Review #14589352 “Detached cottage in the village of Dent. Yorkshire Dales National Park”

Do not believe them when they say "dog friendly"

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

We had a lovely stay at the cottage for one week in April. The location is perfect and the cottage is beautiful. Unfortunately on the advert it does say "dog friendly" but this is not the case. Now in the Yorkshire dales if you can take your dog long walks and not get them muddy at the end by all means, go. If you are like any other dog owner do not take your four legged friends. On review of the house we were not told dogs were not allowed upstairs in any emails or on any documents we have read anywhere, but we were left with no name at the end of our trip getting accused of all sorts to "cover up" where the dog had been. Had it been made CLEAR in the house brochure and also via email before arrival we would never have had our dog in the upstairs. The owners are definitely not dog owners themselves unless they have a hairless dog with no legs. Like I've said its a really pity that we got a disgusting email after our stay, we really did enjoy ourselves but we will never apologise for our dog in a so called dog friendly cottage. After an expensive week away we were then told we would not get our deposit back because of "dog hairs" and "mud marks" - in a "dog friendly" cottage? I also believe they should state that anyone planning a trip to this cottage should not bring young chrildren, muddy teenagers or anyone with an ounce of fun in them. One t.v, none in the rooms, no games, no docking system - boring. Good job the weather was good and we managed to get out the house or we would have been scared to sneeze. We are decent people and would never go out our way to make a mess of a lovely house. But we didn't realise having fun and walking our dog would cause so much trouble and after an expensive week it's very sad we had our money taken from us for ridiculous accusations. Please anyone thinking of booking, NO TODDLERS, NO DO

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to post your review. We are pleased to hear that you had a good holiday and that you like the cottage, but very sorry that you don't agree that your damage to the property warranted retention of the deposit. You didn't reply to our initial email outlining the issues. However we would be very happy to discuss this matter further, so please feel free to get in touch.

A great family Christmas!

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we entered the quaint village of Dent, to finally relaxing after unpacking I don't think I stopped saying things like....... oh, this is lovely.......look at this ...... what a fabulous place......this is perfect!

And it was!

The house was beautifully furnished and equipped with everything you need. (except a potato masher..... but I think we considered that a minor inconvenience!! ) For a large house that sleeps eight people it manages to be spacious, yet cosy at the same time. Everyone loved it. There are four showers! What a luxury. No queueing for bathrooms.

We had a lovely family Christmas at the Methodist Manse. We tried both the pubs in the village, where everyone was friendly and welcoming. We had lovely evenings where we cooked a meal all together in the lovely social space that was the kitchen and dining area. Then we relaxed in front of the log burner in the lounge.

The only downside was the weather..... but we didn't let that spoil things.

All in all we had a wonderful Christmas holiday in the Methodist Manse.

We'd love to see Dent again sometime, maybe in better weather so that we can appreciate the surroundings as well. But as far as the house is concerned, .....book it, you won't be disappointed.

Location

Stay in Dentdale you will find yourself immersed in stunning scenery, natural beauty, deep heritage and the culture of a Dales community that has over many years attracted painters, poets and musicians. Dentdale provides the ideal place to escape the pressures of everyday life and is perfectly placed in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, on the edge of Cumbria, providing a convenient base for visiting no only the many attractions of the Dales, but also The Lake District National Park with Windermere & the lakes less than 25 miles away.

Here you can relax and unwind amongst breath taking scenery; spend your days strolling through rolling countryside, enjoying riverside walks, or exploring the towns and hills in the nearby Dales and Lakes - every day escaping the crowds to return back to your own little corner of peace and tranquility.

There are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy in the area which is a haven for walkers where stunning countryside and wildlife abound. A vast array of footpaths criss cross the landscape allowing you to explore the area including the Heritage Trail and intriguing Flintergill. Alternatively, take a more sedate stroll alongside the River Dee. Cycling is another popular pursuit with pretty country lanes for a leisurely ride and off-road tracks providing an excellent way of experiencing the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales and also the Pennine Cycleways which call be accessed directly via Dentdale village.

The Settle-Carlisle Railway passes through Dentdale (stopping at its station which is the highest in England!) and is one of the most spectacular railway journeys in the world. You can take a train to Carlisle or Leeds for a great day out and sit back and enjoy the stunning views of the Yorkshire Dales and Pennines on your way. There are special steam hauled trains that you can travel on from mid May until the end of August.

Dent Village has a Heritage Centre which reveals the working lives of the Dale's people since the 16th Century and the Meditation Centre which is an ideal place for quiet contemplation. The village also has three pubs and two cafes offering the opportunity to enjoy a meal out or pint of local ale at the end of a long walk!

With wonderful walking, spectacular scenery and so many places within easy reach both within the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria, you are sure to want to return time and time again to this peaceful paradise.
