About Rhona and Phil

Phil and I are both born and raised in the north west of England. We worked and lived in the Caribbean for 19 years. We purchased our home in France whilst living in the Caribbean and renovating was a tough but rewarding task. We sympathetically renovated the main house and then had the barn to work on. We started the renovation of the barn when we made France our home. We have thought through essentials for discerning guests who look for a little more than a bed and somewhere basic to stay. Basically, what we would want for ourselves - a comfortable holiday with a little extra. We hope we can provide this experience for you.

Rhona and Phil purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Rhona and Phil chose Avranches area

Maison Poppie is located in a small hamlet within the Parc Naturel in the region of Basse-Normandie.

Whilst we love the peace and quiet of this area it is ideally situated for exploring the delights of Normandy. Amongst the huge variety of activities and places to visit are daily street markets, medieval towns, chateau’s, churches, abbey’s, castles, walking trails, fishing, horse riding, golf, go karting, calvados distillery....... Mont St Michel is the second most visited landmark in France (1 hour drive).

Villedieu-Les-Poeles is the 12th century birthplace of copper (40 minutes).

The Pottery Museum at Le Fresne Poret is a 2 minute drive.

Medieval Bayeux is home to the world famous tapestry (75 mins).

Many WW2 sites and museums including the landing beaches are nearby

Bagnoles-de-l'Orne is a beautiful place to visit with parks, shops, golf and many places to eat (40 minutes).

Granville (1 hour) has sailing, diving, sea kayaking, land yachting and canoeing. There is also a superb links golf course.

Medieval Domfront is a town with half timbered houses and castle (20 minutes).

About 1 hour away is the ancient town of Fougeres with a castle and gardens.

Lonley l'Abbaye famous for a Abbey and biscuit works is a pretty village (15 mins)

Mortain is 10 minutes away and was the site of a huge WW2 battle that helped swing the war in the Allies favour.

It also has the ‘Grand Cascade’ waterfall where you can walk and climb, L’Abbaye Blanche (ancient Cistercian Abbey), and Petit Chappelle where, on a clear day, you can see Mont St. Michel.

There is also an outside heated swimming pool and Go Kart track.

Just outside Ger is Fosse Arthour - allegedly the resting place of King Arthur – with lovely country walks (15minutes).

You can walk for miles in the area along old railways lines or along the chemins (bridleways). Walkers will find numerous trails around Barenton, Ger, Mortain, Sourdeval and St-Hilaire-du-Harcouet.

Large discounts available for Vire Lac D'Athee Golf course.

What makes this cottage unique

The detached barn conversion has been completed to a very high standard and is situated next to the owners home but totally detached, private and independent. We have tried to incorporate all the things that we wanted when holidaying in France and offer a little more luxury than the normal gite experience.

Ferries and flights are always changing but a quick search on the internet will give you the latest information.

Brittany Ferries to: Caen – 90 km from us, St. Malo – 105 km, Cherbourg – 140 km, Le Havre – 175 km.

TRAIN - Eurostar to Calais – 420 km from us.

FLIGHTS - Ryanair to Dinard (near St Malo), FlyBe to Rennes – both 110 km from us.

We can arrange a 10% discount on Britany Ferries - just ask us for details.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your positive response; we are really glad you enjoyed your stay. As we are striving to make the cottage a perfect place for everyone to stay was there any particular reason you marked 4 stars out of 5? We are always eager to learn if there is anything not quite right - even the smallest detail helps us improve. many thanks Rhona and Phil

Lovely Accommodation in quiet rural area

  • 5 of 5

This was one of the best accommodations I have stayed in, fully equipped with everything you need and all of a high standard, it was lovely sitting outside reading and relaxing, there is a large fridge to store everything you need and after making some lovely meals, it was nice to stick everything in the dishwasher and relax, the sky was also so clear at night you could see lots of stars some shooting, there were supermarkets nearby in Ger and Mortain, we visited the market in St Hilaire which was excellent, followed by the petit cascade ( the little waterfall) outside mortain which was very picteresque, also the medieval town of Domfront was very good and worth a visit as is Mont St Michel, but only if you don't mind lots of stairs. Granville was a nice town on the coast and L'Abbaye Bénédictine Notre-Dame in Lonlay l'Abbaye was a lovely picteresque abbey with a lot of history.

Overall all we had a lovely stay, even when it rained, would definitely stay again

Perfect! Everything you need and more.

  • 5 of 5

The best gite we have stayed in. The house was perfect. Beautifully renovated and furnished. The hosts, Rhona and Phil, were very kind and helpful. Always available if needed but not intrusive. A wonderful welcome pack; no need to get food shopping before you arrive; bread eggs, milk, butter, marmalade, olive oil, wine and nibbles all provided- as was all cleaning stuff and loo rolls! Very spacious rooms. 4 adults would not feel cramped. Instant Hot water and central heating available. Tv with all basic freesat channels. 2 sun loungers and table and chairs provided at the front of the house but very secluded and reasonably private. Very peaceful hamlet with a handful of houses. About 5 minutes from Ger, where there is a little supermarket, post office and pharmacy and petrol station. A few good restaurants nearby. Recommend Le Relais de L'Abbaye at Lonlay L'Abbaye (10 mins) and l'Auberge du Moulin near Briains (via Sourdeval). Also Le Grand Gousier at Domfront. All those places very pretty with the Musee du Moulin, the chateau at Domfront, and the Abbaye church and old cider press at Lonlay to explore. The Parc Botanique de la Basse-Normandie, near Fougeres, is beautiful and easy to walk around for old limpers like us. There is an intriguing little 'auberge' just before the entrance - very basic authentic peasant food. Carrefour at Mortain and Domfront and Coccinelle supermarket at Barenton. Good patisserie and charcuterie in the centre of Domfront. Book now!

C'est magnifique !!! Tres agreeable !! Tres tranquille !

  • 5 of 5

A perfect gite in so many ways - peaceful surroundings, first class comfort, luxury accommodation. Generous and extremely useful welcome pack on arrival. Seemingly endless supply of hot water. Kitchen provides all the necessary facilities required. A perfect hideaway for that ideal holiday in the rural French countryside.

If we were to make any suggestions for potential improvement these would be very minor but a full length mirror in each of the bedrooms (perhaps fixed to the inside of a wardrobe door) would be a welcome addition. So too would be a couple of small occasional tables in the sitting lounge area to accommodate a hot drink......... or even a glass of wine !!

Poppie Perfection

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I have just returned from the most relaxing stay in Maison Poppie. From first contact to farewell our dealings with the owners Phil and Rhona were a pleasure. They are the perfect hosts, very welcoming yet unobtrusive and keen that you enjoy the property and area, yet always on hand should you need anything.

The cottage itself is gorgeous, it is set in a tiny hamlet where the only sounds to be heard are birdsong and the sound of farmers working the surrounding fields. Two luxurious large en site bedrooms and an extremely comfortable living area and modern fitted kitchen make Maison Poppie a pleasure to return to after a hard days exploration. Added to this is the wonderful welcome pack on arrival containing eggs from the owners hens, milk, bread, butter, jams and more.

The cottage is ideally situated for many of the local attractions Normandy has to offer, all reachable in about an hour.

In all the years that we have been travelling on holiday my wife and I firmly believe that Maison Poppie is as good as if not better than anywhere we have previously visited. We would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone who desires a little rural luxury.
