Charming Cottage With Beautiful Private Garden And Countryside Views

Updated: 22-Oct-2016
Cottage in Kingscott, Great Torrington, Devon, England - Secluded Retreat

If your looking for a quiet haven for a peaceful break in the country, The Garden Cottage is just what you are looking for. This little gem is set in the grounds of a large country house, but as it is tucked around the back with it's own private entrance and garden you do not feel overlooked in any way.

The cottage has a large bedroom with a king-size bed and walk-in wardrobe, a spacious lounge which overlooks the lovely garden, a bathroom with shower and a well-equipped kitchen.

Whatever the time of year, The Garden Cottage offers guests a wonderfully relaxing bolt-hole to unwind and relax. Each season comes with it's own charm, in the winter hide away from the elements in the cosy cottage enjoying a glass of wine or playing games in warmth of the lounge, in spring walk in the stunning gardens and marvel at the beautiful flowers, which are coming to life and finally in both the summer and autumn, when the days are the longest and the sun is shining discover the wonders of the ever changing colours of the countryside and the miles of golden beaches on the North Devon coastline.

The Garden Cottage is set in the pretty hamlet of Kingscott and near the historical town of Great Torrington, famous for the site of a great Civil War battle between the Roundheads and Cavaliers. The area is blessed with wonderful rolling countryside and is honeycombed with walks and cycle paths, with the famous Tarka Trail starting or ending at Puffing Billy pub just outside Torrington. There are loads of really good pubs in the area and the New Inn is only a short drive away from the cottage and serves award winning food and good local beer. Explore North Devon towns like Bideford, Barnstaple and Ilfracombe or admire the coastal villages of Clovelly, Westward Ho! and Appledore, all offer travellers a taste of the local area. For those seeking an activity holiday, Devon offers something for everyone, with some of the best surfing in the UK at Saunton, Croyde and Woolacombe. Kite surfing is also popular at the beaches on the North coast. The wilds of Exmoor or the coastal footpath offer walks that will challenge the most adventurous and there is great cycling on the Tarka Trail, which stretches from North Devon to Dartmoor. If you would rather have a more relaxed day out, the gardens at RHS Rosemoor are only 2 miles away and have 65 acres of stunning gardens to explore. There are large country houses to visit at Tapley Park and Arlington Court.

So, not only is The Garden Cottage a lovely place to relax and unwind it also offers guests a great base to explore the region.

Beautiful, spacious cottage in lovely surroundings

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is full of character and has far more space than other properties for two that I have stayed in. It is finished to a high standard, is very well equipped and very clean. The garden is lovely, and huge! The views are fantastic. The central location is perfect for visiting just about any part of Devon without too long a journey. The owners are very friendly and very helpful; I was travelling with my toddler, and no car, to visit relatives in the area and I received an extra phone call before our arrival with offers of extra equipment that could be of use to us during our stay. This was despite my booking at very short notice, so was much appreciated. We were visited every day by the owners' friendly cat, and we remembered to take seed for the birds, which landed right outside the patio doors whenever the cat wasn't visiting. Definitely my new favourite holiday cottage, and my daughter loved it too. Looking forward to staying again, sooner rather than later. Thank you.

A little out of the way, but worth it!

  • 4 of 5

Lovely property, quiet, pretty view in the tiny town of Kingscott. A little bit isolated, but we wanted somewhere central to exploring Exmoor and Dartmoor, as well as parts of Cornwall. Owners very nice - helped with us laundry, which was very unexpected. However, the listing for this charming property needs to be very explicit about the amenities. There is no washer/dryer in the cottage, and the wi-if is such that one really cannot depend on it as a reliable source of communication. These are two factors that were important for our travels, so we were unhappy about the aforementioned.... That said, we would recommend the cottage as a perfect get-away in the Devon area. The near-by town has just about everything you need for stocking the cottage kitchen, and there are several decent restaurants nearby, although the roads are quite narrow and a little scary for those not use to left-side driving!!

Lovely cottage for active young people

  • 3 of 5

This cottage is located in a beautiful garden with excellent countryside views. It was very well- equipped exactly as described. Unfortunately one important fact was well-hidden in spite of 24 pictures being shown But none showed the four steepish steps to the front door, with no hand rail. Not suitable for older or less able guests. This should be made clear in an accessibility statement.

Owner's Response: Garden Cottage is a beautiful ground floor cottage, all on one level. It is generally very popular with elderly people just because of the accessible nature of the cottage. There are however 3 small steps at the entrance which might make it difficult for someone with more severe mobility issues. We are very sorry if this was a problem in this case but it was not made clear how much of a problem this guests mobility would be.

Lovely clean cottage in quiet rural setting

  • 5 of 5

A lovely clean, well maintained and homely cottage. Warm welcome from the owners Sian and Nick and some very welcome treats on arrival - Devon scones, cider and being Easter a chocolate rabbit! Good location and plenty of local places to eat. We would not hesitate to recommend. Thank you.

  • Notes on accommodation: Babies in cots are welcome. Outside: The highlight of The Garden Cottage, needless to say, is the stunning garden, which can be reached via the patio doors in the lounge. There is a lovely table and chairs, a separate wooden bench to admire the country views and sun-loungers to really relax on hot summer afternoons. The Garden Cottage also has a portable BBQ, ideal for alfresco cooking on a warm evening. The Garden Cottage garden is forever changing with the seasons, in the spring the daffodils and snow drops are the first flowers to appear but by the end of the autumn there are beautiful blossoms in every colour to admire in this magical setting. Plenty of local birds, including gold finch, woodpeckers and owls can also be seen visiting the garden and are more than happy if you feed them some sunflower seeds.
