Cottage in Castle Combe, Wiltshire in a scenic location beside By Brook river

The property overlooks By Brook, the river which runs through Castle Combe and is ideally positioned for exploring Castle Combe . The village has a convenient car park at the top of the hill, and some on street parking over the bridge at the bottom of the village. There are two pubs and a gift shop Court Cottage Gifts, in the middle of the village. The Manor House Hotel with its Michelin starred restaurant a few minutes walk from the cottage.

A garage is provided for guests to use during their stay at the cottage and additional, free public parking is available opposite Porch House , beside the By Brook .

The living room also has a log burning stove - logs are provided.

The owner has enjoyed this beautiful cottage and exploring the surrounding area for many years. Castle-Combe has long been considered one of the prettiest villages in England and our friends who have used the house have loved the history and beauty of Castle-Combe.

Why Shirley Ungemuth chose Castle Combe

Acquired in 2002 Porch House, Castle Combe is a very special place.A roof beam in the house has been dated to have been felled in 1468 so the property in parts is over 550 years old. The Street it stands on has recently been selected as one of the Top 50 streets in the British Isles and features in Melanie Backe-Hansen's book " Historic Streets and Squares" where she claims it is the most photographed street in England.

Originally a weavers cottage (see the bobbin hooks in the ceiling in the hall) the house is a great blend of old and new which will transport you back to a earlier time while offering today's modern conveniences.

As owners we love it but feel with a 600th anniversary approaching we are simply custodians of this piece of history & look forward to you sharing the same feeli

Notes on accommodation: No pets allowed. A high chair and travel cot can be provided on request at no extra charge. There is a single garage available nearby if required. Outside: To the rear of the property is a private courtyard which leads on to the main garden which is laid to grass & shrubs. There is patio furniture seating for use by guests during their stay at Porch House. All bedding and towels are provided. For stays over over 7 days, linen and towels are changed weekly. Central Heating throughout the cottage keeps the property warm. Large L-shaped hallway with flagstone floor.

A lovely, cosy cottage in a beautiful location

We had a lovely stay in this cottage. The location in a beautiful Cotswold village is excellent. Only downsides: the width of the garage does not cater for bigger MPVs/ SUVs and taller people need to be careful not to bump their heads against beams in the ceilings etc.

Beautiful homely cottage in the perfect location

We had a really fun time over new year. The cottage is lovely and the location is perfect - right by the bridge. Castle Combe was just perfect - lots of lovely pubs, walks and general relaxation. Highly recommended

Amazingly quaint and beautiful house

We loved this town! You’re living in a storybook. So gorgeous and perfectly kept. Idyllic and wonderfully out of the way. You must try the White Hart Wadsworth pub up the street. The owners are fantastic people and the food (and drink of course) is incredible. Conversely the Castle Inn didn’t seem to want our business or they were simply overbooked and couldn’t accommodate us.

Shirley the owner of the house is very prompt at getting back with any questions or issues. Overall we loved it. The apparently newly refurbished fireplace was most welcome and the facilities were surprisingly modern but tastefully installed - all charm remarkably preserved. Only negative - Tall people - watch your heads! Left with only minor bumps (I’m 6’2”) but well worth it!

3 bedrooms , each with private bath was welcomed by everyone

kitchen had everything for cooking a complete meal/ can walk to restaurants if you choose

washing machine a bonus

watch out for a couple of low doorways

garage too small for most rental cars

A really beautiful cottage in charming location

We were six adults spending a weekend together and it was an ideal set-up. There was plenty of room, the cottage is extremely comfortable and with pleasing interior furnishing and decor. Shirley was prompt and helpful in organising the visit. If we'd have had time, we would have liked to explore the village pubs more, but in the end, we preferred to stay put in the evenings. We had a lovely walk along a 5 mile loop of footpaths on our last day.

Tall guests may have some difficulty getting used to the low doorways on the ground floor. The kitchen could do with a few extra utensils (eg sharp knives, good-sized caserole, a few more plates etc to avoid setting off the dishwasher after each meal). Otherwise, it is hard to find fault with this little gem.

Special interest holidays:

Badminton 10 minutes. Dyrham Park 15 minutes.

Within approximately 30 minutes are the City of Bath, Box, Bradford on Avon, Bristol, Corsham,Chipping Sodbury, Cirencester, Lacock, Malmesbury, Tetbury, Westonbirt

All within 50 minutes Bowood, Longleat, Avebury, Stonehenge, Marlborough, Westbury White Horse, Salisbury.

Opposite the property is the entrance to The Manor House in and its Michelin starred restaurant and Whately Manor is also within easy reach with its fine restaurants.

For entertainment the historic City of Bath can be reached is just 25 minutes by car. There are many fine historic buildings and museums to visit as well as a varied selection of shops. In Porch House there is a book for visitors with useful information on what to do in Castle-Combe and the surrounding area.


Castle-Combe has good access to the surrounding Cotswolds and to Bath. It is located just 15 minutes off the M4 and 25 minutes from Bath.


Bath approx 14 miles, Chippenham 6 miles, Bristol 20 miles.
