Overview

About the property

Lovely 2 bedroom cottage on the edge of Wasdale. Sleeps up to 4. Stunning views.

Welcome to Goosepen Cottage, a beautiful and spacious barn conversion situated at Hallflat Farm, in the quiet Western Lake District. Our spacious yet cosy cottage is located in Santon Bridge, Wasdale, and has stunning views up the Wasdale valley.

The cottage sleeps up to 4 people in two bedrooms and has a full self-catering kitchen, living/dining room with log burner, bathroom and separate toilet. The 'upside down' accommodation has the living area upstairs, to take full advantage of the fantastic scenery. The fully enclosed garden has two seating areas, one south facing and one west facing, make the most of the sun and provide alfresco dining with a view.

The cottage is surrounded by fields, woods and impressive hills and mountains and yet is only 200m from a pub serving good beer and quality food.

Goosepen Cottage is one of a handful of properties at Hallflat Farm, and is named from the old goose pen that is now occupied by the cottage garden. Tucked away in a quiet spot away from the road and farm entrance, the cottage oozes character with many original features, including exposed stone walls and original oak beams. The cottage has full gas central heating in addition to the wood burner, to keep you warm and cosy on those colder days.

The main living area is on the first floor, giving you a fantastic view up the Wasdale valley from the kitchen window. The open plan living and dining area has two large sofas, a wood burner (initial wood supplied), TV, iPod docking station (Lightning connection) and DVD player, a dining table for 6 and many other comforts (including a PS2 for the kids among us). The kitchen contains an oven, electric hob, washing machine and cooking / cleaning utensils. An upper external door leads to a small seating area which catches the last of the day's sun, and onwards to the lower, south facing, outdoor terrace with seating and a wonderful view up the valley.

Downstairs has two bedrooms, bathroom, separate toilet and hallway.

The first bedroom has a standard size double bed together with wardrobe and chest of drawers for your storage.

The second bedroom can be set up as a twin (2 x 2ft 6 beds) or these can be pushed together for a king size double (with mattress cover) (see photos). The room also has a wardrobe.

The bathroom has a shower over the bath. Although small, the toilet is conveniently separate to the bathroom making things easier in the morning!

The cottage has a dedicated broadband and wifi.

Guests also have use of a shed (possible bike storage) and a bbq (but please bring your own charcoal and sausages). The cottage is fenced in to make it harder for dogs and small children to run away.

About Roz Lomas & Dave Goodman

Roz and Dave have been coming to Wasdale for most of their lives and grabbed the opportunity to purchase Goosepen Cottage in 2015. Goosepen Cottage, and Hallflat Farm, is a very special place for us.

Roz has been coming to Hallflat Farm on a regular basis for almost 40 years – from annual childhood family holidays in the slightly lesser comfort of a caravan, to more recent times in Goosepen - it has been a holiday cottage for over 20 years. We both know the area very well and are keen hikers – we've done most of the local peaks and Dave has led many a group of walkers up the Wasdale fells over the years. We look forward to welcoming you to this very special part of the Lake District and hope that you will love it as much as we do!

Cozy Cottage

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely time and enjoyed the comfort of the cottage and the lovely views from the sitting room and kitchen windows. The owners have been very thoughtful in their provision of equipment and kitchen utensils. It is a very useful base for exploring Eskdale, Wast Water and the nearby coast. There are lovely walks to be had and The Bridge Inn is warm and welcoming when you want to be refreshed after a day in the November fresh air. Parking two cars was a bit interesting but we managed and I found the low oven a little difficult but someone with well oiled hips wouldn't have a problem with it. The wood burning stove made sure that we kept warm on the cold evenings and provided a lovely feeling of comfort while we relaxed with a book or the Scrabble that was provided. The woodpeckers, chaffinches, jays and goldfinches kept us entertained at breakfast time - who could ask for more?

Owner's Response: Hi Barbara, thank you for your review and we’re so glad you enjoyed your stay at Goosepen. Yes the local bird life here is wonderful, but I’m jealous of you seeing a woodpecker. The friendly Bridge Inn is a great asset to the area. Sorry you found the parking a little “interesting”, we regularly have two estate cars on the drive but the fencing can mean that newcomers might need to shuffle a couple of times to get the angle right at first. We really hope that we can welcome you back at Goosepen in the future. Take care, Roz and Dave.

Fantastic cottage

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week at Goosepen and throughly enjoyed it. Right from the start dealing with Roz and Dave was a pleasure and nothing was too much. The cottage itself has got heaps of character and is in a superb location for walks, pubs and general site seeing. It was fantatically equipped for a two bed and made us feel very comfortable.

We will definetly return.

Lovely cosy cottage in a quiet corner of the Lake District

  • 5 of 5

Goosepen cottage gave us a perfect base for exploring this lovely part of the Lake District . The cottage was very cosy and warm with plenty of hot water for baths following long walks in the fells . The Bridge Inn just down the road serves great meals and are very happy to have dogs in the bar and a very easy walk home even in the dark ! ! Roz and Dave were very helpful with the few requests we had .

The property was spacious and very comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

The property is in an ideal position for touring the Western Lakes. Nearby is Wasdale where you will find plenty of walks and the deepest lake in England to admire. Ravenglass where you can access the Steam train which leads to further country walks and Muncaster Castle are also close by. To rest those tired legs there are several pubs close by selling good food with two together in the village of Wasdale which is in a lovely spot.

Perfect Stay!

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a 2 night stay at Goosepen Cottage and can't recommend it enough, homely, comfortable and spotlessly clean. The living area is open plan, and very cosy when the lovely woodburner is going, a real home from home, everything you need, and plenty of information on local walks in the area. The pub is a few minutes walk from the cottage & serves great food, well worth a visit after a long day walking! There is ample parking, and a lovely seating area outside for the warmer evenings with stunning views. This is a beautiful location, & perfect for anyone wanting to visit the Western Fells, you won't be disappointed and we will definitely be back! Thank you Roz and Dave.

Characterful west lakeland cottage

  • 4 of 5

Characterful, great views, lovely fire and open plan upper floor and walking distance to a lovely pub! The kitchen is fantastically equipped and the cottage was clean and tidy upon arrival. There were a couple of things which I felt like needed a mid-winter renewal, hence not quite making 5*s! But the owners have been very pleasant, responsive and receptive to deal with throughout.

I was there to recce some fell races in the Wasdale and western lakes area, and really enjoyed getting to know an area of the Lake District which I am less familiar with. Very good access for both Wasdale and Eskdale approaches, and not far from a trip down the coast to Black Coombe. Weather was mixed, but I can't complain with two fantastic days in January. I would definitely come again, if booking somewhere in this part of the Lakes.

Hallflat Farm is located in Wasdale, amongst the stunning scenery of the remote and uncommericalised Western Lake District. Wasdale boasts England's highest mountain (Scafell Pike), deepest lake (Wastwater), smallest church (St Olaf's, Wasdale Head) and Biggest Liar. The World's Biggest Liar is an annual competition held at our local pub, The Bridge Inn, and dates back to the 19th Century when a local landlord, Will Ritson, earned the title with his tall stories about the Wasdale area.

The view of Wasdale from Wastwater was voted 'Britain's Favourite View' by ITV viewers a few years back. Our gallery goes some way to show the dramatic beauty of Wasdale and the surrounding area, and we think this blog captures it very well. Click here for some stunning photos.

There are numerous walks in the area – from high fell walks up famous peaks such as Scafell Pike, Great Gable and Pillar, to valley walks and many others in between. An easy walk from Santon Bridge leads to the open fell above Wasdale and to the top of the famous Wastwater Screes (you can cheat and park up the road too if you want, cutting out a section of tarmac). Rivers and woodland abound, along with a good selection of country pubs. Most of the local pubs are dog friendly and allow man's best friend into the bar.

There are also plenty of non walking activities too – fishing, golf, riding and mountain bikes can all be found close by. The lovely neighbouring valley of Eskdale is home to the Ravenglass and Eskdale Miniature Steam Railway – affectionately known as La'al Ratty – which gives a great day out with a journey from the sea to the heart of the hills. Muncaster Castle and Owl Centre is close by, and you can follow in the footsteps of the Romans at the ancient Hardknott Roman Fort. A little further afield you will find Wordsworth's birthplace in the market town of Cockermouth, Honister Slate mine (with a via Ferrata for the more adventurous) and South Lakes Safari Zoo. The nearest village is Gosforth (approx. 3 miles away) which has a small supermarket and bakery.

The larger Lakeland centres of Keswick, Coniston, Ambleside and Windermere can be reached for a day out too, with some stunning scenery en-route, but are far enough away for Wasdale and the surrounding area to retain it's unique charm.

We would be more than happy to chat with you about the area – we never tire of Wasdale and love to talk about it. It's our favourite view too and we hope you'll agree.
