About Gill Simpson

Although we now live in Lincolnshire, working in the National Health Service, both myself and my husband were born in Manchester and have a close link with the Yorkshire Dales, having spent many happy holidays there.

Gill Simpson purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Gill Simpson chose Hawes

We fell in love with the House on the Hill on first sight, being such a characterful property and so ideally located in the heart of Hawes, the most special town in the Yorkshire Dales. The open access to the high hills and rolling valleys is unparalleled!

What makes this cottage unique

Location is everything - the Pennine Way passes the door and the splendid pubs of Hawes are only a few steps away. We have striven to make The House on the Hill homely and comfortable - including Farrow and Ball paints and Voyage fabrics .

Guestbook comments from the owner

We are happy that your cottage is lovely, warm and cosy as we spent a lot of time in it because of the rain!! We particularly liked the cyclists on the wall! We had a great time. Thank you very much!

Lovely cottage!

  • 5 of 5

Lovely cottage, beautifully decorated with all the comforts of home provided for. A really great spot, quiet and relaxing and a very short walk to the amenities of Hawes. Especially recommend the White Hart for great food and service.

Excellent holiday cottage

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for a wonderful holiday. The property has been updated very well and the decor/facilities are fantastic. The position in the village allows easy access to all amenities and we enjoyed eating regularly at The Crown and the creamery. Had a lovely time at the local gala and found some excellent local walks. We look forward to returning in the near future.

Excellent, we will come again

  • 5 of 5

This is a superior property. Large, very comfortable, beautiful furnishings, furniture, linens, dishes etc and very, very clean. We couldn't have been happier there. The location is terrific as well, with four pubs within a couple of hundred of yards two of which serve excellent food while all have a great atmosphere. There are two excellent stores where you can buy everything you need and a great bakery and butcher shop a stone's throw away. We didn't have a car yet with the dozens of footpath choices starting in Hawes and a bus link to neighboring villages we got all the hiking we wanted and enjoyed spectacular scenery. This house in Hawes is worth the trip. Go, you won't regret it.

Fantastic cottage

  • 5 of 5

Everything you could possibly need and beautifully decorated throughout. Extremely comfortable and clean. We had a brilliant time and the weather was perfect. Only problem was parking but bought a weekly ticket for National Park Car Park so solved that one.

very nice cottage

  • 4 of 5

Not keen on strong spice smell in kitchen but apart from that, very nice accommodation. Location very good indeed. Everything on ground floor looked brand new. Upper floor bedrooms and bathroons not renovated quite as well as the ground floor. Flooring was not great in the hall but allowing for the fact that we are very particular and picky, I would have to rate the cottage overall as excellent and we have no complaints at all. Would recommend to anyone. Bottle of wine left is a nice gesture/greeting too.

Car: recommended

Wensleydale is in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and there are ample walking and hiking opportunities in the area, with the Pennine Way running through the village. The town of Hawes houses the Yorkshire Dales Countryside Museum and the famous ropemakers, as well as galleries displaying the works of local artists. There are ample opportunities to sample local food and ales at the many pubs within and around the town. The home of Wensleydale cheese, Hawes houses the creamery with a large visitor centre and restaurant. Hawes and the surrounding villages provide spectacular scenery, notably the waterfalls at Hardraw and Aysgarth, and the village of Askrigg, of James Herriot fame, is a short drive away. A little further afield is the market town of Leyburn, and the town of Middleham, known for it's racing stables and castle.
