About the property

2 charming houses and grounds

Situated at the foot of the historic fortress of La Cite, known as Carcassonne Castle, we have restored a medieval farm. It opens on three streets and has two separate architect-designed properties to rent: the two-storey Farmhouse; and the single-storey Guest House.

At the centre, is a large landscaped garden offering spectacular views of the castle, especially in the evenings when the ramparts are illuminated year-round. The garden has a pool surrounded by a wooden deck, with trees, an ancient well, two stone-paved terraces, and also provides parking off-street behind tall metal gates from Rue Barbacane.

The Farmhouse on Rue Longue is a modernised two-storey 18th century property, with 2 bedrooms on the first floor, a large open-plan living floor, a private rear tree-shaded courtyard off the kitchen/ dining, and is let with the heated pool which is set in a large deck area shaded by a giant fig tree.

The Guest House on Traverse Rue Longue is a charming one storey property converted from the old stable building, with a large double bedroom and other rooms with fold-out sofa-beds. It also has its own south facing courtyard.

We are just around the corner from where Kate Mosse wrote her inspiring historical trilogy set in Carcassonne and the surrounding cathar country (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kate_Mosse#Early_writing_and_the_Languedoc_Trilogy)

Located at the foot of the Medieval Cité in the historic Barbacane quarter, our house is ideally placed in walking distance both from the old and new towns of Carcassonne; local bakers/grocers are even nearer, as is the Aude river. It’s a pleasant stroll over le Pont Vieux, the historic stone bridge with dramatic views of the ramparts and the Pyrennees in the distance, to the excellent market held in the central square, Place Carnot, three days a week.

Two Michelin star restaurants are a few minutes walk from the house, Carcassonne golf course 10 minutes drive, similarly Lac de Cavayere with beaches and many outdoor activities (including a local version of GoApe), excellent for children.

Toulouse is under an hour (car or train), Narbonne and Mediterranean beaches just over an hour in the other direction.

It's an area with wonderful walks, scenery, cathar castles, Minervois, Corbiere and La Clape wines.

Our property is looked after by our local french gardian Pierre who will welcome you and deal with any problems (and who also speaks Catalan) and his wife Chantal who takes care of cleaning and making sure the house is comfortable for your stay.

In this quiet village-in-town neighbourhood, the house is suprisingly secluded, private and hidden away in this romantic location right under the castle. The property is part of our larger garden (which contains the parking) onto which opens our own 2-storey 2 bed house with swimming pool; when we are not there, the whole may be rented or alternatively the pool also could be rented as an add-on (to the one-storey house as advertised). The owners are happy to discuss availability of any of these other options.

Lovely Well equipped houses, great location, had a wonderful holiday, would highly recommend

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five - four adults and one child really enjoyed our 12 nights in carcassonne. The houses were both lovely and well equipped. Our older children stayed in the studio and ourselves and our younger child in the farmhouse. The houses offer the best of both worlds - they are a lovely ten minute walk from the city and just below the magnificent castle - you can spend lazy days by the pool or enjoy exploring the city and castle. The garden and pool are beautiful with plenty of shaded areas to sit and read if the sun gets too hot. Both houses also have private courtyards which is ideal if travelling with another family. Pierre and Chantal who look after the property are really nice and despite their lack of English and my book learned French we managed to communicate quite well. We really enjoyed our holiday in this beautiful part of France which is largely undiscovered. There are plenty of restaurants and patisserie's on the nearby Rue Trivalle so if you don't want to cook or barbecue at the house you have a great choice of places to eat. The houses are about 7km from the airport - we hired a car but being so near the city and airport you could manage without one. The owners Robert & Chantal are very easy to deal with and answered all our questions making booking very easy. We highly recommend this property and hope to return again one day .

Well placed but unwelcoming.

  • 3 of 5

Apart from its position close to the old city this property had little to recommend it, being devoid of any character or homely touches, however it was clean and well equipped. The 'house' appears to be a converted outbuilding and the whole place smelled of, and was, damp - especially the bedroom (inc bed and bed linen) and bathroom. There is inadequate lighting in the bathroom made more noticeable by it having the only mirror in the whole house. The french doors didn't close properly and therefore wouldn't lock so we had to leave the shutter down for security, which made the very dark house even darker. The garden has a great view of the city walls one side but contains a derelict building site on the other. Oh! and the neighbour opposite mends, and has friends with, motorbikes so it gets noisy at times.

All in all a well placed and equipped but unwelcoming house.

Owner's Response: Hello Karen Thank you for your review and comments. Oh dear! we are most sorry you found it unwelcoming. It's not the house we live in year round, true, so it's not as soft and homely as it would be if you were staying in someone's own home. But we have put up original paintings, there are rugs, and there's a new log stove that gives out amazing heat very quickly, as well as electric radiators in all rooms. There are 2 sets of lights in the bathroom - 3 spots overhead, as well as a pair of halogens built in to the generous cabinet and mirror over the sink - perhaps you didn't find the swittch for these which we grant you could be confusing as it's 2-way with the switch outside in the Hall. We've not had a complaint before about the Guest House being damp. We think you had a lot of rain around the time you were there, and also wonder whether a window or door had been left open inadvertently. The sliding glass doors are modern alumininium with a lever lock in the shut position but maybe you were unable to make this work. Either way, we will ask our friendly 'gardiens' Pierre & Chantal to check the linen and the whole place generally, particularly if rain has got in somewhere. We will run a dehumidifier, particularly as you say in the rear bedrooom to make sure it is fully dry. Lastly, the neighbours. There are only a few people living in the street and they are not particularly well-off, but we've not had a problem with the neighbours opposite so it sounds as though it was a one-off, which is most unlucky for you. Fortunately the sleeping areas are all at the back and away from the street. Thank you again for your thoughts which are useful and will be acted upon.

A lovely holiday in a lovely house in a lovely location.

  • 5 of 5

Having been to Carcassonne before we knew what to expect from the town and Cite and hoped that the location of the two houses we rented from Robert and Lucinda would be as good as the photos suggested and indeed they were. As other reviewers have already mentioned the houses are located less than 100 metres from the walls of the old Cite with steps and a path to the Cite's rear entrance being only a minute or so's walk away. The houses are well equipped and very comfortable, yet typically French in certain respects. With the temperature on the outside reaching the mid 30's the insides remained cool and comfortable during our stay. The pool is perfect for family use and once inside the remote gates with easy parking you feel safe, secure and still yet in the middle of things. We spoke very poor French and yet we managed to understand (in the main) the information provided by the owners two very pleasant house keepers, Pierre and Chantel. The couple of queries we had during our stay that we were unable to address with Pierre and Chantel were dealt with by Robert within an extremely short period of time and his attention and desire to ensure we enjoyed our stay was clearly the most important issue for him. There are too many good restaurants to recommend one in particular but if you wish to visit a little further afield a trip to the Lac, Lagrasse and even the Mediterranean Coast are well worth doing. Thank you Robert and Lucinda for letting us borrow your home and I was even tempted to leave a bad review to try and ensure that there might be vacancies when we try to rebook in the future. All the best Guy, Julie and family.

Great spot for a city break

  • 5 of 5

Perfect spot for a city break. Sitting a few minutes walk from the medieval city, and a few minutes walk from the river and the main city, this is in a perfect location.

The accommodation is modern and well equipped. Great log burner for the evenings, and plenty of towels and blankets provided. Chantalle was extremely helpful, and lovely. It was really nice to have such a lovely garden area to sit out in and read our books, looking at the wild flowers and views of the castle. Plenty of good places to eat a short walk away. We will be returning. Fabulous!

Good clean property, well located.

  • 5 of 5

Booking process and info very easily attained. Very close to the rear entrance to the castle and to the airport bus stop. Lovely river and country walks close by and easy to get into the new city over the bridge. Some shops and restaurants close by although only open Fri and Sat out of season. Property was clean and spacious with lots of extra bedding and towels if needed. The small courtyard at the rear with table and chairs was lovely for reading and coffee when the sun shone. Everything that we needed was there. Excellent property.

About robert dye & lucinda montefiore

I'm an architect, my wife Lucinda is a radio producer, we have 3 boys aged 11 to 23.

robert dye & lucinda montefiore purchased this house in 2001

Why robert dye & lucinda montefiore chose Carcassonne

We fell in love with Carcassonne on our way to the Costa Brava when visiting friends at the foot of La Cite in late July 20 years ago.

There was music floating down from this amazing castle as we got out of our car, and over 3 days we had a magical visit - lakes, Canal du Midi, market in the main square, historic villages and ruined Cathar castles - we couldn't believe we didn't know about this wonderful area of France.

We heard form our friends that by chance a derelict farm was available at the foot of La Cite and we ended up buying it 14 years ago.

The land it's on opens onto 3 different streets.

It's been a gradual process of restoration and conversion: farm house, pool and large decking surround, gravel garden, guest house, and we are still working on the historic barn - one day it'll make a third house we hope.

We have loved coming here for family holidays and romantic weekends every year and still are finding new things to do, places to see.

And of course the Carcassonne festival highlightis the incredible firework display on 14th July. What better place to sit and eat supper in the courtyard on our terrace looking up at the castle walls!

This spring/summer we have cleared and renovated around the ancient well to make another garden sitting area, and planted two (150 year-old) olive trees and 3 cypresses.

What makes this house unique

Off street parking inside a large gravel-garden giving access to 2 charming, private 1 and 2-storey houses. The overall property opens onto 3 different streets.

The 2 bedroom 2-storey Farm House opens onto Rue Longue and has its own rear courtyard with a large shady myrtle-plane tree.

The 1-storey Guest House opens onto Traverse Rue Longue. It is a flexible unit that can sleep from 2 to 5 people, but with only one double bedroom. It has its own private gravel courtyard / deck that links from the main garden / parking to the back door.

The heated swimming pool (4 x 8m, with motorised pool-cover) is surrounded by a huge hardwood deck under a spreading, shady fig tree. This is all raised 2 steps above the large shared gravel garden and paved terraces.

The pool is near the back door of the Farm House, so is rented only with the Farm House, with exclusive use of the guests staying there. We open the pool between May and September.

We have a number of friends and returning guests who rent both houses, gardens and pool as one large shared unit.

Regrettably, we are not a 'gite' so cannot let the pool to different clients sharing the garden (unless you are booking together).

There are 2 paved terraces beside the gravel parking with fantastic views up to the Ramparts, which are flood-lit at night.

Our garden and grounds are unusually large for a property in the middle of such a dense old 'quarter'. This came about because it's a renovated farm and we've decided not to build more - we love the outside so much.

The garden has one of the oldest wells in the area, and a stone barn (as yet unrenovated) dating back before the 16th century.

The main garden is entered from Rue Barbacane through tall motorised double gates, giving secuirty and privacy.

Car: not necessary

You are in the centre of one of France's most rich and diverse cultural and tourist areas, all accessible by car, and with a good train network (inc. TGV), to find the following - history (particularly the Cathars, try various ruined castles, Peyrepeteuse, Lastours-Cabaret, Montségur, and Romans, try LaGrasse, Limoux); wine (Minervois, Cabardes, Corbiere, our favourite La Clape); nature and walking (Black Mountains, Pyrenees, and their lakes, regional nature parks); skiing (France, Spain, Andorra), Toulouse has a wonderful historic city centre packed with shops, restaurants, culture; mediterranean seaside towns and beaches (Cape d'Agde, Perpignan, Narbonne Plage, Gruissan, Leucate, Collioure, to name some favourites!); cycling (Canal du Midi, and the Tour de France comes into town most years!); fresh and seawater fishing; a beautiful golf course at Domaine d'Auriac minutes from our poroperty. The main square has an open air market 3 times a week, particularly on Saturday, and is a 10 minute walk from our property either over the Pont Vieux or across the causeway - both are picturesque walks with differing views of the Castle.
