Betws-Y-Coed is not too far and Snowdon is also easily reached. There are many historical sites to be visited, as well as the Victorian pier at Llandudno. Golf courses, riding, cycling, fishing and bird watching, locally. Shops, supermarket and pubs within 3 miles.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We have stayed in river cottage a few times and absolutely love it, it really is like a home from home! Everything you need nestled in the beautiful Welsh countryside our dogs love coming here they walk for miles! You have everything on your doorstep from walks in Snowdonia to all the coastline beaches! So glad Gwenda & Dave have carried on renting this out as we were gutted our Welsh holidays would come to an end when this beautiful cottage was sold. So looking forward to June! See you then ☺

Cosy Escape

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is a lovely place to stay and was delightfully prepared for our arrival. All our necessities were thoroughly catered for and true to the advertisement. This more than century old cottage is cosy and attractive, the bed linen beautiful and the large double bed very comfortable. The neighbours were friendly and helpful and the German shepherd, although nervous of other dogs, responded well to us and appreciated attention. With its single track approach roads the hamlet gives a great sense of escape without being so far from ‘civilisation’. It is set in a scenic valley and provides a great base for exploring North Wales. We made the St Asaph river walk our routine trek because it was ideal for dogs and likewise, as a change from Snowdonia, recommend exploring the Offas Dyke path ‘Marilyns’ along the Pennycloddiau, Moel Famau stretch. There are many dog friendly pubs and our table was laid with a dog biscuit place setting on our second visit to the excellent Dinorben at Bodfari. Our many thanks to the cottage owners.

Quiet, peaceful, beutiful

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely quiet location, secluded and safe. The cottage is very well equipped with everything you could want, clean, comfortable. It is a great base for exploring the whole of North Wales. My only recommendation is you go there and enjoy.

Local knowledge is invaluable

  • 1 of 5

We should have asked for more details about the property before committing to it. It wouldn`t be fair to comment too much because it was totally our fault for not investigating further and not planning properly. The cottage was too small for our needs and as we soon found out was not in the right place for where we wanted to spend our days.

The nearest place to eat in St Asaph was not an easy distance away and was very run-down and as luck would have it the chef at the pub in Henllan was on holiday!

The Alsation dog next door was a worry as it barked aggressively every time it saw us through the window and so local walks with our two dogs were curtailed because we were concerned it might get loose. Obviously, this was something we could not have foreseen and you only find out about these things once you get there.

We haven`t done this type of holiday before and it has taught us a valuable lesson about proper research.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to post a review. We are really sorry you did not enjoy your holiday in our cottage. We apologise for the local hostelries but as you can appreciate this is beyond our control. We would like to say your fears around next doors dog are totally unfounded....they are very responsible dog owners. We do feel that your one star rating is unfair as we welcome guests to ask questions before booking and always answer them to the best of our knowledge. Gwenda and Dave

Great lovely cottage in a Nice surrounding

  • 4 of 5

Nice quiet cottage in the middle of lot of activities, near Snowdonia, Liverpool, beautiful Chester and several nice golfcourses. The cottage contains lot of equipment. The reason for only 4 stars is the carpeting, especially when you accept pets. We will recommand this cottage to friends and family. The road to this cottage is a real adventure from every direction, keeps you awake.

Comfortable and we'll equipped. We slept well in our comfortable beds.

  • 5 of 5

We were pleased with our welcome drinks and chocolates and a phone call to ask if all was well on the first evening. Each day we had good weather and visited a different area , eg Llandudno, Conway, Penryhn Castle, Bodnant Gardens. It is a lovely area .

We loved this cosy, quiet & relaxing Welsh cottage!

  • 5 of 5

The owners are extremely efficient & responsive. All queries were answered very quickly. The cottage is cosy, clean & comfortable & easily accommodates a family of four. We arrived to a lovely, luxurious & thoughtful welcome pack. Access instructions were very clear. The cottage is positioned perfectly giving you peace & quiet & the most beautiful views. The wildlife is incredible & the sounds of the countryside are all around. We were never bored. Easy access to Snowdonia, Llandudno, Betws-y-Coed & the lovely city of Chester to name but a few. We would recommend Bodnant Gardens & a hike up Snowdon, (take care & plan for tough going!) Also a horse drawn barge in Llangollen is a lovely way to spend an hour or so. Even a night in in front of the wood burning stove or a glass of wine sitting at the table outside the front was a lovely experience. We ate at The Bod Erw & whilst the food was fairly good, it was pricey & lacked atmosphere for a Friday night. We were disappointed that we left it too late to book The Plough. This was clearly very popular so speaks for itself. We can recommend the sandwich shop on the Main Street in St Asaph. Doesn't look much but does really good sandwiches. Care should be taken when driving to the cottage from St Asaph as the roads are single lane & whilst quiet in the main, when you do meet another vehicle, be prepared to do some occasional reversing. What a lovely place to spend a holiday. We definitely hope to return!
