About the property

Villa with stunning views on the edge of Ste Anastasie sur Issole

L'Hirondelle is a spacious Provençal villa located on the outskirts of the charming village of Ste-Anastasie-sur-Issole in the VAR region of Provence. Ste Anastasie is set in a wide valley of vineyards along the lovely Issole river. The villa has the extra advantage of being only 30 minutes away from the beaches of Hyeres, the rest of the French Riveria only a bit further....

The villa sleeps eight people in four bedrooms and has a beautiful new pool, which offers wonderful views over the countryside.

The property is particularly well laid-out for large parties, as the sleeping areas are located in two separate wings on either side of the large main living areas. Each 'wing' consists of two double bedrooms as well as a bathroom with toilet and a separate WC. The east wing has one twin-bedded room and one double-bedded room as well as a bathroom with shower and bath. The west wing has two double-bedded bedrooms and a bathroom with shower.

The central part of the house has the kitchen, newly renovated to a very high standard, including an American style fridge/freezer. There is also a lounge with comfortable seating and a mezzanine area above it. In addition a large dining area and an enclosed veranda both offer table space for dining.

There are also several areas for eating outside as well as a gas barbecue. There is a table just outside the dining room, the west wing has its own raised terrace next to the bedrooms and there is a shaded ‘pool house’ next to the pool with dining capacity for 8 people.

The pool is located behind the house on an elevated level – which allows for the wonderful views! A new pool, it measures 8.5 meters x 4.5 meters. There are three steps entering the pool in the shallow area, where the depth of the pool starts at 1 meter and continues to the deep area with a depth of 2 meters. There is a spacious covered area next to the pool with space for sun loungers, a dining table and a small refrigerator.

The house is conveniently located just a five minute walk from the village centre, where there is a baker, restaurant, café, post office and tabac.

There is a small tourist train which runs across the road from the front of the house during the summer season, usually on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from Carnoules to Brignoles in the morning around 10 and then again in the mid/late afternoon.

There is parking on the property for one or two cars.

Lovely Ste Anastasie

  • 5 of 5

Just back from a gorgeous week in L'Hirondelle. Really recommend this delightful house in the pretty village of Ste Anastasie sur Issole. We found everything we needed for a spring break in this well equipped home including heating for chilly spring evenings, though sometimes we were able to sit by the pool until quite late with a glass of wine, watching the sun set over the hillsides. We explored a new region and found lovely beaches, beautiful countryside, dramatic gorges and perched villages, and always came back to a cosy house. We loved everything here - small restaurants in the village, supermarkets only a short drive away - couldn't really fault it.

Perfect retreat

  • 5 of 5

L’Hirondelle provides home from home comfort. We loved the mix of traditional Provencal décor with the up-to-date well-equipped kitchen (the ice dispensing fridge was a godsend when we were there in mid-July and temperatures soared) and excellent bathrooms. The pool is superb with stunning views over the surrounding countryside and spectacular sunsets. Nothing overlooks the property so you have complete privacy. We particularly liked the fact that the property is located off the usual tourist trail so you don’t have to meet hordes of holidaymakers unless you drive down to the popular coastal resorts (you can be in St Tropez in about 50 minutes), St Anastasie is quaint and there are many other charming villages just a few minutes drive away. The nearest town, Brignoles (15 minutes drive), is well worth exploring - the old town has lots of character and hidden architectural gems. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely book this property again.

Heavenly escape

L’ Hirondelle, Ste Anastasie, Var, France - review

If you are longing for somewhere to escape the dismal English winter, L’ Hirondelle, in the small hamlet of Sainte Anastasie, is just such a hideaway.

Even in January, the weather in the Var region of southern France, can be warm, bright and sunny.

The house has plenty of rooms delightfully arranged on different levels, with a log fire in the lounge and large tables in both dining rooms for meals - or for work.

There is something about sitting at that table looking out across the landscape (with a glass of local wine) that is both inspiring and restful. Thinking can be done at a gentle pace and restless thoughts taken on a leisurely walk to the local boulangerie.

The kitchen is fully equipped and easy to use. The bedrooms are cosy and there is a large new bathroom. There is also the bonus of a small dressing room with enough space to stow all your cases and clothes, so you can keep the living areas clear of any travel “clutter”.

The garden and swimming pool area is secluded – with a variety of views from sunrise to sunset. There are many different walks to choose from including a spectacular mini -trek up a wooded escarpment to a tiny church at the top. The panorama is unbeatable.

If you wish to go further afield you can drive through the vine-growing countryside to beautiful little villages with potteries and galleries - or you can go to Marseilles for a perfect bouillabaisse or even further to Montpelier, which has to be the most beautiful city in France. If you do drive that far, book lunch at Jardin des Senses - a taste experience ‘sans pareil’.

From Ste Anastasie, it is just a short drive to supermarkets or the fabulous vegetable and local produce markets in Brignoles, or you can easily drive along the coast to Frejus, Antibes, Cannes or Le Lavendou.

The good thing about winter holidays in that part of France is that there is hardly any traffic, so you can always find great places to eat, explore or shop - without the jostling summer crowds.

Our blissfully relaxing stay in Provence

  • 5 of 5

My wife, Kate, and I had just seven days (6th – 12th July) to devote to this year’s summer holiday and took on the 700 mile, 11 hour drive from Dunkirk to Sainte Anastasie in one go. We arrived, exhausted, at 2am, but it took just half a day to recharge our batteries thanks to the restorative powers of L’Hirondelle.

The house, which is deceptively big and has four bedrooms and a couple of newly and beautifully fitted bathrooms is tucked away along a quiet road at the edge of this pretty and unspoiled village. Ste A is about an hour’s drive from Marseille and a great base for exploring the Côte d'Azur.

We had a couple of outings but ultimately found the pool just a little too tempting. It’s at the back of the house, surrounded by green oak trees and pines and in an elevated position which gives a lovely view back across the village and the outlying hills.

There’s a boulangerie about ten minutes’ walk away and a handful of bars and restaurants. A couple of large supermarkets are within five miles so whilst it’s off the beaten track it’s easy to stock up on provisions. The local vineyards are also well worth a visit.

I have plenty of holiday miles under my belt but can’t think of anywhere I’d rather have been than here. The only downside was that we had to come home at the end of the week…
