The Barn

The traditional oak-framed barn is a spacious open plan area with 2 small alcove bedrooms (a twin & a double) and a deluxe en suite bedroom downstairs with its own garden – perfect for the larger family with younger children.

The Carpenter Oak Barn is constructed with heavy oak beams and trusses, interspersed with glass giving it a wonderful rustic, warm and spacious feeling.

The front door is reached by a wooden staircase to a private balcony overlooking the grass tennis court.

The kitchen/dining area is at one end of the main living area and has an electric oven and hob, a fridge freezer, a microwave and a dishwasher.

At the other end is a spacious, but cozy, sitting area with comfy sofas and armchairs, a sofa bed, a grand piano, a colour TV, DVD player and hi-fi. The oak floor is covered with very old oriental rugs.

The upstairs bathroom has a roll top bath and the downstairs bathroom has a bath a shower. There is a separate small utility room with a WC, a sink and a washer/dryer.

About the property

Peace and quiet at Fingals

Set in the South Hams, an area of outstanding natural beauty, Fingals Folly and Barn are in a truly romantic valley setting among their own lush gardens.

The indoor swimming pool is heated and surrounded by exotic plants and has doors to a sauna and a gym. You are welcome to wander in the luscious and colourful gardens, play croquet on the lawn, play tennis on the immaculate grass tennis court (only useable in the summer months of course) and use the Games room with snooker, table football and ping pong on the terrace outside.

Fingals is a mile away from Dittisham, a beautiful village sited on the edge of the River Dart. There are many popular National Trust spots right on our doorstep, including Greenway House, Agatha Christie's recently restored summer house and gardens are just across the river, Coleton Fishacre (a spectacular house and garden designed by Milne (a disciple of Lutyens) in 1925 for Rupert and Lady Dorothy D'Oyly Carte (of Gilbert and Sullivan fame). There are also many delights a short drive away including the renowned Devon beaches, the Sharpham Estate (a huge Grade 2 listed house with beautiful gardens offering courses of different kinds, tours of the vineyard, fabulous food in the Cafe and panoramic views of the river right up to Totnes). Dartington Hall and Gardens (another beautiful Grade 2 listed house with an extraordinary history offering many different courses) and Dartmoor National Park. Below we have listed a selection of some of our favourite things to do locally.

The River Dart for sailing, canoeing and ferries.

We are 6 miles from Dartmouth and Totnes - for wonderful shopping and markets - and near the coast for exploring, swimming and walking.

The South West Coast Path (a short drive away) is England's longest waymarked long-distance footpath and a National Trail and the Dart Valley Trail goes right past out door and is one of the area's truly great walks. This daylong ramble follows the wooded banks of the broad and beautiful river Dart, on a route crammed with gems and jewels of human and natural history.

A stay at Fingals offers you a true break in a different time and will re-charge your batteries and re-light that twinkle in your eye.

The Barn is truly a great place for a family holiday - perfect for three generations as Granny can sleep in peace downstairs! A safe and enclosed space for children, large windows and a balcony giving grandstand views of the grass tennis court - cheer on your kids while you relax with a drink above! Why not leave the TV alone in the evenings and teach them board games, jigsaw puzzles - or to play the Grand Piano in the middle of the room! You might also have a great game of 'I Spy' as you spot all the weird and wonderful artefacts up on the beams - from an ancient sewing machine to antique skis or African figures. We hope that there is everything here - in The Barn and around the rest of Fingals - to provide you with a super holiday at any time of the year.

About Richard and Sheila Johnston

Richard and Sheila have owned this property for around 35 years and have lovingly restored it since then. We are both keen tennis players, hence the immaculate grass tennis court! Other passions are the arts, wonderful countryside, walking with our dogs on the Coast Path or the moor, all animals (we have goats, doves and ducks) and wildlife. Gardening keeps us fit - we have lawns surrounded by mature shrubs and colour and fragrance are everywhere.

Richard and Sheila Johnston purchased this barn in 1980

Why Richard and Sheila Johnston chose Dartmouth

Richard fell in love with Fingals 35 years ago when he cycled past it and saw through the crumbling old building to his vision of a romantic retreat where people could come and stay and recharge their batteries away from their busy lives. Many years later Fingals offers just this - quirky properties to stay in, gardens to relax in and a heated swimming pool in a conservatory surrounded by exotic plants - which may drop the odd leaf into the pool below! (By the way it wasn't always called Fingals - that was the name of Richards beloved Dalmatian). Being close to the river offers fabulous possibilities for boat trips and picnics and excursions. A huge amount of work has been carried out over the years and a retreat full of art, music and happy vibes now inhabits the valley. There is also a small amount of modern technology and you will have Wifi but still no mobile phone signal!

What makes this barn unique

Fingals is an unusual property, remote and tucked down narrow Devon lanes, but close to Totnes, Dittisham and Dartmouth. Your own home from home on holiday, this is a glorious spot with gardens for lazy days or a swimming pool, Games Room, sauna, croquet, grass tennis also on site. If you need to venture further afield there are beaches, Dartmoor, the River Dart, the South West Coastal Path and National Trust properties to enjoy.

Fingals is set in a Devon Valley with lush, colourful gardens, a grass tennis court, croquet lawn, swimming pool, sauna and gym - all of which are free to use by our guests. There is an honesty bar, open all the time, plus a restaurant which serves meals twice a week. A delightful walk of just one mile will take you past Dittisham Mill Creek and the River Dart to the pretty village of Dittisham which has two pubs (one of which houses the village shop and post office), a fantastic waterside cafe and a ferry across to Greenway, holiday home to Agatha Christie now owned by the National Trust. There are other lovely Trust properties close by - Coleton Fishacre at Kingswear, Overbecks at Salcombe, Saltram House at Plymouth and others a short drive away. The River Dart offers all kinds of possibilities for adventures - from crabbing on the village pontoon to endless boat trips, sailing lessons, paddle boarding, kayaking or just pottering. Our closest stretch of the South West Coast Path is stunning - secluded coves and rock pooling beaches, panoramic clifftop views - it can be quite strenuous but there will be a glorious cafe or pub somewhere along your route for a little libation or refreshment. There are two steam trains, a zoo, wildlife park and hundreds of acres of Dartmoor to explore. It can be very quiet here out of season when only the birds and wildlife will entertain you, but if you prefer a more lively time then come when the Dartmouth Music/Comedy/Food Festivals or Regatta are taking place. There really is something for everyone. The only thing we can't provide is a mobile phone signal but there is free wifi and landline phones in all bedrooms. If there is anything else you would like to know please call us - we'd love to help and to see you here at Fingals for a holiday.
