About the Owner

We moved here for the peace and tranquility that this valley has to offer. While we have neighbours within a few hundred metres we all respect the need to keep noise to a minimum so that everyone can enjoy being away from the hustle, bustle, noise and stress of modern life.

We live in the old barn across the garden from the cottage and keep ourselves out of sight during your stay except to maintain the pool and garden first thing in the morning and late in the evening. It also means that we're on hand to make sure you are happy and comfortable during your stay.

Idilic hide away in beautiful French countryside

  • 5 of 5

"If peace and quiet and beautiful views of the idilic French countryside is your idea of a great holiday, then I would strongly recomend this lovely cottage in Blis et born. Set on the side of a hill near the bottom of a valley, it offers you all you could want from a countryside retreat. Their charming gite comfortably accommodated myself, my wife and our 2 young daughters 10 and 12. We were made to feel incredibly welcome by Paul & Barbara, who seemed to strike the perfect balance of being there when needed, yet at the same time leaving you to enjoy your own holiday.

The pool ( which my daughters never seemed to be out of) was lovely and clean and gets the sun all day long and you have a lovely decked area with a bbq at the side , which we ate at most nights, whilst watching the sun go down. Myself and my family had a thoroughly wonderful time, my only regret, is that I didn't book it for longer, I won't make that mistake next year!"

A beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

The setting was absolutely stunning, surrounded by woodland, you really feel like you are "away from it all" the only sounds were nature doing its thing - crickets and tree fogs chirrup at dusk etc - our idea of heaven!

Handily this remote idyll was actually only about a 20 minute drive to supermarkets and amenities needed when self-catering with small children, and not much further to the beautiful historic town of Perigeux where even our 2 kids (3&5 years) enjoyed the cobbled streets, market, cafes, ice cream parlour and magnificent cathedral (tip - it's cool even when it's 30°C outside.)

The cottage itself was really lovely. The owners have done a good job of mixing modern style and comfort with the tradional rustic French farmhouse. The bedrooms are good sizes (would easily fit a travel cot in any of them if needed) with nice touches such as plenty of reading lamps, drawers and clothes hanging, insect screen on windows and beds very comfy even for my husband who has a bad back. We were able to spread out (kids aren't good at sharing a room) as it can actually sleep 6. Towel bales were also in each bedroom. We only had to bring our own towels for swimming.

The kitchen area was well equipped again with everything you'd expect to find and thoughtful touches such as cling film, foil & sandwich bags, salt & pepper and a dishwasher with detergent as well.

We used the pool every day, it is so well maintained and in the prettiest setting (gardens are gorgeous, fragrant herbs growing and complete with little geckos darting around) it was not difficult to spend hours there. There were plenty of sun loungers around the pool, parasols and a shaded seating area and also a private decked terrace at the other side of the cottage, that had a dining set under an adjustable awning plus coffee table & chairs that were perfect for watching the sunset once our kids were tucked up in bed!

Other stuff we found useful was a child safety gate available for use at the top of the stairs, a night light on the landing, washing basket & pegs (washing machine available in utility room) and airer too. There is also a barbecue next to the terrace with a complimentary bag of charcoal.

The owners were helpful and friendly, available whenever we had questions. They were knowledgeable of the area, gave good recommendations of where to eat, shop etc.

We would definitely recommend La Gondie to family & friends.

From the Owner

This is a beautiful area of France with really friendly people where the great values of yesteryear, such as politeness and respect for others, still live on. Where we live is conveniently close to Perigueux for the necessities of life and yet is far enough to feel as if you're in the middle of nowhere. If you value peace and quiet then we would love to welcome you to La Gondie.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Bergerac at 42 Miles Nearest Golf : Golf Club De Périgueux, Marsac at 17 Miles Nearest Train : Périgueux at 13 Miles Car: necessary

La Gondie is approximately 2 hours drive from the Atlantic coast with its long sandy beaches and excellent surfing waves, however we are close to several large lakes which have clean sandy beaches, safe swimming areas with sailing, boating and canoeing facilities. Canoe hire is available on many of the rivers.

We are situated approx 20 min drive east of Perigueux. Bergerac airport is approx 45 mins drive to the south, Limoges airport approx 75 mins drive to the north and Bordeaux airport is about two hours to the west of La Gondie. It is approx a 6/8 hour drive to the ferry ports. A vehicle (or bicycle for the seriously energetic) is essential in order to enjoy all that this area has to offer.

We have a restaurant in our local village of Blis et Born, which is about 5 minutes drive away. We have 2 bakeries approx 10/15 minutes drive, but the nearest shopping area, which has everything, such as large supermarkets, pharmacy, clothes shops and numerous restaurants is in Trelissac (outskirts of Perigueux) 20 min drive away. Hautefort, with famous chateau, is just 30 minutes drive.

Further Details:

Within the surrounding area there are many attractions such as canoeing, quad biking, horse riding, go ape park, go-carting, an aqua park, forest walks, cycling as well as the wonderful medieval city of Sarlat and Brantome, known as the Venice of the Perigord. Lascaux is famous for its cave paintings and there are many other amazing caves and Chateaux worth visiting. The area is noted for its cuisine; notably duck, foie gras, wild mushrooms and truffles.

  • The final photo is our house. We are here to keep the pool clean and the grounds maintained. However, this may not suit everybody and although we try to keep a discreet distance, the back of our house does face the pool. La Gondie is set in a very peaceful location where one can completely unwind from the stresses of life and enjoy the tranquillity of the countryside. The pool is the main source of entertainment and families have had a great time here. But because of our setting sound travels throughout the valley which is why noise should be kept to a minimum so as not to impinge on our neighbours, even though theyre a few hundred metres away. The slope of the grounds also mean it is not suitable for playing football and similar games, which some youngsters might find restrictive. We want you to find the right place for your family holiday so please get in touch if you think La Gondie is what you are looking for.
