Overview

About the property

Luxury & seclusion in a beautiful and traditional house

The cider tower was built as part of a steading in the early 18th century and was originally a windmill used for pressing apples from the local orchard. The whole steading fell into disrepair long ago but was gradually restored in 2002 by the previous owners. The cider tower is a grade b listed building, the renovation winning a prestigious award from the galloway preservation society for the best restoration and preservation project of that year.

Today the cider tower provides very comfortable and peaceful luxury accommodation for two. It is set in beautiful countryside yet only 10 minutes walk into town.

The master bedroom on the ground floor has a magnificent four poster bed with bathroom and utility across the hall.

Upstairs is the fully equipped kitchen and dining area.

Three further steps take you up to the cosy sitting room with minstrels gallery above.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The Cider Tower is one of the very best places we have holidayed in and as previous guests have already said it all, we just say thank you for providing such a well equipped, comfortable and clean base for us to happily return to after some wonderful days out and about walking, bird watching and just generally enjoying this lovely corner of Scotland

We will be back.

Excellent location and unusual property

  • 5 of 5

Great location for exploring Dumfries and Galloway. Lovely property for two! Well equipped and lovely welcome from the owners- all the basics included so only needed to buy the food. Nice places to eat out in Kirkcudbright. Definitely recommend as an unusual property to stay in.

Lovely holiday home but was disappointed with cleanliness

  • 2 of 5

On arrival we found a note saying the owner would be up with some tea towels but actually had to wait 2 days for them to arrive, not great really and had to dry with kitchen roll. I left a feedback letter with regards to some issues but no one has got back to me to discuss these, so I will post them here, the cleanliness in the kitchen was terrible there was food spillage down the cupboards and fridge it looked like egg yolk, and the cooker door was so greasy I wrote my name in it! There was crumbs in the cutlery drawer and was generally not clean. The rest of the property was ok. Now for the bed! However beautiful it looks it needs a mattress this isn't up for debate I don't have a bad back but after a week sleeping there I couldn't walk and got to the point I dreaded going to bed, the springs are coming through so bad I had to double fold the spare duvet just so I could get some sleep, I thought someone might have called me to discuss my issues but they haven't and time was running out for me to put a review

Owner's Response: Dear Mr and Mrs Hudson I am so sorry to read your review and will address your concerns with honesty. My husband and I called up the day after your arrival to do our usual "meet and greet" and bring tea towels. We met your husband and checked with him that everything was ok. He was happy that you both had all that you needed and did not raise any concerns. I did read your note when I went to clean the cottage the following weekend but did not call you as, by then , you had gone home. We always make a point of saying that our contact number is at the front of the guest book if there are any problems. There was no mention of any problems with cleanliness when we met your husband and you did not contact us during the week. As I clean the property myself each week with my cleaning lady, I know that all was well when I left the property earlier on your day of arrival. Cleanliness is top priority and each week I wipe out the cupboards, drawers, cooker and the fridge. We have done a number of self catering holidays ourselves over the years and know how yucky it is to see crumbs etc that are not of your own making! There are several minor marks on some of the cupboard doors where they have been banged into the door handle of the adjacent cupboards making indents into the varnish. This is not dirty - it is just wear and tear and does not detract from the appearance of the kitchen. Again, previous guests have regularly commented that this is the cleanest accommodation they have stayed in. To address the bed issue- we have previously had comments from guests about how well they have slept in the four poster bed. We have checked with our subsequent guests if they have been comfortable. There has been a resounding "Yes"" to that question from both sets of guests who have stayed after you. We had actually checked the mattress a couple of weeks before your arrival for comfort ourselves and did not find a problem. I am sorry if I forgot to bring up the tea towels until the day after your arrival but we do supply tea, coffee, filter coffee, milk, butter, all condiments, kitchen roll, loo rolls, soap/shampoo, dishwasher tablets, laundry detergent and washing up liquid plus all towels and linen. There is also a tea tray with fresh cake on arrival. Interestingly, after your stay we did have to spend an extra hour cleaning all your dogs' hair off the rugs and we have had to replace the Laura Ashley duvet cover as it was so covered in dog hair/ paw marks!

Fabulous lodgings in a lovely town

  • 5 of 5

One of the most unique, comfortable and cleanest places I have ever rented. The photos do not do the lodgings justice. Tastefully decorated and very comfortable. Patsy and Alan are wonderful hostess and host, had delicious cake and tea set up on our arrival, willing to assist us with anything we might have questions about.

Our second time and we love this beautiful extraordinary self-catering accommodation. Very friendly helpful owners who live nearby, only half a mile from the centre an elevated position with outstanding views of the estuary.

Out and About

Galloway is known as “Scotland in miniature” and has something for everyone. The area is great for hill and coastal walking, fishing, golf and cycling. The ancient town of Kirkcudbright, a Royal Burgh since 1455, is historically very interesting and has a ruined castle, working harbour, museum and attractive High Street. There are also a number of independent shops and cafes. The town is known as “The Artist’s Town” having been home to EA Hornel, Jessie M King, EA Taylor and their friends in the last century. There are regular summer exhibitions and two permanent art galleries in the town. There is also a comprehensive programme of events throughout the spring and summer. (Link to Kirkcudbright summer festivities).

There are numerous gardens and places of interest within easy reach, including Threave and Logan Botanical Gardens.

You will find local information , maps and guides in The Tower to help you plan your stay. Or you may just want to sit outside on the patio with a glass of wine and admire the view!
