About Matthew and Leila

Hi, we are Matthew and Leila, we purchased Casa Piedras in Sep 2015 having stayed in El Pinar / Bedar a number of times. We live near Cheltenham, England with our two small children Millie and Oliver.

Matthew and Leila purchased this villa in 2015

Why Matthew and Leila chose Mojacar area

Why this property? Why not, it is everything we wanted. A great size property with so much scope as a family home and a rental. No neighbours so lovely and quiet, yet only a short walk to the centre of El Pinar. Mojacar just a short drive away, Garrucha even closer (they have the most amazing seafood). It's great for all types of holiday, you can laze by the pool/on the beach, go mountain biking, scuba diving, fishing - it's all here!

Peace and tranquility

  • 5 of 5

We arrived quite late to the villa and where met by the caretaker Sally who showed us around. We asked if there was anywhere we could get some water as we hadn't passed any shops on the way, she kindly went to her house in the village and came back with a pack of 6 bottles. Thanks Sally.

This villa has everything you need to have a great stay, The outside is huge with a few different seating areas, pool and garden which is awash with wildlife. My favourite thing was the pool it's big enough to swim some lengths and also very warm on one day it got up to 31dg. It was a chore some days to drag ourselves away from it to tour the areas. We found some great beaches in the area our favourite being Vera it was huge. I would highly recommend this villa especially for family's with children, our grandkids locked it.

We did not think that this property was suited to winter lets in its current condition.

  • 2 of 5

The property is large with very good potential when fully set up for letting. It has a good position with great views and is very quiet. It should be noted that it adjoins a very large abandoned buildings development site, and that the village of El Pinar is part of this. The village has absolutely no facilities, shops, or bar.

The property was advertised as having a heated pool available. Due to the fact that the heating system was insufficient (and no-one appeared to understand its operation) we were only able to use the pool for a very few days.

There is no security system or alarm for the pool (a concern for those with small children)

No doubt in the summer period the pool area will be very good with plenty of space and privacy

In general terms the property both inside and outdoors was very poorly equipped and furnished and fell far short of what should be expected at the price charged. We could elaborate at length on this subject.

As we had driven all the way from Cornwall we and our friends decided to make the best of things, and enjoy our visit to and exploration of Southern Spain.

Many people with reasonable expectations would not have stayed, and some would have expected a refund

Until significant improvements are made to the comfort and fixtures and fittings, we could not recommend this property for winter lets.

With improvements it would be great, especially for those wanting peace and quiet, and with an interest in natural history.

The restaurant in Bedar is great

Owner's Response: We were very surprised and disappointed to receive this review from David. The only communications we received from him during his stay (from this rather long, misleading, and sometimes just plain untrue review) was concerning the pool temperature. Not well equipped for winter? Log burner with plentiful supply of free Olive hardwood, wall mounted electric heaters in every room and in addition to that, another 2 portable gas stoves. The beds have duvets, blankets etc... The solar hot water system has a built-in immersion heater for cloudy days. Please see Barbara K's review that contradicts David in every way (she stayed in January). David's persistent issue was around the pool temperature. I explained to him when he first enquired about booking the villa, that the pool heating system was very much dependant on the weather. Unfortunately, only a week or so before his arrival we had snow for the first time in 30 years, which stripped the pool of much of it's heat. Whilst the heating system maintained the temperature, it did struggle to reheat quickly. I raised this with the installation company who after a number of visits, installed a larger, more powerful heat pump. I'm pleased to say that only a few days after David left, the pool was a very pleasant 29 degrees. Our pool safety complies with Spanish law, and of course we suggest that those unable to swim are not left poolside during your stay. That being said, I am investigating pool alarm systems as an added measure. As for the abandoned buildings...on the drive up the villa you will pass an unfinished building. This is not visible from our villa so should not impact your stay. The bar / restaurant in El Pinar is currently up for sale, hopefully a buyer will be found soon, as it is a welcome addition to the village. Overall, I have to say I'm disappointed in David, he was difficult from day one; demanding free housekeeping and laundry, even though the website clearly states it is not included. He also received a welcome pack that he was not charged for. I believe that if his stay was as unpleasant as he suggests he would have asked for a refund or compensation. We have had no requests for either. On a positive note to finish, only yesterday we received an email from our current guests who said how pleased they were with the villa, and indeed the warm pool.

Great villa - quiet, spacious, private.

  • 5 of 5

Casa Piedras is an older villa, spacious and comfortable, with updated bathrooms and kitchen. We stayed for two weeks in July, together with our son, daughter-in-law and grandsons. The weather was excellent and we spent a lot of time enjoying the beautiful pool and surrounding patio areas. Having been to El Pinar several times in the past, our only disappointment was to find the restaurant, bar and pool closed. We enjoyed the slight remoteness and privacy. Overall, we were very satisfied.

Relaxing location

  • 5 of 5

Situated on the outskirts of a quiet hill villiage Casa Piedras is an ideal location for a relaxing break yet only 15-20 mins from the coast with all its many attractions. We were conveniently placed to descover the many interesting mountain villiages as well the local beaches and coatal towns. When the weather was good we were content to spend the day around the large private pool area. In the evenings we used the property's ample facilities to cater for ourselves and use one of the properties many lovely sitting areas.

Private, peaceful hilltop villa

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic week at the villa. The end of March is early in the season, so it was cold the first day or so, and chilly in the evening, but the villa is well heated (mostly solar) and has lovely wood burning stove in the living room. As the weather improved we spent the entire time outside by the pool, which is very private and secluded. The mountain breeze was very welcome even in March, so in the height of summer it would be really necessary! The villa is very well equiped and the main bedroom as marvellous views. Local towns and hilltop villages offer some great restaurants at very reasonable prices and the coastal towns, 15 minutes away by car, have everything you need. There's also great hiking from the front door, and cycling. You do need a car to get around, but they are cheap to rent. Matt and Leila were really helpful with our questions and provide lots of local information. We'll definitely go back!

Fantastic

  • 5 of 5

We spent 3 weeks in this superb villa. The villa itself is extremely well equiped, there is absolutely nothing you could want that isn't there. For chilly nights there is a fabulous open wood burning fire, very easy to manage. If you want total privacy, peace, quiet and tranquility with a fantastic environment and outstanding views across the mountains with superb walks just outside the front gate, this is the place for you. The icing on the cake is you have all these things but can drive between 10 to 15 minutes to have a wide choice of villages and towns providing restaurants, shops, and nightlife. We found the best supermarkets were Lidle on the way to Mojacar or the supermarket in the shopping complex near Mojacar. The best browsing shops were in Garucha which also has the best beach and promenade walk. The drive through local villages in the mountains is fantastic with spectacular views. We also visited Almeria and Granada, both within easy reach but there is so much to see an overnight stay is recommended (very very reasonable prices). The owners could not have been more helpful in our preperations to go and whilst we were there. All this and blue skies and fabulous sunsets, what more could anyone ask for.
