About this property

6 Secluded Acres/Hot Tub/Fire Pit/Wood Fireplace/Pool Table/Hammock/Pets OK

Please visit us at 'A World Apart Rentals'. If you see our property listed on ANY other website (i.e. ends in 'list') be aware of fraud & scams!

“A World Apart” is not your typical bare provisioned rental cabin locked away in a subdivision overlooking more houses than views. Its location was selected and the home painstakingly built by our family to take advantage of the best of Maggie Valley and Western North Carolina. The care and attention to detail is visible throughout.

NOTE: Our home is located at 4000' elevation in the mountains and would NOT be easily accessible by motorcycle. The last 1/4 mile to the cabin is a single lane, gravel/dirt road that does a couple of switchbacks. Four wheel drive is HIGHLY recommended especially in the wintertime but typically a two wheel drive/front wheel drive vehicle is sufficient. Even though our property has plenty of parking and room for cars, trucks and trailers, riding by motorcycle will be up to the comfort level of the rider. The road leading to our property is made up of dirt/gravel and may not be suitable for every rider.

Nestled on 6 secluded acres of Soco Mountain, our home offers a Romantic Oasis for Couples or the perfect Retreat for Families. Relax on the Wrap-Around Porch and unwind while enjoying the scenery and listening to the persistent harmony of the Creek winding through the valley below. If you’re still and quiet, some of the neighborhood hummingbirds might visit and perhaps even an owl or two will announce the arrival of dusk.

The downstairs of our home features a magnificent Stone Fireplace towering over the living room, Satellite HDTV with DVD, broad-plank hardwood floors, sofa & loveseat, slate bathroom with Antique Claw-Foot Tub and walk-in shower. The Queen Bedroom features a large armoire, Satellite TV/DVD/VCR, and its own door leading to the hot tub. A fully-equipped and well-stocked kitchen with slate countertops and peninsula bar in addition to the dining table for six offers plenty of seating and amenities for your family gathering. Screen doors and windows allow for Mother Nature's ventilation and the sounds of the wilderness without being visited by it.

Upstairs the loft features a pool table and French Doors that open onto a Covered Porch complete with a hammock. In the Master Suite, unwind in the slate-surround Jacuzzi Tub while gazing out at the mountainside or enjoying the soothing embers of the electric fireplace. HDTV with DVD invites you to just lounge in the pillow-top King Bed watching a movie. The French Doors from the Master open onto a Large Private Balcony that is the perfect place to enjoy the morning’s first cup of coffee.

For those who still feel the need to keep in touch with the outside world, free wireless internet is provided. Please note that this service is wireless only so you'll have to have a wireless enabled computer to use the free service.

Wrap-around porches complete with rockers, swings, Adirondack chairs, charcoal grill and (our family’s favorite) a secluded hot tub for 6 are really why you vacation in the mountains. The upstairs Tin-Roofed Porch plays an unforgettably soothing melody on drizzly afternoons.

On adventuresome days, you’re a short walk to cascading waterfalls and only a few minutes drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Ghost Town in the Sky, the Cataloochee Ski Resort, Cherokee and Harrah’s Casino. A late afternoon trek to see the Elk in Cataloochee Valley is a must do and in little more than 30 minutes you can be enjoying the Biltmore Estate in Asheville or the Great Smokey Mountain Railroad in Bryson City.

We welcome you to be our guests and find out what makes our home 'A World Apart!' However, don't just take our word for it. Our previous guests comments are the best editorial of what you can expect.

Lovely cabin!
My family and I enjoyed our stay at this quiet and secluded cabin. The wood-burning fireplace was great, but the chimney may need cleaning as the entire cabin smelled smoky. There is also a problem with mice. We found a dead mouse in the kitchen/den upon arrival and saw another mouse/mice in the den a few times during our stay. There is a gap between the fireplace and the exterior wall that had aluminum foil wedged in place to seal it off, but it did not prevent the mouse/mice from slipping in and out. I understand that when there are woods, there are critters. Other than that, we really enjoyed the cabin.

Look forward to returning again soon
We honeymooned here 5 years ago. Returning had been on our list ever since. Exactly what we needed at this point with all the chaos going on in the world. Look forward to returning again soon!

Housekeeping could be better
Dirty dishes and silverware. Dusty and dirty floors. We had to wash all the dishes before we began cooking.

Our stay
Property was beautiful but foliage was overgrown. Bed appeared slept in and dirty on arrival and towels had stains on them. No robes were provided as mentioned. Dryer door didn’t open without prying with a knife. Hot tub maint. gentleman visited because he didn’t know we were there. Couldn’t get contact with property manager until day of trip but was very helpful once we made contact. Overall a positive experience but the property could use some TLC

I've had a love for the Smokies throughout my life. Annual retreats to their splendor, beauty, and peace have been a part of my life since I was a small child. When I need a reprieve from the sometimes hectic 'normal' life that I head to the bosom of these old mountains. Just one breath of cool, crisp morning air seems to put everything back in its proper place. I hope you too can find a little of that mountain magic. --Brien, Charlotte, NC

Why they chose this property

The name “A World Apart” came quite easily standing on the porch one early evening. After your visit I hope you’ll understand why...
The land on which A World Apart sits has been in the family for a few decades. The cabin was started in 1985 and was literally built board by board by one person. It was a quiet retreat and went through numerous design changes and additions, but the interior was never completed (some would say it was never started). With its lack of insulation, few exposed frame walls, and roughed in plumbing and electrical, it was a fun place for getaways where no one could find you.
In 2006, after many years of the cabin sitting desolate, I purchased the property. That set off a two year adventure of weekly drives to the property, more Lowes trips than I ever thought possible, and a frustrating and painstakingly slow yet rewarding process of reworking and completing the interior of the cabin and bringing it up to current building code. The majority of the work was done by my family including all the framing, electrical, heating and air, insulation, cabinetry, tile work, flooring and stairs (which was milled from red oak trees from my primary house), and too many other details to recall them all. It was a labor of love that nearly broke me in so many ways.
We tried to pull from the best of the cabins we had visited around the Smokies and at the same time, add a little of our own flair and style. I am quite pleased with the result and have been rewarded by the many kind words and stories from guests.

What makes this property unique

It’s all about location! The cabin sits just a few minutes West of Maggie Valley and Cataloochee Ski Resort. The Blue Ridge Parkway runs along the back side of the mountain. Even being so close to these amenities it feels as though you are on a quiet hiking trail in the middle of the Park. The 5.5 acres is surrounded on all sides by vacant properties so that there is literally no other sign of civilization within your view. The only sounds are the wind through the trees, the creek running through the hollow below, and nature living the way it was intended.
