Character farmhouse with magnificent views and large private pool near Aubeterre

Le Tilleul is a spacious Charentais farmhouse set in a small hamlet in south west France, near Chalais and Aubeterre sur Dronne, on the border of the Dordogne and Charente (the 2nd sunniest department of France). Comfortable, modernised and furnished to a high standard, this self catering house sleeps 8 plus a baby, in 4 attractive bedrooms with an additional sofa bed in the living room.
The grounds include a large private 12x6m swimming pool with Roman steps and a deep end and two pool terraces offering space for loungers, tables, ice coolers, parasols and reclining chairs. The pretty landscaped garden provides a range of dining areas in sun and shade and a beautiful wild flower meadow, plus wonderful open views over rolling countryside to distant farms.
Inside, the impressive double height living room is arranged into 4 areas for reading, dining, relaxing overlooking the garden and watching TV. The Smart 40” HD TV has both satellite and internet channels including free Netflix and YouTube. The farmhouse kitchen is sympathetically updated with modern fitted units, a dining table, range cooker, dishwasher, storage and a log burner. Beyond the kitchen the utility room houses the washing machine, 2 microwaves and 2 fridge freezers.
The tastefully furnished ground floor bedroom opens directly into the garden. It contains a five foot double oak bed and matching furniture, and the ensuite private shower room also contains a loo and basin.
The three generous upstairs bedrooms are all individually styled with views over the garden and/or pool to the rolling countryside beyond. All are newly decorated and furnished. Each sleeps 2 in a combination of double, and king-size/twin options. An additional 3 foot single bed is available for a child wishing to share a room with others. 1 upstairs bedroom is fully ensuite while the other two have bath and/or shower/wash basin facilities and share a first floor toilet. A cot is provided. Guests must, however provide their own cot linen.
The location is peaceful and unhurried, surrounded by woodland and fields. Beautiful country walks may be enjoyed directly from the door.
Chalais, the nearest town, is just 4kms away and holds a bustling weekly market. Heretooyou will find a railway station with direct trains to Bordeaux and Angouleme, linking to the TGV, and a good selection of shops and services including an Intermarché supermarket, excellent boulangeries and boucheries, petrol station, banks, car wash, restaurants, bars and tea rooms.
Eating out on Market Day is a treat with a variety of stalls selling hot and cold food, from home-made sweets to spit-roasted chickens. Le Bonne Humeur bar and restaurant occupies prime position in the centre of town where tables and chairs in the square offer shade from the sun in a pleasant location for whiling away time over coffee or drinks. Lovely property other than the hot water system not working in the evenings throughout the stay
When I politely suggested to the owner that a reasonable refund was due because the failing hot water system was not working properly I received an offensive reply. This was full of false accusations regarding the state the house was left ( we left it in an entirely reasonable state). This included a statement that we had urinated in the shower ! We were a family party of three professional adult couples. Furthermore money was docked from our deposit for extra cleaning. Quite extraordinary behaviour, and I have received no reply to my letter to them complaining of the way they treated us. By the way, I wrote to Homeaway at least a week ago about this situation and have heard nothing from them either. All rather disappointing.

Fantastic Holiday At Le Tilleul
We had a wonderful stay in this beautiful house. Our one-year-old daughter absolutely loved running around the huge garden and splashing about in the enormous pool (a welcome change from our small, London flat). The house is set in charming countryside, and there are several walking routes that take you through fields (full of sunflowers in summer) and woods, which really enabled us to make the most of the superb location. Chalais and Aubeterre, which both have plenty of shops, cafes, and restaurants, are both a short drive away. Chalais also has a railway station from where you can easily get to Bordeaux or Angouleme in about an hour. The house itself was very well appointed, extremely comfortable, and has clearly been decorated with real care and attention - it feels like a home from home. We enjoyed our stay so much that we have already booked to go back this October! We would recommend it to anyone.

A Gem in the Charente. Calm, comfortable spacious.
All was just as the owners described while they added still more quality and detail. Their local reps. were just as friendly and helpful, looking after the pool and helping to source anything needed, as well as suggesting the best shops and restaurants. Rooms are big and full of character, with massive storage, and the kitchen and lounge are exceptional. TV, telephone and WI. Fi. all work well. I enjoyed walking through the farmlands with their sunflowers, and varied bird life, plus further on, vines, whilst the restaurants in Chalais were good and friendly, using English whenever I needed it. There are more places to visit than I can mention, though I especially enjoyed Cognac - a lively town with excellent public gardens, museums and walks, or boats on the river Charente. I strongly recommend Le Tilleul and its area for all their varied delights, including the occasional call of a distant donkey. I shall come again.

About the host

We live in the south east of England and, until recently, ran our own holiday cottage company. This has given us an in-depth understanding of the property rental business and how to equip a house for an enjoyable self catering experience. We are delighted to have been fortunate enough to own our own beautiful farmhouse in south west France, as a holiday home, and wish for others to enjoy its unique, relaxing atmosphere and spacious, character accommodation.

Why they chose this property

Our search for a holiday home in the Dordogne and Charente led us to this tranquil spot where we immediately felt relaxed and at home. The open country views across the fields to the Double Forest and the wonderful flora and fauna captured our imagination. We very much enjoy staying in a country setting whilst having the facilities of a thriving market town nearby.

What makes this property unique

The 12 x 6 meter pool and sun terraces with beautiful country views set in an attractive landscaped garden and wild flower meadow makes Le Tilleul an ideal holiday destination. The long sunny days and warm evenings encourage outdoor living for most of the year. A variety of local attractions include Aubeterre sur Dronne (one of the prettiest villages in France), the wine centres of Bordeaux, St Emillon and Cognac. Sunflower fields surround the property. The famous vineyards of Bergerac and Bordeaux nearby offer chateaux tours and wine tastings.
