About the property

Castle villa with pool, garden, play area, stunning views - 3 bedrooms, sleeps 6

La Rocca is a unique villa, within the ramparts of the ancient castello of the medieval town of Coreglia in the beautiful and unspoilt Garfagnana / Mediavalle area of Tuscany.

This is a wonderful opportunity to experience life within the walls of an ancient castle on the edge of a medieval Tuscan village. The villa enjoys excellent views over the village rooftops and mountains beyond. The large and well kept garden has several peaceful areas, all within the perimeter wall of the old castello.

The rooms are comfortably furnished with antiques and reminders of past times, giving the villa an interesting and unique atmosphere. The decoration is beautifully old fashioned, with unusual features.

There is an 8 x 3 metre 'fun' pool in the garden, good for playing in or cooling off.

There are 3 bedrooms in the house, 2 doubles and 1 twin.

Although there is good road access to La Rocca, the ancient walled town of Coreglia is almost traffic free so the peaceful village is very safe for children to explore, or lovely just for a stroll. During summer there are festivals within the Old Town, including an excellent medieval festival in July.

There are 3 restaurants and 2 cafes in the town.

The medieval town of Barga, with its jazz and opera festivals is a few kilometres away and can be seen from the village.

This beautiful, unique old castello villa has a superb garden with a lovely pergola walkway, private out of ground pool, outdoor shower, childrens' play area and superb views. There is a private driveway with parking.

Free Wi-Fi connection is available in the house.

Some more fascinating information about La Rocca can be found at https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/the-rocca-fortifications

We can help arrange mountain biking, hill walking, horse riding, gorge walking, art classes and cooking classes which are all available locally.

Guestbook comments from the owner

“Peaceful, fresh and very relaxing”

4 out of 5

The location of the house is spectacular - great views and garden and the height of the place ensures a freshness of air which was very welcome in August. Facilities were good, lots of nice places to sit in the large garden and some toys, swing and slide for chlldren although a toddler swing would be a good idea (was quite frustrating for our toddler not to be able to use it). Pool was fine - worked for us because we had very small children and so we didn't have to worry about them falling in but a proper pool would look a lot better. Some of the furniture could do with an update - garden chairs and the mattress in the second smaller room but all in all good value for money compared to similar lets in the region and a lovely, relaxing place to stay. We all had a great time and would definitely come back.

This is an absolutely beautiful house and garden in a pretty village

  • 5 of 5

La Rocca is a stunning, beautiful place full of eccentric charm and we loved our time there. The house and garden are full of interesting nooks and crannies to discover, and interesting antiques. We loved making a fire in the pizza oven and baking pizzas in the lovely garden room.

We thought that if anything the house is over stocked with stuff and it took us a while to find everything. It would be good to know more about what is there and where to find it. For example there is an extensive first aid kit but you wouldn't necessarily find it if you needed it. There is enough crockery in the house to host a banquet!

We felt, like another reviewer, that the copious amount of plastic furniture in the garden spoilt the way it looks a bit and questioned whether a house that sleeps six needed seating for around 38! However we found this amusing rather than annoying. We thought the description and instructions could have been a bit clearer eg what to do with the rubbish.

The village is interesting. A lovely place to wander around. There is a good walk along the river which is described in the visitors book. There is very little in the way of facilities in the village. We couldn't find bread or fresh vegetables so it is important to arrive well stocked. It is quite a long drive back down the winding road to the nearest supermarket.

Nearby Barga is a beautiful little town to visit and the drive through mountain roads to get there is stunning.

Lucca is breathtaking and a highlight of our holiday.

We would definitely return to La Rocca.

Owner's Response: Dear Kate, Thank you very much for leaving us a review. We agree this house is indeed very special, due to the many original features throughout the house and garden. The garden and views are unparalleled in this area and there is of course the added bonus of the fresh fruit and herbs that the garden provides for our guests. We will certainly pass on your recommendations to the owners and will work with them to provide more detailed information about the workings of the house. There are two shops in the village of Coreglia Antellminelli, which from our experience sell bread, milk, cheese, meat and other essential groceries. The house is in an excellent position to explore the best towns and villages in the area such as Barga and we are delighted you managed to explore a little. We would love to welcome you back to Tuscany in the near future and we can offer you a 'Friends of Tuscany' returners discount. Thank you again for the lovely review. Best Wishes, Molly McKean Friends of Tuscany Ltd www.friendsoftuscany.com

Best holiday we have had so far. The Tuscan scenery is beautiful.

Everything lived up to expectations. Fabulous property and exceptional gardens. Visits to Florence, Lucca and Pisa in easy reach and certainly worth a visit although the church, museum and restaurants in Coreglia itself are great. Would love to visit again. The "distressed" look in the villa itself is not to my taste but otherwise a truly idealistic place to stay.

Beautiful garden, comfortable house and a charming (if sleepy) village

  • 4 of 5

A lovely spacious property, with a large, well-tended garden and plenty of tables, chairs and loungers for outdoor living. The house too was well equipped - except for the lack of a working coffee pot - we counted four in the kitchen but none functional so we bought one. But that aside this was a wonderfully tranquil place to spend a week. The views from the garden towards the mountains and down to the village are beautiful, the swimming pool was very welcome at the end of a hot day visiting Lucca and Barga and our contact person Nora was helpful and friendly.

Reaching Coreglia in the dark on our first night was a bit of a challenge - it is at the top of a hill

and at the end of a winding road. The house itself is at the very top of the village and is reached by a steep and narrow driveway, providing excellent opportunities to practice hill starts and three-point turns.

Beautiful garden, very large with fruit trees, lots of flowers, a clean, prefab swimming pool and playthings for children!

The house is old, but charming and everything you might be needing during your holiday is present.

A beautiful property with an amazing garden and views over the rooftops of the village below.

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at La Rocca - a very historic building in a lovely village. It was a great base for exploring the local area and we particularly enjoyed our trip to Lucca. The garden is breathtaking with cherries, figs and roses. The views from every window are fantastic - a great place to stay if you want to experience Tuscany at its best.

Beautiful villa and gardens, breathtaking views

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful two weeks in La Rocca, and honestly, felt privileged to be there. The hilltop location of the villa means that it has spectacular views of the village and surrounding countryside in all directions. There are so many places in the gorgeous (and undeniably expansive!) gardens to sit and just try to take it all in. We loved it.

The antique furniture, objects and artwork in the house made it a lovely place to be and the pool was a welcome addition on hot days. I particularly loved the summer-house kitchen with authentic pizza-oven. Everything was well looked after and maintained and Nora, the house manager was fantastic, helping us out with everything from we needed to know.

We used public transport to get around and, while the trains were great, found the local bus service was a little limited. We would definitely hire a car if we were returning (and we would love to go back to La Rocca) so that we could see even more of this beautiful part of Tuscany. That said, even without a car, it was a fantastic two weeks, chilling out, enjoying everything Coreglia had to offer (including a pretty impressive Medieval festival!) and visiting Florence and Lucca. In short, La Rocca is a wonderful place to stay and we wouldn't hestitate to recommend it to anyone who wants to visit Northern Tuscany.

Coreglia is an ancient hill town, voted some years ago to be one of the nicest villages in Italy. The streets are traffic free, making it safe for children to explore. Recently the village featured in the BBC programme 'Who do you think you are' which traced the actress Susan Sarandon's family to Coreglia. The village was famous in the 19C for its beautifully crafted figurines, and there is an interesting museum dedicated to the art. In 2005 Coreglia was voted as one of the nicest villages in Italy

The Garfagnana/ Mediavalle area is recreational, superb for walking, mountain biking, fishing and other outdoor activities. We have links with an outdoor activities agency 'Apuans Exploring Mountains'. Nearby Castelnuovo is a market town with fine shops and a weekly market. Also nearby are the resort towns of Bagni di Lucca, with its famous spa baths, and Barga, with its music festivals and art. The art city of Lucca is only 30 minutes drive, and there is a local train service.

At Friends of Tuscany we give lots of local info and recommendations
