Beachside holiday chalet

Overview

Property

Updated: 03-Dec-2016
Tiniest charming beachside chalet

Beachside Chalet No1 is approached from a residential road, offering a safe and peaceful environment. The quiet village of Gurnard sits west along the coast from the bustling internationally renown yachting town of Cowes.

HISTORY - The chalet is one of a row built in the 1930s on the waterfront for holiday use. They have been slowly modernised over the decades with some still very much as they were when originally built giving the area a feel reminiscent of times gone by. The charm of this unique little area of the Island owes a lot to the planning restrictions keeping redevelopment of these chalets to a strict character code of single storey, pastel coloured shiplap cladding, pitched roofs, porches and low picket fencing. The Marsh is clearly defined at one end by a delightful little bridge over a water inlet, The Luck, home to a cluster of small fishing boats. At the other end stands a gentle hill leading up to the village pub and shop.

During WW2, A Sergeant was accommodated in Chalet 1, and the other chalets accommodated the wrens who operated the anti aircraft search lights. After the war, these chalets were used as holiday accommodation. Over the decades, most of the chalets on the other side of the road have been rebuilt, but most on the sea side are still original, but updated with modern conveniences, giving the area a feel reminiscent of times gone by.

OUR CHALET fronts onto a large lawned area with direct access to the beach. The lack of fencing between the chalets allows for an open an friendly feel, though Chalet No1 has its own picket fenced garden from which to enjoy the sea views more privately. We have recently removed the front fence panel (in the photos) in order to improve the view.

The quiet beach in front of the property changes with every high tide; mostly shingle with patches of sand and groynes of natural rock. The yachting activity in the Solent ensures a constant changing scenery. Varied and glorious sun sets over the water will take your breath away. You will never bore of watching this particular part of the world go by.

The chalet renovations have been designed to make most use out of all the space. The one room accommodates living, dining, kitchen galley and a cosy nook for the standard double bed. A wet room with toilet, shower, basin and electric towel rail is off this main room. Clever storage solutions throughout allow the area to feel clutter free.

The emphasis for a holiday in this chalet is to 'get away from it all'. With this in mind, there is no television or high fi system. If you wish to be entertained, bring your laptop to connect to our wi-fi free of charge, and your own radio or iPod dock for your iPod.

There is off road parking and bicycle storage is available on request. The bus service is only twice a day, with the nearest bus stop servicing 4 buses an hour to Newport and Cowes, about 15 mins walk. Walking into Cowes takes about 40 mins. Walking to the village shop and pub takes about 8 mins. There is a cafe/restaurant on the coast within 5 mins walk west, another within 10 mins walk east. Depending on your mobility, you may find bringing a car to the Island useful.

HEATING - there is a log effect electric fan for instant heat, and an electric oil radiator for more permanent background heat.

ELECTRIC - This is charged at cost: the meter is read before your booking and then again afterwards. As a guide, our winter guests using the heater use approx £2.50 per day including the standing charge; our summer guests a lot less. A separate electric deposit is requested at the time of booking; you will be returned the balance not used, within 14 days of the end of your booking.

MOBILITY - The chalet is on one level, but due to the limited space inside, it is probably unsuitable for wheelchair users. If you are particularly tall or big, you might the bed nook and shower area awkward.

CHILDREN - The chalet is really only suitable for a maximum of 2 people. If you have a baby, you could bring your own travel cot, but this would take up most of the floor space.

DAMAGE DEPOSIT - A £150.00 damage deposit is requested, and will need to be paid for at the time of booking. It is returned within 14 days of the end of your booking via bacs.

DOGS - Dogs are welcome, but must be kept off all furniture for health, hygiene and allergy reasons. If you like your dog to sleep with you in your bed, this is not the property for you.

WARNING - The chalet is tiny, just 4m x 4m. Although the bed is a standard double, it is set in an alcove; if you are very tall or big, you might find it uncomfortable.

SMOKING - No smoking inside the chalet.

LANDLORDS - Nigel and Kuki live next door, so are available if you need anything during your visit.

Cosy and in the most beautiful location

My boyfriend and I stayed for three nights and had a lovely time! The chalet is very small, but is ideal for couples. The views from the chalet were stunning and the location is perfect for a quiet getaway. We loved it!

Quirky, cute and peaceful

  • 4 of 5

Hubby whisked me away for a few days for our first trip to the IOW, and booked this little beach hut. Such a quirky little place, with some lovely decorative touches and with almost everything you need ( perhaps a few condiments would be nice) for a few days away. Its almost directly on the beach and although the external pictures on the website are a little old and slightly misleading (nothing major, or enough to have put us off going though) its still a really lovely place to stay, very clean and well kept with lots of information pertinent to the island and local area, which is helpful to newbies like us. My only issue was the mattress could do with renewing as it was a tad lumpy, but apart from hat it was a fab little bolt hole, with a great sea view, serenely quiet, a great central location, nicely decorated inside, and just a really nice experience. Id happily recommend this to anyone. ( oh, one other thing, its small. very small. so if you are over 6 ft, you may want to prepare yourself :) , I'm fine as Im just over 5 ft :) , but hubby wasn't so lucky )

I can highly recommend:

The Coast restaurant in Cowes - delicious food and great staff.

A visit to the Garlic Farm - absolutely fantastic

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We have only been letting the chalet for a year, so I hope the photos are not too old. The photo of the exterior is the only one that needs updating as we removed the front fencing so that the view of the sea is not clipped for our guests. The internal photos show exactly how small the chalet is, as does the text, especially for tall people, to enable guests to make a decision as to whether they would be comfortable. My husband and I used the chalet for the month of August last year and didn't have a problem with the mattress, so we will inspect again to see if it may have developed a problem since; thank you for bringing our attention to it. I am glad you enjoyed your stay so much, and look forward to seeing you again. Kuki

Nice stay at Beachside Chalet in Gurnard

  • 4 of 5

I stayed here for 4 nights in October with my dog for a tranquil autumn getaway, and really enjoyed it. The location is lovely, right on the beach with some grass out the front so it was easy to let the dog out in the morning and evening for a quick pee! Lovely walk to Cowes too along the beach - although you have to time it right with the tides as the short walk from the Chalet to Gurnard (where the esplanade starts) gets completely covered at high tide and for a couple of hours either side.

The chalet itself was very well equipped and nicely furnished with lots of cupboard and drawer space, which is handy as the chalet is on the small side. If there are 2 of you, you would need to be very friendly to cope with the small space. It was fine however for me and the dog! The area is nice, very quiet and tranquil, and it is lovely to be right on the beachfront and wake up to the sea each morning. The dog was in heaven! If you think you will miss the telly, bring a laptop... Overall really enjoyed our stay there, and the owner was extremely helpful and responded fast to all questions.
