overlook a historic little town with flower lined streets and a friendly personality.
