About the property

A restored 3 bedroom country house located deep in a secluded valley

El Cortijo is one of four properties at Molino la Ratonera. a holiday retreat set in a watermill in a lush river valley. The location of this mill, in the heart of rural inland Andalucia, southern Spain, is within easy reach of Granada with the Alhambra and Albaicin, Malaga, Seville and Cordoba and yet its rural situation provides a haven for wildlife and an excellent environment for walking, birdwatching or relaxing.

We offer a choice of rental properties for short breaks or longer holidays of any duration on a self-catering basis.

El Cortijo is lovely old building used to be the home of the mill owner but had been derelict for 15 years. It has now been restored, retaining many of the original features to provide luxurious holiday accommodation for up to 6 guests in 3 bedrooms.

All the upstairs bedrooms have stunning views down the valley and have high, beamed ceilings. The master bedroom has an ensuite bathroom and on the same floor there is a further double bedroom, a twin and a full bathroom. Downstairs there is a well equipped kitchen, large sitting/dining room with a wood burning stove and a further room which is furnished to be used either as a television room or a further double bedroom allowing a maximum of 8 guests. The large private terrace is accessed from the kitchen.

Returning to the Mill for 2017 after a very successful season last year will be your hosts, Marc and Linda. They will be there to greet you upon arrival and will be available throughout your stay. If you need information regarding the mill or just finding your way around they will be more than happy to help. Marc and Linda will also be running the BBQ in the evening as well as the bar and entertainment. The BBQ will be casual with seating in the open courtyard. For the adults there will be local specialties such as Iberian pork which is delicious done on the BBQ and for the kids there will always be plenty of burgers and chicken. You can let them know what you like and they will do their best to accommodate you. When the mill is busy they like to put on entertainment in the courtyard. Marc does a fun and upbeat rockabilly and rock & roll show, performing live and playing guitar while you sit back and relax under the stars on the mill terrace.

About The Owner

Kath and Andy first moved to Spain in 2001 and ran a holiday rental business near the coast. After 3 years they were looking to expand and take on a new project and that is when they found Molino la Ratonera.

After running the highly successful business for 10 years they are taking a break and handing the reigns over to Marc and Linda who proved themselves the perfect hosts in 2016. They are back for 2017 and hoping many of their new found friends from last year will rejoin them at the mill.

Why The Owner chose Algarinejo

When Kath and Andy first saw the location and entered the dilapidated old mill they could hardly believe their luck. How often do you get the chance to acquire an original example of a way of life long gone? They fell in love with the locality and embarked upon a 3 year restoration project with the aim of preserving this unique example of rural Andalucian life and industry.

What makes this house unique

Kath and Andy have created a holiday centre that provides all the modern comforts in a truly beautiful and tranquil, rural location. Every care has been taken to preserve the original style of the mill complex with a great deal of attention given to the environmental impact of the work. This holiday centre had to work in sympathy with the surroundings to preserve the abundance of wildlife with whom the owners and guests share this magical place.

Although offically part of the municipality of Algarinejo, the nearest village, 2.5 kilometres away, is Zagra with shops, banks, bars, restaurants, swimming pool and castle. Both Zagra and Algarinejo embody the charm of Spain as it has been for decades where friendly, easygoing people welcome you into their lives.

The area is known as El Poniente Granadino (the west of Granada) and is rich in evidence of Andalucia's Moorish past with castles and watchtowers (atalayas) ever present on the horizon.
