Charming traditional private casa in rural area with large pool - stunning views

Updated: 14-Oct-2016
1 queen bedroom, 1 bath, 2 x dble sofa beds - sleeps 2/4 Quiet + great pool view

Traditional Portuguese casa in rural old style mountain village. Secluded and quiet the main features are the magnificent views, peaceful garden and the large private pool. Comfortable and cosy, the casa offers all you need to relax whether you want to use it as a base whilst discovering the beauty and history of the area, or simply shop for wonderful local food and never leave the poolside view.

The casa is privately owned, set in it's own grounds and traditionally built, with high wooden ceilings, stone walls to keep it cool, and shutters for the hottest part of the day. There is a large lounge with double French doors opening onto the veranda overlooking the terraces, pool and that gorgeous mountain scenery. It has 2 double sofa beds, books and maps, TV and Wifi. The kitchen is fully equipped including cooker, microwave, fridge, coffee maker, toaster etc. We haven't forgotten the corkscrew or potato masher either! The dining table comfortably seats 4 and has Eqyptian linen tablecloths and napkins. There is also a functioning wood burner for the cool spring and autumnal evenings.

The bedroom has plenty of storage space and a queen sized bed and overlooks the large private courtyard with parking for four or more cars.

The bathroom has full sized basin, toilet and shower cubicle, plenty of storage and linen and towels (including pool towels) are provided.

Outside on the veranda is a table and chairs for sitting in the shade, and there are poolside beds for lying in the sun before a refreshing dip. The un-overlooked garden has some lawn, a small grape vineyard, a rock garden, magnolia, orange, olive, lemon, tangerine, plum and apple trees. There is nothing like getting up to a spectacular sunrise and picking your own oranges for sweet breakfast juice while the smell of freshly brewed coffee wafts onto the veranda!

It all sits high on the hillside and catches those cool breezes you need in those hot summer months. The casa has the traditional Portuguese-built BBQ where you can grill your local delicious lamb while sipping local wine or beer and looking out over those stunning views. Many species of butterflies can be seen, and birdsong is often the only sound in the garden.

About the Owner

We are a well travelled couple living in the UK who originally bought the casa as an investment - but we bought it with our hearts and not our heads and fell in love with Portugal, it's people and the unspoilt area. We have resisted renting out our well loved Portuguese home for almost 10 years, but with both of us working and a growing brood of grandchildren we are not able to get there as often as we would like. The casa and its beautiful setting has much to offer to everyone, and we felt it was selfish to keep it to ourselves. We hope all our visitors fall in love with it as we did!

Two weeks in September - What it says on the tin & more

Casa Marques is a charming holiday cottage nestling on a south facing hillside with uninterrupted views stretching as far as the eye can see over wooded hills and valleys. A large swimming pool with comfortable loungers is where we spent most of our days taking turns to climb the dozen steps to replenish glasses of gin and tonic with ice from the freezer and lemons and limes plucked from trees in the garden. Shopping presented no problem whatsoever there being a well stocked supermarket with helpful staff, including a butcher who advised us on the best choice for the barbecue, only a few miles away. We also topped up our provisions when stopping at our "local" minimarket/café for a coffee or beer. Here despite their English being on a par with our Portuguese we always came away with a smile and exactly what we needed!

The villa's purpose built barbecue we found invaluable being so easy to light and to cook on.

We found driving in this part of Portugal no bother at all with motorway access about 100metres from the airport, stretching to about 15 minutes to Marques itself and minor roads practically devoid of other users.

All in all a great holiday for chilling out and one that we wished we had stayed longer

Lovely rural retreat

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for our honeymoon after getting married near Torres Vedras. Really beautiful setting and very secluded for peace and quite. Really well situated from Lisbon and Porto - we were visiting family in Lisbon and it is roughly a 1h30 drive.

We popped to Tomar a few times during our stay which has a lovely selection of restaurants and sites to see. Nothing is within walking distance from the casa, but it's only a short drive to the local cafe which has quite an extensive mini-market attached, and Alvaiazere has everything you need really.

Quiet, well isolated from any neighbours or holiday makers place with really big swimming pool ...

  • 4 of 5

The casa is well equipped, has a good size rooms, and is nicely isolated from outer world. Big kitchen, fireplace, fridge and gas oven. Microwave, cattle and coffe-maker as promised in listing.

Good car is required, because the property sits on the hill, and you have to be prepared for stone covered roads. The pool is overlooking a huge valley, with olive trees and "cigales" singing all day. Private, shaded parking place, nice grill outside, two tarraces and outdoor shower by the pool.

We can recomend the place to visitors, who know where are they going. Portugal is a very specific country with superb friendly people, lots of things from the past to be seen and... very low prices for everyday goods, e.g. coffee...

Beautiful place

  • 5 of 5

We spent 4 nights in Porto and 10 nights in the casa. Perfect for relaxing after a city break. We felt so at home and didn't want to leave. The casa is well equipped and comfortable and although there is no air conditioning, we didn't find it necessary in temperatures reaching 38 degrees!!! The privacy around the pool and house is fabulous and gave us the feeling of isolation although there are in fact neighbours not too far away but you wouldn't know. We felt totally secure with the perimeter fence and gates. Idyllic place and happy to return which is unusual for me as there are sooooo many places in the world to visit

Charming Casa with Breathtaking Views

  • 5 of 5

A delightful retreat in a rural location, Casa Marques was everything we expected and more. From initial contact with the lovely owners through to being met on arrival, nothing was too much trouble. The photos of the views are good but in real life it is truly breathtaking. We visited in mid May and had mixed weather but took the opportunity on rainy days to visit some beautiful towns and villages within easy reach of the casa. The only negative...... we had to leave!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words Charlotte, we're so glad you enjoyed your stay at Casa Marques. As one of the very first couples to book a stay in the casa we are so relieved it lived up to your expectations. We're also glad you loved the views - they lift our spirits every time we go!

From the Owner

Peaceful, private and quiet, the stunning views and the large pool make it hard to leave this casa. We've probably seen less of the local area than many of our visitors as we usually spend our time sitting outside and just gazing at that view. The perfect antidote for stress, we eat, drink, swim and read for most of our stay, going for walks in the cool of the mornings and evenings. Going to bed after the sun sets, and getting up in the mornings to birdsong and fresh orange juice - why do we need to leave? Friends and family members agree with us - although there is a multitude of things to see in the immediate area, particularly if you like history, Casa Marques is a place to unwind, relax and enjoy nature at its most beautiful. Perhaps we are just boring old ..... people?

Marques is an unspoiled, sleepy village atop a hillside covered in old olive groves, orange trees, pines and eucalyptus, with tiny cobbled lanes where the grass grows due to lack of traffic. If you want to step back in time to the traditional Portuguese rural way of life then Marques is the perfect choice. It is set in beautiful, isolated and scarcely populated dry pine mountains ideal for walking, bird watching and cycling through untouched rural villages. Marques is close to 3 UNESCO World Heritage Sites - The Templar castle at Tomar, the Batalha Monastery near Leiria and the Cistercian Abbey of Santa Maria de Alcobaca near the coast at Nazare. The lovely river Zezere runs to the east with fishing, swimming beaches and the incredible scenery at the dam (barragem) near Castelo do Bode and Ferreira do Zezere, and the Atlantic coast is only 30-40 minutes away to the west. Caldas de Rainha to the south and close to the coast has a lovely walled town and an ancient Spa. Continuing the water theme - there is a fantastic Water Park near the town of Pombal 30 minutes northwest of the casa.

The large city of Coimbra is only 30 minutes to the north, and has a multitude of shops, cinemas, cafes and restaurants, as well as an historical university older than either Oxford or Cambridge.

The Moors managed to get as far as this part of Portugal before the Christians drove them back south during the crusades, and you can see the historical evidence in the Crusader castle at Tomar, the lovely Templar church in the stunning little village of Dornes on the river Zezere, and the church at Fatima on one of the 'paths of faith' - ancient pilgrimage routes through Europe - only 25 mins south of the casa.

Small vans come through the village of Marques, some daily some weekly, selling bread, groceries or fish, but the village of Loureira is only 5km away and has a little café and shop used by the local people from all the surrounding villages, so is a great place to practice your Portuguese!

The market town of Alvaiazere is only 10 km to the northeast, and has a garage, two supermarkets, a swimming pool, 9 café/restaurants and a post office.

Although slightly closer to Porto, the new A13 dual carriageway from Lisbon bring you to within 10 km of Marques making the drive less than 2 hours. Ryanair and Easyjet fly into both cities, the drive from Porto being only 2 hours 20 minutes, giving you a choice of budget airlines and destinations.

Relaxation! Stress free and chilled out, peace, quiet, beauty and birdsong. Accessible from both Lisbon and Porto, the whole area is appealing and has amazing historic interest and value. Templars and Moors, castles and rivers, mountains and olive groves, wildlife and restaurants - this is the old and timeless Portugal. The privacy and beauty of the casa setting is rare, and the large pool is just the icing on the cake! However, please remember this is a traditional, rural and rustic casa - please don't expect Ritz-style amenities!

  • Fresh sweet oranges, lemons and other fruit is available from the garden, and a juicer is provided. Vans come to the village regularly with fresh produce, vegetables, bread and fish. The grocery van comes Friday lunchtime and sounds her horn right outside the casa - a good time to practice your Portuguese!
