About the property

Rural stone cottage close to Brittany's major tourist attractions

This beautiful traditional longere sleeps 4-6 people and includes an open-plan downstairs living area with exposed oak beams, 2 sofa beds, wood burner and modern kitchen. Upstairs, is a front bedroom with double bed, back bedroom with twin beds and bathroom. Outside there is a patio area for barbecues and garden orchard, with fruit and vegetables available in season.

Situated in a quiet hamlet, we are close to many of Brittany's major attractions, including Mont St Michel, St Malo, Rennes, Cancale, Dinan, Combourg and Fougeres. Close by are lakeside walks through forests, or along the Ille-et-Rance canal. The Emerald Coast with its long, sandy beaches and wild jagged coastline is also only 45 minutes by car away.

We are within easy reach of the French channel ports as well as Dinard and Rennes airports, which both have low cost airlines flying from the UK. The house is maintained by our friendly neighbours, Sophie and Mustafa, who will work hard to make your stay a pleasure. Pets welcome!

Why Alex Gilmore chose Ille-et-Vilaine

We fell in love with the beautiful stone arches and original fireplace of our house in 2004, and spent over 10 years carefully renovating it to what you see today. The house is close to all the major tourist attractions of Brittany and has a vast choice of day trips available to suit all tastes.

What makes this cottage unique

a beautiful, tranquil spot in rural Brittany

  • 5 of 5

A lovely and sympathetically restored Breton cottage, complete with beautiful arched front door, new but traditional windows deep set in stone walls and a wonderful old stone fireplace now home to a large wood burning stove.

The kitchen area, bathroom and bedrooms combine contemporary style and simplicity with a respect for the atmosphere and history of the old building. Velux windows mean the top floor is bathed in sunlight whilst the ground floor remains cool in the heat of summer. The rear terrace is secluded and peaceful and a perfect spot to while away the evening listening to the birds.

All very kid suitable too ...we had a 3 and 7 year old with us and although not fenced off from the road at the front, it really is very quiet so we were happy to let them roam free, whilst the back garden is secure.

I'm no Brittany expert - but the little hamlet and nearby villages seemed very typically 'Breton' and all the people we met were lovely and friendly. In particular the couple who look after the property (it was beautifully clean and tidy) and live next door - were so welcoming and couldn't do enough for us without being in the least bit intrusive.

This place made for the perfect, peaceful getaway. It's also really well situated for days out at the coast, Mont St Michel, Dinan, Dinard or Rennes. We also had a great afternoon at Cancale (on the coast about 1hr away) clambering on the rocks and then eating mussels and oysters in one of the many lovely seafront restaurants. The next beach north - Port Mer is also well worth a visit if you're after a sandy sunbathing spot - and of course amazing ice cream. However I recommend spending at least one or two days going nowhere - just sat on the terrace or in the sitting room back at La Cudelais enjoying the peace!

Agréable séjour

  • 5 of 5
