A Beautiful cottage in an idyllic location
We spent a lovely 2 weeks holiday here with our children, and found there was plenty of activities and interesting places to see without the need of a car. The cottage has a lovely garden, rich in wildlife (including barn swallows and bats) where we spent most evenings having tea and lapping up the peace and tranquility of our surroundings. Swimming in the river was an absolute delight, especially in the morning before midday when the cruise arrives. The roads are very quiet and you are within easy reach of the beautiful medieval village of St. Sauvant and the lovely abbey of Fontdouce which is well worth a visit. Take the ferry at Chaniers to the other side of the river and follow the cycle trail which is very scenic and also very flat. There are plenty of culturally interesting places to see in Saintes including the Roman ampitheatre and the cathedrals, and our children also enjoyed the river boat trips and the large swimming pool. One of the highlights of our stay was when we caught the train from Saintes to La Rochelle, (a lovely town with plenty of things to see and do) and then took the coach to the Ile de Re with its lovely beaches. All in all we had a great holiday in River Cottage, it was very relaxing and we were blessed with beautiful weather. The village bakery and the small but well stocked supermarket in Chaniers are a gentle stroll from the cottage. I enjoyed nipping up here each morning on the bike and buying fresh baguettes and pain au raisin for breakfast for the family. Nathalie was a wonderful host and made us all feel very welcome. Thankyou Nathalie !

Rustic charm by the river
The property on the whole was as described and has a rustic charm that you would expect of any French farmhouse, Nathalie was not available on arrival day, but we managed to settle in with the assistance of our broken French! Nathalie was very helpful and accommodating throughout all communication. All the kitchen appliances worked, the TV sat was a bit unreliable, not that it mattered and it is worth noting that there in no air conditioning. The river is 50m from the gate, so the property does not overlook the river but there is a lovely garden to relax in. The river was good for fishing and many locals enjoyed swimming off the pontoon at the weekend. The area is quiet but a short walk into town with necessary shops and the main town of Saintes is a short drive for the main supermarket. Perfect place to relax, unwind and hide from the world!

La Ferme de la Baine: Peace, tranquility and so much more.
Of the many times we have visited this, our favourite region of France, this was without doubt the setting which has given us the greatest pleasure. Now our family has 'grown and flown' our requirements are fewer but equally demanding. We look for a home with character within walking distance of a village boulangerie and bar; within driving distance of a larger town with market and restaurants, close to a river (or coast) where fine weather is pretty much guaranteed. La Ferme de la Bain provided all the above and more. On entering the property through the imposing gates, you find yourself within a beautiful garden - which also provided our dining room as we ate every single meal out of doors during our August stay. Nathalie, the owner, will be on hand at your arrival to show you around and, if you wish, provide you with the fascinating history of the property. She is nearby to offer local knowledge and advice but is equally aware that you may wish simply to be left alone - she (and her family) make you feel so welcome without ever intruding into your holiday. The cottage itself was well equipped and provided for all our needs - only two of us but the second bedroom had twin beds so there was provision for a family of four. There was something rather special in having access to the River through our own Porte Privee (combination available in the house) and every day began with a stroll up the riverbank to the village for baguettes, croissants and pain au chocolat whilst the coffee was filtering. Walking back through the village along the road made this an ideal circuit each morning. There are a couple of pontoons near to the property from which we were able to go for a swim in the river - very few people to bother you. The village Creperie is a must and we were really impressed by the menu - well worth an evening meal. Chaniers also has a wonderful butcher's shop and a well stocked Coop (Baguettes available from here when the Boulangerie is closed on Thursday) We spent time just looking at the river, in all its moods, from the bridge by the cottage - beautiful! Saintes offers all one can ask from a larger town and we dined out at Le Parvis which was really quite special. The whole region is steeped in history and the pace of life was calm and easy. If you enjoy reading, eating, drinking, dozing and generally unwinding, I can think of no better place than this. Sincere thanks to Nathalie and her family for sharing this jewel with us. Merci.

Why they chose this property

It is quite a story!
The property was a former agricultural domain, built in 1675. You can still see the date engraved on the front porch, as well as two beautiful écussons on the main house.
It was bought during the french revolution by one of our ancestors, as a 'bien national', while the former owner had to flee France so as not to be killed by the révolutionnaires as he was as an aristocrat and a land lord.
We have managed to pass it down through the generations ! Thanks to the women of the family ! We have bookshelves full of old papers which are fascinating!
There was a farm and its farm house, which is now a cosy gîte, a wine store house : ''le chai'', a dairy : la ''laiterie'', an orangery with high ceiling, the main house ''le logis'' facing the river, with its tower to watch the Charente river, and the mill with seven wheels. Also fields, woods, and vineyards. At one time, we owned two of the seven mill wheels...
The property stretched out to the village probably, at a time when there were no roads, no railways... and transportation of good and and people was done on the Charente river.
Today, and since 2005, we are proud and happy to share it with our guests and they all ove their stay here !

Welcome at La Baine
Nathalie and her family

What makes this property unique

1. Our guests mention a cosy house ! A home-like environment (facilities).
2. The gîte environment is quite special !
3. The sightseeing program is very rich as the area where the gîte is located has a lot to offer !
4. Enjoy the river and the sea, which is only about 50 kms away, beautiful long sandy beaches and pine forests ! A countryside rental is less expensive than a seaside rental, plus being inland means less crowds and more calm !

As soon as you enter the property, you get a sense of uniqueness... as the private driveway takes you straight to the river - we have our own access to the Charente river, and this feeling will last throughout your whole stay... wether you relax in the easy chairs in the garden looking at the old stones around you, go for long walks along the river banks - a very special path from the house takes you to the village to buy your croissants or baguette aux graines, or enjoy melon au pineau bought at the local market, along with Bordeaux white wine in the garden, after touring the pedestrian streets of Saintes and La Rochelle or Cognac, or after a day at the long white sand beaches of the Atlantic or a trip to the local islands (' Aix ' - by boat only ! ' Madame ' - by foot or bike only, ' Oléron ' - drive on a beautiful bridge, ' Ré ', the trendiest), very "bobo" !

We hope you will like to do what we like the most on a perfect summer day with bright blue sky : go to the Alassins beach on the Oléron island, enjoy the waves, their sound, the heat; drive back at sunset and jump in the river where it feels so quiet after the Ocean -;)

Plus, we have listed the top 10 sites in the area, without too much driving.
