About Mark Ryland

We are Mark and Yvonna a husband and wife team. We moved from the South East just before Xmas 2014 as an 'escape to the country'.

Our cottages are set in a courtyard along with our home, the old farmhouse, so we are nearby to help if any problems arise. We live here with our 2 young boys Ben and Harvey ages 9 and 6.

Mark Ryland purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Mark Ryland chose Torridge

We believe we have the largest indoor pool in the whole of North Devon for the number of cottages. You can basically guarantee a private swim every day that you are here.

Our country cottages are set in 6 acres and surrounded by common land, perfect for walking. Whilst being rural our family friendly cottages are not isolated and are less than a mile away from the small market town of Great Torrington with pubs, restaurants, take-aways, supermarket etc.

Great Cottage in a Beautiful Setting

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Hill Farm Cottages with our two boys aged 3 & 5 & had a fantastic holiday. Our cottage (Half Penny) was extremely comfortable, very clean & well equipped. It's a very family friendly place with an indoor & outdoor play area, a lovely warm swimming pool with changing rooms, large shower cubical & drying area for all your wet towels etc. The laundry room came in very handy. We felt everything a family could need has been carefully thought about & is provided here. Our boys loved feeding the animals in the mornings too. Whilst there were other families with children staying here, we found it was still very peaceful & quiet. The views are wonderful & as for location, it's only a 2-3 minute drive into Great Torrington which has a number of shops (including Co-op & Lidl) & places to eat. The nearest beaches we went to were Westward Ho! & Instow (approx 20-25 minutes drive). Woolacombe beach is a bit further (approx 50 mins) but an excellent beach for children with lots of eating places etc although it was extremely busy on the day we went and the beach was very crowded. That said though, it was well worth it & the kids loved it. Overall, great facilities in a great location. Thanks Mark & Yvonna for a wonderful holiday. We will happily recommend to friends & family & hope to return ourselves one day.

Owner's Response: Hi Eleanor Many thanks for taking the time to write a review. Sorry about the wifi, I'll take a look at that, sometimes the boosters in the cottages get moved and don't then connect to the router very well. If you come again and wifi is patchy pls don't hesitate to come and ask me to take a look, we are connected to fibre so as long as the wifi signal is good internet is fast. Thanks again, Mark and Yvonna

Just outstanding

  • 5 of 5

We had 2 cottages for New Year for myself, hubby and baby and my sisters family including 3 dogs and 2 kids. we had a fab stay and the cottages were like a home away from home and while very helpful the owners were in no way intrusive. we did venture to the beach for a run around but with the fab heated and very warm pool and play room we really had no reason to leave. great stay and would highly reccomend

A fantastic weekend

  • 5 of 5

My family and I hired 4 of the cottages at Hill Farm last weekend. We had a fabulous stay and couldn't have asked for more.

The cottages were well decorated and spotless with excellent amenities. They were perfect for our group of 8 adults and ten children (aged 3-12).

The pool was a huge hit and we spent the majority of our time enjoying it! It had its own changing rooms, shower and drying room which we found incredibly useful with the children.

The farm also has a small collection of animals which the children enjoyed feeding with Mark in the morning. Feeding the pigs and stroking the rabbit were particular highlights for them! We also spent time in the farms play park and games room, enjoying the pool table and table tennis facilities.

The location is fantastic with the town close enough for shopping and takeaways and westward ho! beach close by for a walk.

We were really sad to leave and will definitely look to book again in the near future. Thanks to Mark and Yvonne for making it so wonderful.

Idyllic getaway, fun and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We were really struggling to find baby friendly accommodation in close proximity to great beaches and local attractions, that wouldn't break the bank! So Hill Farm was an absolute find. The cottage (Beam Weir) was large yet still had that English cottage feel, with everything you could need for a baby. Nestled in the hills, with the roaming chickens, it makes for a picturesque and relaxing break. On the days we felt adventurous there was lots to do and see, from Instow and Croyde beaches to the Tarka trail. We can't wait to come back and explore some more

A week in Devon

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was well presented and the owners on site to welcome us. The milk in the fridge was a great start as a cup of tea was needed after the long drive. The whole set up of the farm cottages is great, very family friendly with cars having to park out of the way, meaning kids were safe. The pool and games room were why we chose the cottage - just in case! As it was the weather was mainly fine, but we made full use of them anyway. A great area for cycling - apart from the fact we had to drive to the start of the cycle path - road too busy for amateurs. One downside was that there was not much choice for food in Great Torrington, and the cottage is not really in walking distance of the town. Perhaps better aimed at families with younger children, with mums who want to/have to cook, rather than our teenagers and a Mum who was on holiday too! But definitely a lovely holiday, with quiet family time and lots of space inside for scrabble and cards..... needs to look at their WiFi tho. Pokémon was near impossible!

Owner's Response: Hi Anita Thank you for your review and for staying with us, you were great guests. For food in Great Torrington (about a mile away) we have enjoyed The Black Horse (English pub food). As well as other Torrington pubs that serve food (none of which we have tried so cannot recommend) Torrington also boasts a pizzeria, 2 Chinese takeaways and 2 Indian restaurants (1 that delivers) as well as a very good fish and chip shop called Taffs. Within 2 miles the Cyder Presse (English pub food) and the Torridge Inn (Thai food) are good. The Puffing Billy can be walked (about 20mins) through glorious woodland trails from Hill Farm and whilst it closes at 6PM it serves food all day from 8AM, a great place for brunch. Guests often eat near to where they visit during the day, the nearby beaches (20mins away) of Instow and Westward Ho! have plenty of options. Thank you for feedback on the wifi, we have a superfast fibre internet connection so if you were suffering slow speeds it must have been a problem with one of the wifi boosters, we'll take a look.
