Overview

About the property

2 Farmhouse apartments, each with 3 bedrooms and 14 x 5 m private pool

This is a good opportunity to experience a summer holiday in the lovely Garfagnana region of Tuscany. Villa Cigiano di Sotto, is on a a small traditional Tuscan farm, on the edge of the medieval walled village of Castiglione. Recently voted as one of the loveliest villages in Italy, Castiglione has three restaurants, three cafes and small shops.

There is a large courtyard, good for eating outside with BBQ as well as a covered dining veranda with stunning mountain views. The pool is a large 14 metres by 5 metres with a large sun terrace and fantastic views of the spectacular Apuane Mountains.

There is also a recreation room, with internet access.

Situated in the stunningly beautiful Garfagnana region and with fine views of the Apuane mountains, Cigiano di Sotto is holiday farm accommodation in 2 apartments rented together, with 3 bedrooms in each apartment sleeping 6 people, perfect for a large group of up to 12 people. Baby cots are also available.

The location is quiet and peaceful with the benefit of village facilities within a short walk.

Castiglione is one of the main villages of the Garfagnana, arguably the most beautiful part of all Tuscany. There are 2 restaurants, 3 cafes and several shops in the village, which has regular fetes and festivals, including a fine medieval festival in August. There is a great view of the ancient Castello from the farm. The farm makes its own wine, fine preserves, cheeses and other dairy produce.

In each of the roomy apartments there are 2 double bedrooms and 1 twin bedroom. The apartments also have roomy lounge / dining / kitchen areas, fully equipped with modern utilities, and a modern bathroom in each. There is also a lovely shaded outdoor dining space with lovely views of the mountains.

We can help arrange mountain biking, hill walking, horse riding, gorge walking, art classes and cooking classes which are all available locally.

flies will drive you crazy

  • 2 of 5

The views are stunning ,would have been nice if the owners had met up with us ,but spoke no english anyway.

Property had everything that was required , the let down was the flies , hundreds of them , it does not help that it is a working farm and the cow shed is under and next door to where you are staying , you can see from the windows the cows and dung which attract more flies ,it is a impossible situation ,if you close the windows there is no air and hot ,there is no air con to keep it cool .

Unless you happy staying around the pool , a car is a must ,just to get you to the shops , be aware that the shops have the basic goods ,even those further out do not have very much to offer , we spoke to a local who spoke good english ,he said most locals grow their own produce , make their own wine ,keep their animals for milk ,butter etc ,that is why there is so little in the shops ,i will let you decide if the restaurant across from your property is cheap ,we had 9 pizzas 4 beers ,5 soft drinks, 1 bottle red house wine ,it came to £145

Not for people who find walking hard

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review, we always appreciate feedback. The house has lovely views, is well equipped and comfortable and many guests have had a lovely holiday here. I am aware that the owner allowed you extend your stay, at your request, free of charge. It is unfortunate that you had a negative experience during your stay, as over the last five years of letting this house, we have never received feedback of this nature before. There are fly screens on the windows, like in many houses, so they can be opened to cool the house and keep any insects out. This house is around 300 metres from the nearest shop in the village which sells fresh bread, fresh dairy produce, eggs, dried goods, tinned goods, cakes/biscuits, jars of sauces / jams / olives / pickles, soft and alcoholic drinks, cleaning materials and has a well-stocked deli counter with cold meats and cheeses. In addition, the village has a well-stocked fresh fruit and vegetable shop. There are two large supermarkets which sell everything you could possibly want (including fresh meat and fish) around 3kms away. In the nearby restaurant there is a menu and pizza’s cost between 5 – 9 euro each and the house wine is 7 euro. Perhaps you ordered more expensive items. The area is known for very reasonably priced restaurants with excellent food. We hope you return to Tuscany and we would be delighted to assist you again in future.

Great Holiday!

  • 5 of 5

I just got back from a week in this farmhouse and had a brilliant time. I stayed there with family to celebrate a birthday and there were 15 of us in total. The views are absolutely amazing and photos don't do it justice, literally breath-taking. The fact that you are within walking distant of the village is a great bonus and we went in every afternoon for our daily ice cream, delicious. There's also a small playground in the village which is shaded and secure so great for the kids. The pool at the house is a great size and many happy hours were spent splashing around. There's adequate outdoor seating and a barbeque which is great in the warm evenings. Also the shutters on the windows were fantastic if you wanted a lie in. The apartments had everything you would need, washing machine, dishwasher, coffee maker etc. The owners live next door but it still felt very private and they left us alone. The have no English but were extremely friendly and went out of their way to help us when necessary. There's a great drive you can do from here (takes around 1.5 hours) that goes through San Pellegrino where the views are outstanding. There's a restaurant right across the road which does lovely takeaway pizzas. I would highly recommend this farmhouse and this region of Tuscany and can't wait to go back.

Pleasant location but not as expected

  • 3 of 5

This location is well furnished and the swimming pool is large and pleasant. It is located in remote village in the countryside. The nice medieval village is very small, but you can find all what you need at a short distance. A car is required.

The owners are really lovely and helpful, but the farm nearby with animals should be clearly known as it generates a lot of insects. Around the pool, a lot of horseflies, wasps and flies, ensure you have some insect repellant and nobody is allergic.

The booking was not properly handled and we were not expected when arriving despite a payment and booking 2 months in advance. Lack of communication and coordination between the owners and the local contact of the rental agency.

Hopefully this was an exception and thanks to the flexibility of my friends, we were able to arrange an alternative for the 1st night across the road with the lovely Restaurant Castello.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the feedback. I'll look into wifi issue and get them resolved as it should be available in the house too. The house has small windows in the traditional style to keep it cool in summer as most of the time is spent out of doors and people come inside to cool down. The view is truly manificant as you say. Once again, your review is appreciated. Andrew McKean, Friends of Tuscany

Situated in the wonderfully scenic area in Tuscany known as the Garfagnana, the farm has fantastic views. The centre of the medieval village of Castiglione is only 500 metres from the farm, and the castle and walls can be seen from the house. Recently the village was voted as one of the nicest villages in all of Italy.

Outstanding outdoor activities are easily available in the region, and the local horse riding stables are only 10 minutes walk.

The area is also well known for its excellent value restaurants, using the best of local ingredients. A typical set lunch with 4 choices of pasta course, and 4 choices of main course costs only € 10 inclusive of bread, wine and coffee. It is possible to have a multi-course traditional Sunday lunch or dinner with ample wine, coffee and liqueurs for less than

€ 25.

Garfagnana is the best area in Tuscany for walking.

We have links with an outdoor activities company who offer guided walks and climbing, mountain biking, canoeing and world class gorge walking.

Friends of Tuscany provide good local information and recommendations.

The local market town of Castelnuovo with good shops is only 6 kms away.

To reach the area you go from Pisa to Lucca, then North to Castelnuovo. Exact directions given. The Google Co-ordinates are 44.152405, 10.410752

There is an English speaking, Mini-bus taxi driver available for airport or local trips.
