About the property

Cartmel Manse is situated in South Lakeland, a mile from medieval Cartmel with its 12th century Priory and famous racecourse, and a mile-and-a-half from popular Victorian seaside resort Grange-over-Sands. England’s longest lake, Lake Windermere, lies six miles north, about 10 minute's drive. One well-behaved pet is welcome by request (minimum 12 months old).

The property has breathtaking, uninterrupted views over fields to Humphrey Head and the sea of Morecambe Bay. The view changes constantly as each day progresses, and was designed as an ‘upside-down’ house to take advantage of the view.Indoors, the cottage is new and contemporary with a bright, airy, open-plan living space on the first floor. The ground floor comprises two bedrooms and shower room. There's also a cloakroom with a second wc. The master bedroom takes advantage of the view and has French doors opening onto the garden patio. The house is south-facing so the patio is perfect for watching the sun set. The location is quiet and peaceful.

The property sleeps up to four in a double bedded room and the larger, ‘garden bedroom’ sleeps two either in twin beds or a superking bed configuration. Children of seven years and older are very welcome. One pet by request.

All gas, electricity, bed linen and towels are included. There is a dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, fridge and freezer. Free Wi-fi available (but please be aware that I cannot guarantee a permanent connection in this rural location). Post office/shop and pub are within a few minute’s walk here in Allithwaite.

Outside there's a large, enclosed garden with patio furniture and charcoal BBQ provided. Off road parking for one car with further roadside parking available.

Offering stunning views of the South Lakeland District fells and countryside, Cartmel is easily accessible being just under one mile away. A thoroughly charming village with its winding streets, pretty cottages, whitewashed houses and medieval buildings leading to the village square. The village offers visitors many modern surprises in the form of fine quality attractions, shops, cafes and eateries. Cartmel proudly houses no less than four pubs, all serving food seven days per week. Around the village square the assortment of 16th - 18th century buildings includes two of the four friendly inns, well stocked shops and private dwellings.

Two Michelin-starred, award-winning gastronomic restaurant 'L'Enclume', plus Simon Rogan's sister restaurant 'Rogan's' are situated in Cartmel's picturesque heart.

Occupying one of the most attractive spots in the area, Grange-over-Sands looks out across the expansive sands of Morecambe Bay, a rich feeding ground for many species of birds which take advantage of the gentle climate in the area. Grange is unique in this area as it’s a town built by the Victorians for their holidays when the railway came. There is a wonderful Promenade to stroll along and admire places across Morecambe Bay such as Arnside and Silverdale. Heavenly cafes abound, including The Hazelmere Cafe and Bakery, trading as a cafe since 1897 and winners of The Tea Guild's Top Tea Place every year since 2006.

Hi, I'm a hotelier with over thirty year's experience. A great many of the years have been spent in the beautiful Lake District, where I currently co-own a 16th century Inn. I think that I have a good idea of what people are looking for in a holiday, and I'm good at ensuring their expectations are met. I gain much satisfaction from making sure that my guests are happy with their home-from-home accommodation.

Why Clare chose England

The Lake District is only a few minutes' drive away, in all its majesty. Personally, however, I revel in the contrast between spending days amongst the magnificent fells and valleys there, then returning to the sense of space, big skies and open views of the coast here at Cartmel Manse.

What makes this house unique

Nature, history, fabulous views and peaceful quietness are just a few of the qualities that make the Cartmel and Grange area a delight to spend time exploring. The area is milder and drier than further north amongst the Lakeland Fells.

Thank you for a lovely holiday

Clare made us very welcome along with our dog. The house is lovely, with great views too. Garden very well kept and it is well placed for visiting the coast and inland lake areas. Local people friendly and the nearby children's playground was a bonus for our son. Beautifully furnished house. The local pub (The Pheasant) has lovely friendly staff and does really good meals.

Fantastic House - a real home from home!

We have just returned from a 2 week stay at Cartmel Manse and cannot speak highly enough about it. The house is excellent with great facilities and the "upside down" layout is great - the view from the upstairs lounge over the garden and fields to the sea and distant opposite shore is amazing. The lounge and kitchen upstairs are great and the 2 bedrooms downstairs and the bathroom are very smart and comfortable and very well kitted out.

The house is a great base to explore the beauty of the lake district which is stunning. We were out everyday and did something and went somewhere different every day. There are many local pubs within walking distance and everywhere we went was very dog friendly.

Clare, the owner has done a great job with this property and she is a wonderful host - very conscientious and attentive without being the least bit intrusive - she was very happy for us and our dog barney to use and share her garden with her and her lovely dog, Megan.

We will be recommending Cartmel Manse to all of our friends and relatives planning a trip to the Lake District and we cannot wait to go back again ourselves - we really did have the most wonderful, relaxing holiday.

Lovely Getaway

My husband and I stayed at Cartmel Manse for a couple of nights in March and I would recommend it without hesitation. The house is extremely comfortable, well-equipped and immaculately clean. The upside-down layout makes the most of the incredible view; you can relax in the lounge looking out over the countryside with the sea in the distance. We were even lucky enough to have the most adorable little lambs running around in the field behind the house! Clare, the owner, is extremely welcoming and helpful without ever being intrusive. And as for location, it is within easy distance of the Lake District National Park where the scenery is so completely stunning that I can safely say we plan to return and we certainly plan to stay at Cartmel Manse again!

Great place, lovely host, fantastic getaway.

Cartmel Manse is the ideal base for a stay in the Lake District. It's a short distance south of Lake Windermere, the largest lake. Clare is a lovely, welcoming host who made our stay at her house very comfortable. The house is very nicely presented with good sized rooms. It's well decorated with a contemporary, fresh feel and a nice comfy bed. The living-room has amazing views from the French doors.

We couldn't have wanted any more from our stay. The place is clean, tidy, fresh, well presented, well equipped and within a short distance from anywhere you'd want to visit at a reasonable price. We would definitely stay here again.

Owner's Response: Lauren and Jonathan had the attitude of 'leaving the place as we found it'. And they did! Such a treat to find that level of personal pride in a young couple. They were respectful of the house and altogether a pleasure to have as guests. I very much hope that they'll return :-). It's extremely important to me to keep the cottage clean and smart. I always clean it with the aim of making it look like the next guests feel they're the first ever occupants. So I especially appreciate guests who look after the place during their stay. Damage Deposit £100

Payment of damage deposit (refundable) is best in the form of a cheque on arrival. After departure, once I have cleaned and checked that no damage has occurred I shred the deposit cheque. However, this arrangement is flexible to suit both parties. Please note that you are required to leave the property in a similar state of cleanliness as found eg. bins emptied into outside bins, everything properly cleaned and put away in the kitchen. If extra cleaning is required eg. dirty grill pan, baking trays, pans, the additional time required to clean will be deducted from the damage deposit.
