About Rhona and Phil

Phil and I are both born and raised in the north west of England. We have worked and lived in the Caribbean for 19 years. We purchased our home in France whilst living in the Caribbean and renovating was a tough but rewarding task. We sympathetically renovated the main house and then had the barn to work on. We started the renovation of the barn when we made France our home. We have thought through essentials for discerning guests who look for a little more than a bed and somewhere basic to stay. Basically, what we would want for ourselves - a comfortable holiday with a little extra. We hope we can provide this experience for you.

Rhona and Phil purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Rhona and Phil chose Avranches area

Maison Poppie is located in a small hamlet within the Parc Naturel in the region of Basse-Normandie.

Whilst we love the peace and quiet of this area it is ideally situated for exploring the delights of Normandy. Amongst the huge variety of activities and places to visit are daily street markets, medieval towns, chateau’s, churches, abbey’s, castles, walking trails, fishing, horse riding, golf, go karting, calvados distillery....... Mont St Michel is the second most visited landmark in France (1 hour drive).

Villedieu-Les-Poeles is the 12th century birthplace of copper (40 minutes).

The Pottery Museum at Le Fresne Poret is a 2 minute drive.

Medieval Bayeux is home to the world famous tapestry (75 mins).

Many WW2 sites and museums including the landing beaches are nearby

Bagnoles-de-l'Orne is a beautiful place to visit with parks, shops, golf and many places to eat (40 minutes).

Granville (1 hour) has sailing, diving, sea kayaking, land yachting and canoeing. There is also a superb links golf course.

Medieval Domfront is a town with half timbered houses and castle (20 minutes).

About 1 hour away is the ancient town of Fougeres with a castle and gardens.

Lonley l'Abbaye famous for a Abbey and biscuit works is a pretty village (15 mins)

Mortain is 10 minutes away and was the site of a huge WW2 battle that helped swing the war in the Allies favour.

It also has the ‘Grand Cascade’ waterfall where you can walk and climb, L’Abbaye Blanche (ancient Cistercian Abbey), and Petit Chappelle where, on a clear day, you can see Mont St. Michel.

There is also an outside heated swimming pool and Go Kart track.

Just outside Ger is Fosse Arthour - allegedly the resting place of King Arthur – with lovely country walks (15minutes).

You can walk for miles in the area along old railways lines or along the chemins (bridleways). Walkers will find numerous trails around Barenton, Ger, Mortain, Sourdeval and St-Hilaire-du-Harcouet.

Large discounts available for Vire Lac D'Athee Golf course.

What makes this cottage unique

The detached barn conversion was completed in December 2015 and is situated next to the owners home but totally detached, private and independent. We have tried to incorporate all the things that we wanted when holidaying in France and offer a little more luxury than the normal gite experience.

Ferries and flights are always changing but a quick search on the internet will give you the latest information.

Brittany Ferries to: Caen – 90 km from us, St. Malo – 105 km, Cherbourg – 140 km, Le Havre – 175 km.

TRAIN - Eurostar to Calais – 420 km from us.

FLIGHTS - Ryanair to Dinard (near St Malo), FlyBe to Rennes – both 110 km from us.

Poppie Perfection

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I have just returned from the most relaxing stay in Maison Poppie. From first contact to farewell our dealings with the owners Phil and Rhona were a pleasure. They are the perfect hosts, very welcoming yet unobtrusive and keen that you enjoy the property and area, yet always on hand should you need anything.

The cottage itself is gorgeous, it is set in a tiny hamlet where the only sounds to be heard are birdsong and the sound of farmers working the surrounding fields. Two luxurious large en site bedrooms and an extremely comfortable living area and modern fitted kitchen make Maison Poppie a pleasure to return to after a hard days exploration. Added to this is the wonderful welcome pack on arrival containing eggs from the owners hens, milk, bread, butter, jams and more.

The cottage is ideally situated for many of the local attractions Normandy has to offer, all reachable in about an hour.

In all the years that we have been travelling on holiday my wife and I firmly believe that Maison Poppie is as good as if not better than anywhere we have previously visited. We would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone who desires a little rural luxury.

Home sweet home

  • 5 of 5

What a blessing to find this amazing home. We were two couples traveling without children, but I plan on coming back and bringing my children.

The home itself is super clean, modern and has many conveniences such as washer, dishwasher, coffee pot, tea kettle, full size fridge, most anything you would need for basic cooking, tea towels, ice bags, tv, internet, movies, bath tub, shower, iron, blow dryer, heat, great beds, peace and quiet....

The hosts are lovely and such a joy to meet. Rhona and Phil feel like long lost friends as they eagerly wait to greet you on arrival. They provide an assortment of snacks like bread and butter, fresh eggs and cheese and beverages to get you started. We came in on a Sunday night when most places were closed. They made sure we were taken care of before retiring back home to their house next door.

There are many brochures and maps of local sites in the home. It was about a 45 minute drive to Mont St Michel and very reasonable drives to the many DDay sites.

The booking was simple and very fair. The hosts speak both English and French. That was a bonus for us to hear a familiar tongue when we needed help or directions. The bottom line is they really want you to enjoy this area as much as they do.

Go ahead and book without hesitation today.

Just returned from a truly amazing week at "Maison Poppie" - Highly recommended.

The cottage is fitted to a very high standard with Rhona & Phil being the perfect hosts. Nothing was too much trouble.

Location is rural so quiet and relaxing but still within easy driving distance of all the major Normandy attractions.

Will definitely be paying "Maison Poppie" a return visit

Maison Poppie is a wonderful place to stay!!!

  • 5 of 5

Maison Poppie is a really lovely renovated barn which lives up to the description ' luxury accommodation'. The barn has been modernised to a very high standard with beautiful bathrooms, but still maintains the original character throughout with exposed beams. Everything about the cottage is quality and lived up to all our expectations and then some.

Rhona and Phil are on hand if you need anything and are the perfect hosts.

The welcome pack was a lovely thoughtful touch and enjoyed by all, especially the little jars of preserves.

Many thanks Rhona and Phil we had a wonderful stay and will be returning.

Visit 2nd July to 9th July

  • 5 of 5

First impressions of the cottage was very good, set in a lovely quiet hamlet. The cottage was just as described, recently refurbished, to a very high standard, perfectly set out for two couples. The property was very clean and well maintained. We were given a very friendly welcome by the owners and provided with a very helpful welcome pack. They also provided very good information regarding the surrounding area and local facilities. They suggested a very good restaurant, run by a British couple, which was excellent and very good value for money. We would certainly recommend this property to our friends and relatives.

Rhona and Phil were very welcoming hosts on arrival and were also available should we need anything throughout our stay. Thankyou +++

The property was immaculate the best self catering i have ever stayed in and i am fussy and particular regarding cleanliness and state of repair.

Designed tastefully and benefitting from an ensuite to each bedroom. There was a welcome pack on arrival this too was very well thought out with little jars of home made chutney and jam, fresh eggs, bread, milk, cheese, butter, chocolates and wine and the beautiful fresh roses that lasted throughout the week.

The TV had an inbuilt usb with plenty of dvd's and music to watch and listen to on the rainy days. There was english TV and the added benefit of wifi at the property.

Ample hot water and central heating when needed.

Parking for 2 cars.

The cottage/gite was positioned in a little commune again very french and very welcomming. It was total relaxation and a joy to sit on the loungers in a peaceful location and soak up the sun despite the rain!!

Ger was only a bike ride away less than 2km to the bakers/boulangerie.There too is a chemist, a bar and the equivalent of a spar shop.

Mortain is again only 10km away if that, a 30 minute cycle ride, a few hills enroute but welcomed the challenge.

Mortain has shops along the high street. The town has a carrefour where we brought our weekly groceries there is also an Aldi and the benefit of a open air heated swimming pool and plenty of walks.

I cannot fault this property and will definitely be returning next year.

Thankyou both for such a relaxing and enjoyable stay it was the perfect find.
