Overview

About the property

A one bedroom gite with pool in rural setting but close to amenities.

Not far from the famous NW Dordogne town of Brantome, is the small village of St. Just, and here a quiet lane leads to the 5 houses which form the hamlet of 'La Roche Chabrelle'. (or 'Chabrelle')

Our home, 'Chez Hodgkiss', is the last building before the lane becomes a track. This quiet hamlet is in an elevated position overlooking woods and farmland, with gentle walks all around.

Chez Hodgkiss' our home, comprises of an old farmhouse and a barn all set in approx 2 acres of land.

The barn has been lovingly converted into two gites, (one called 'The Barn' [property ref.1939230], with two bedrooms, and the other called 'The Stables' [property ref.1939228], with one bedroom.)

Please note that to provide privacy and peace for our guests we only rent out one of the gites at a time, unless a party wishes to rent both together.

Each gites has a wealth of exposed stone walls, oak or tiled floors, and rustic beams. Decoration and furnishings have been chosen to provide comfort and convenience for your holiday.

A pool and sun terrace are situated away from the buildings and gives lovely views across the valley.

The post van is the total passing traffic, however we are not remote, being within easy reach of La Tour Blanche, Riberac, and Brantome with nearby shops and restaurants.

Here is a place for relaxing and enjoying your home away from home, and as a base for exploring the surrounding area, either by foot, bike or car.

'The Stables' are all on one level without steps, to give ease of access and usage.

Entry is from the courtyard, where a morning coffee can be enjoyed in the shade of the walnut tree.

The entrance hall gives access to a good sized bedroom with king-size bed, bedside cabinets, a wardrobe, a set of drawers and a dressing table.

Also off the hall is the bath room with a walk-in shower area, W.C. and basin; the washing machine is located in a recess within the bathroom.

At the rear, overlooking the garden and pool, is the lounge, dining and kitchen, with French doors onto the terrace. Here in the shade of the fig tree is a delightful place to relax and enjoy a glass of wine and an evening meal, whilst watching the sun go down behind the trees.

About Trevor Hodgkiss

We bought this empty farmhouse and attached barn in 2004 and spent our holidays to convert a part of the barn into a small gite.

We left England and moved into the gite in 2010, and have subsequently completely renovated the whole property to give us a delightful home and two generous sized gites.

We now enjoy our new life in this most beautiful setting, and love welcoming guests to share the enjoyment too.

Trevor Hodgkiss purchased this barn in 2004

Why Trevor Hodgkiss chose Saint-Just

The property had stood empty for 50 years when we first saw it, however it's setting and surroundings just cried out to be enjoyed.

The house was an old farm built in 1836 and stands at the end of a small road at the head of a small outcrop of limestone with four other houses forming the hamlet of Chabrelle. All around are trees and it overlooks the fields of maize or sunflowers down in the valley.

There are lovely walks either along the lanes or through the woods, and the wildlife is fascinating.

We are just a kilometre out of the village of St Just and 6 kilometres from the little town of La Tour Blanche with it's local shops. For more serious shopping Brantome or Riberac are a short drive away.

What makes this barn unique

Our property is in a very quiet and peaceful area, great for winding down and relaxing; however there is lots to see and enjoy locally.

To ensure your peace and privacy we only rent out one Gite at a time. (Unless you require both together as one party.)

We have 2 bikes for our guests, and can arrange bike hire for the more serious riders.

We have some maps for walks locally and can recommend places for you to visit.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We stayed in the Stables in the summer of 2011 and we loved it.We got a very warm welcome from Chris & Trevor who live next door and help immediately when you need anything. It is a great place for sightseeing the Dordogne, but also for walks in the woods or staying there reading and relaxing. It is a lovely, very comfortable and cosy gite, well situated and ideal for a couple.

Barbara and Oswald, Berlin.

Back from a lovely 10 days, staying in the new 2 bedroom Gite. Very stylish, spacious and extremely comfortable. Was very accommodating for our two young children. Would highly recommend to anyone with a young family, as very relaxing. Must say the swimming pool was a bonus too! Well done Trevor on your hard work to get the Gite ready for our stay. BIG thank you to both Chris and Trevor for a wonderful holiday. See you next year.

Shameem and Daniel, St Abans.

This place is a diamond, a gem, a thing of real beauty

  • 5 of 5

It's really hard to express what a wonderful place the owners have here.

It's something you want everyone to see but at the same time keep it a closely guarded secret

Wonderful people, a standard far superior to many other places I've stayed and real real value for money

Thoroughly enjoyed it and will certainly return here

Fantastic Gite

  • 5 of 5

The Stable is exactly as described on the website. The cottage is bright, modern, tastefully furnished, has a great swimming pool and is in a peaceful, idyllic rural location. It is spotlessly clean and fresh and everything you could foreseeably need is provided. The owners Trevor and Christine take a real pride in their properties and their top priority is to ensure each person has a great holiday. I'd recommend this property to anyone; we have booked our third consecutive trip for next year.

Brilliant stay to top of a family wedding

  • 4 of 5

We had the pleasure of not only fantastic hosts in Trevor and Chris but a glorious heat wave. What more do you want....!

Thanks to you both for all the additional help especially on the day of arrival. We would love to be back at some point in the not to distant future.

If you're looking for a rural retreat then look no further, we loved it.

Idyllic setting with most amazing natural peace and quiet

  • 5 of 5

Hidden away down a long drive we came to our retreat. The superbly furnished Barn was rebuilt to a very high standard by Trevor. Christine and Trevor couldn't have been more helpful. They provided everything you could possibly need. The pool was just about warming up and ready for swimming in. The roads were so quiet while we were there it made driving easy to other villages and restaurants a pleasure. It's in a great position for visiting tourist attractions in the region. Definitely on our list to revisit. Thanks Trevor and Christine.
