About the property

4-bedroom Scottish Highland cottage located on the Glencarron Estate sleeping 8

Located near Wester Ross on the western edge of the Scottish Highlands is Stag Lodge. This spacious, pet friendly cottage comfortably accommodates up to eight in four bedroom and is within easy reach of Plockton and Applecross, and the glorious beaches on the West Coast of Scotland.

It is the cottage's location within the 12,000 Glencarron Estate that makes it really special. There are four peaks over 3,000 ft on the Estate and four more within an easy drive, so it's an ideal spot for "Munro Baggers". There are wonderful walks from the cottage, and deer stalking, salmon and trout fishing and clay-pigeon shooting can all be organised from the cottage owners.

Stag Lodge is a classic Victorian estate workers cottage that has been recently refurbished to create a spacious, elegant holiday home for friends or families. The cottage is comfortably furnished and equipped to a high standard.

On the ground floor of the cottage there is a large lounge with open fire and doors opening directly onto the patio, which has wonderful views of the Highlands. Off the lounge is the well-equipped kitchen, which is fitted with a wide range of appliances, including a fridge/freezer, an electric twin oven with hob and a dishwasher. There is also a handy utility room where you will find the washing machine and tumble dryer. The final room downstairs is a spacious double bedroom with views of the glen and plenty of storage, this bedroom also benefits from its own en-suite shower room.

The final three bedrooms are all located on the first floor of the cottage and are set up as twins with full size single beds. They share the first floor family bathroom, which is fitted with a bath with overhead shower, a wash basin and a WC.

Outside, Stag Lodge has a good sized garden, which is home to lot of local birds and wildlife. The views from here are beautiful both during the day and at night when you can admire the stars.

Apart from the amazing scenery right outside the cottage, there are also plenty of places to visit with the Isle of Skye, Plockton and the rest of the Highlands to explore. The area is also ideal for a number of activities, including walking, cycling, horse riding and water sports.

Please note that Stag Lodge is a semi-detached cottage set above the road, and it shares its large garden with the property next door.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Just a quick note to say what a great week we had in [the] Cottage, thanks. We were so lucky with the weather and a big thank you to Eric who looked after us well too. The location is ideal for exploring this beautiful area, and we did a mixture of walking locally to traveling as far as Skye enjoying some excellent food along the way. The cottage was very cosy and well equipped for all our requirements."

Gorgeous property, remote location, friendly estate manager

  • 5 of 5

Six of us stayed three nights at Stag Lodge and we really enjoyed it. There are two full baths, a full kitchen, wireless internet, TV with cable/satellite and movies, books, central heat that works really well, and a washer and dryer. The location is rather remote and, from the west, includes several single-track roads, but the drive is beautiful and we saw wildlife daily, like deer and martens. The midges were horrible and a week later I'm still itching, so I definitely recommend bug spray and keeping doors and windows shut! Tesco will deliver groceries, which is convenient. The closest petrol and groceries were in Kyle of Lochalsh, about 45 minutes away, so plan ahead for gas and shopping. It was a great base of operations to see everything from Eilean Donan to the Isle of Skye.

Owner's Response: We are delighted that you enjoyed Stag Lodge and thank you for the lovely review. There is in fact petrol and groceries much nearer at Lochcarron (two grocers and two petrol stations) 15 or 20 minutes away

Wonderful stay At Stag Lodge

  • 4 of 5

Stag Lodge was ideal for our purpose. We are a family and friends group who are in to Hill Walking. There is plenty of space to relax, cook and dry cloths. Perfect location for many Munro's, including very good access to some courtesy of the estate. Very comfortable and fully enjoyable.

The one criticism was the poor flow rate in the down stairs shower.

Stag Cottage

  • 4 of 5

Had a great time, and loved the cottage - again. I have stayed on the Glen Carron estate many times over the years. If I have one small gripe, the water pressure for the shower is so incredibly weak that it clearly needs a pump.

Delightful location and lodge

  • 4 of 5

Fantastic location and made to feel very welcome when we arrived. Rooms all set out to accommodate the family as booked and the main bedroom being downstairs away from the other rooms was useful with kids being bit older. House was well equipped but a curtain screen to allow more use of the upstairs bathroom would have been useful.

There are wonderful outdoor country pursuits to enjoy when staying at Stag Lodge, these include clay pigeon shooting, fishing, stalking and nature spotting walks, all of these can be enjoyed on the Glencarron Estate and arranged in advance. Further afield there are more opportunities to enjoy spectacular walks, as well as trails for cyclists, golf courses, boat trips and sailing opportunities.

Stag Lodge is located on the 12,000 acre Glencarron Estate, which lies on the western edge of the Scottish Highlands in Wester Ross. This beautiful Highlands location allows guests to admire the splendour of the local glens and lochs, which are best experienced on foot with four peaks over 3,000 feet located on the estate itself, and another eight only a short drive away.

The estate can also arrange a number of outdoor country pursuits, including stalking, fishing, and clay pigeon shooting.

The nearest village is Locharron, which stretches for two miles along a gorgeous loch and has a number of handy local services, including a village shop, a bank and a garage. The village also has fishing, sailing and golf available. For railway enthusiasts, the Kyle Line can be seen at the village. Nearby restaurants include Stratchcarron Hotel, The Carron and Rockville.

In the opposite direction to Locharron is Achnasheen, which sits at the foot of Bheinn Fionn and is home to the Ledgown Hotel and Achnasheen Railway Station.

Other places to visit within easy reach of the cottage include the Isle of Skye, Eilean Donan Castle, Attadale Gardens and several whiskey distilleries.
