About Gill Simpson

Although we now live in Lincolnshire, working in the National Health Service, both myself and my husband were born in Manchester and have a close link with the Yorkshire Dales, having spent many happy holidays there.

Gill Simpson purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Gill Simpson chose Hawes

We fell in love with the House on the Hill on first sight, being such a characterful property and so ideally located in the heart of Hawes, the most special town in the Yorkshire Dales. The open access to the high hills and rolling valleys is unparalleled!

What makes this cottage unique

Location is everything - the Pennine Way passes the door and the splendid pubs of Hawes are only a few steps away. We have striven to make The House on the Hill homely and comfortable - including Farrow and Ball paints and Voyage fabrics .

Guestbook comments from the owner

We are happy that your cottage is lovely, warm and cosy as we spent a lot of time in it because of the rain!! We particularly liked the cyclists on the wall! We had a great time. Thank you very much!

Wonderful cottage in an ideal location in the heart of Hawes.

Had a lovely weekend in the cottage. It was perfect. It had everything we needed.

It is beautifully presented and felt very cosy after walking in the fresh winter weather. Perfect location right on the heart of Hawes & close to the pub.

A wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

We were so impressed with this comfortable, spotlessly clean and well appointed cottage.

It is one of the very best we have ever stayed in and we are quite particular. We managed 4 days of walking, without a car which is perfectly possible. We were collected and dropped off at the local train station by the 'Little White Bus' which can be booked to meet your train. The cottage was ideally placed in this respect as you can saunter down to the local shops, pick up your paper and have a coffee or use on of the friendly pubs. Despite being in the town the cottage was wonderfully quiet at night and the neighbours were amazingly welcoming considering we were new faces passing through.

The owners seem to have thought of everything for the comfort of their guests and we were hugely appreciative.

We would not hesitate to recommend a stay here and we look forward to visiting again.

Perfect little cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a brilliant long weekend at House on the Hill. It is a beautiful, modern and clean cottage with everything you need. There isn’t always parking directly outside but plenty of on street parking 30second walk away.

The owner was incredibly helpful and even sorted the safe return of my sons toy which we left.

We will definitely be booking again to stay at this wonderful cottage.

Lovely property and beautifully restored

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in the House on the Hill. Home from home and absolutely everything you could possibly need. Very comfortable and we enjoyed driving round the dales and the excellent scenery. As we are in our seventies we did not go hiking but got plenty of excersise and fresh air. We were very lucky as the weather was very good. Would certainly recommend this property.

Lovely cottage with everything we needed. We liked the lovely sunny kitchen.

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed the lovely cottage. The kitchen was nice and sunny and very cosy. We were very lucky to find a car parking space opposite the cottage so didn't move the car all weekend.

Wensleydale is in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and there are ample walking and hiking opportunities in the area, with the Pennine Way running through the village. The town of Hawes houses the Yorkshire Dales Countryside Museum and the famous ropemakers, as well as galleries displaying the works of local artists. There are ample opportunities to sample local food and ales at the many pubs within and around the town. The home of Wensleydale cheese, Hawes houses the creamery with a large visitor centre and restaurant. Hawes and the surrounding villages provide spectacular scenery, notably the waterfalls at Hardraw and Aysgarth, and the village of Askrigg, of James Herriot fame, is a short drive away. A little further afield is the market town of Leyburn, and the town of Middleham, known for it's racing stables and castle.
