About the property

Opposite Museum Gardens, wonderful view, walking distance to all attractions.

58 Marygate (white cottage on the left in the picture) is a 300 year old cottage that has been recently completely renovated to a high standard, whilst retaining its original period features and charm.

It has a superb view from the front of the house over the entrance to the Museum Gardens and St Olaves Church.

Marygate is a fascinating, attractive street in a central York location, it is not too busy so is quiet at night. It's location makes it an ideal base to explore all of York's many attractions, all are within easy walking distance, Minster 5 mins walk, main shopping areas 5 minutes walk through the Museum Gardens.

It has been equipped and furnished to a high standard incorporating a hand made kitchen with granite worktops and Smeg and Neff appliances.

Bathrooms feature travertine tiles, duravit sanitaryware and hansgrohe rain showers, the main bathroom also has a freestanding bath.

The lounge has a period Georgian fireplace with solid oak flooring, comfy sofas and 2 old leather arm chairs, there is a 40" Flat screen TV with a Netflix subscription.

Bedrooms include quality beds and soft, top quality cotton bedding. The master bedroom has a kingsize bed and an en suite bathroom with a great view at the front of the house. Also at the front of the house is bedroom 2 with a kingsize bed again with a great view over the front. At the back of the house is the dormer bedroom with 2 single beds and a nice view down Marygate Lane. There are flat screen TV's in all the 3 upstairs bedrooms. Downstairs is the fourth bedroom with bunk beds suitable for adults or kids. Outside is a small courtyard area with patio furniture. There is also a fast WIFI connection.

There is the excellent Star Inn The City restaurant in the Museum Gardens opposite the house 2 minutes walk away. The rest of Yorks' restaurants are just through the Museum Gardens 5-10 minutes walk. There are two pubs on Marygate itself and a Sainsburys local at the top of Marygate 3 minutes walk away. The River Ouse is at the bottom of Marygate 1 minute walk away.

Regrettably we cannot accept bookings from stag or hen weekends as the property is in a quiet residential neighbourhood.

Fortunately, we are unaffected by flooding as we are on an incline up the street.

About Louise Warman

I live in York with my husband and 3 girls. We love living in this vibrant, historic city.

Louise Warman purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Louise Warman chose York

We love Marygate and got married opposite this house in the Museum Gardens in the Hospitium. We fell in love with its quirky interior and friendly charm

What makes this cottage unique

It is rare to find a period cottage in central York so we were lucky to get it. It is on a great street because we are central yet away from the hustle and bustle

Guestbook comments from the owner

This is a charming house in a quiet but central location. It is beautifully presented with many thoughtful touches (fluffy bathrobes, high quality bed linen, plenty of coat hangers, proper napkins, a gorgeous well appointed kitchen to die for) added to our comfort and ensured that we really relaxed in luxury.

Our son was performing in Britton’s opera ‘Albert Herring’ which was being put on by Aspect Opera in Rownstree Park - great fun and we were lucky with the weather. We also enjoyed walking the City walls, visiting the Minster, strolling through the ancient streets and marvelling at the elegant beauty of Fairfax House and its contents.

Two of the rooms are rather small (one with bunk beds and the other with a sloping ceiling) and outside space is somewhat limited, but we enjoyed our five night stay tremendously.

Clever marriage of comfortable charm with the practical. The best holiday house in York.

  • 5 of 5

We wanted a house in York that would take eight adults in four rooms, with good facilities where we could cook and as near to being like home as we could get. This Marygate house fulfills every need. It is in itself a masterpiece of conversion from a small artisan style cottage, to an up to date comfortable, charming, modern, town house, where everthing works. There is a danger in decorating and furnishing a house like this, of it becoming bland and loosing character. Remarkably this has not happened here and the marriage between comfort, charm and practicality, is pretty near perfect. All the main facilities of York are within easy walking distance and the view of the Museum Garden's medieval entrance from the sitting room a delight. Under-floor heating in the kitchen made walking around barefoot on a snowy January day, a quirky delight. Our planned joint celebration of 160 years and nearly 60 years of marriage, could not have been better placed, both for us, our children and their children. Thank you so much.

Comfortable, well equipped and characterful

  • 4 of 5

This property is extremely central so all the main tourist areas are within easy walking distance- crucial given the traffic problems in York!

The house is very comfortable and well equipped, although I would not recommend it for those with any mobility issues as the stairs are quite steep and narrow and there are low doorways. The Christmas tree was a lovely touch!

It would have scored 5* if there had been parking as an extra £10-12 a day per car adds up.
