Traditional 1800's stone cottage on the outskirts of Dartmoor National Park

Overview

Property

Updated: 28-Nov-2016
2 bedroom stone, mid terraced cottage with many original features

A mid terraced property with a fully enclosed garden. The terrace is built side on to the road and we are the second property in. Downstairs there is a well stocked kitchen with handmade units and a belfast sink as well as a dishwasher and washing machine. The lounge diner has a large stone fireplace with wood burner and window seat. There is a television and DVD player and free wifi. The floors are solid stone or wood, making it ideal for dogs. The downstairs ceiling is lower than a more modern property but an average person has no problem walking around without bumping their head!

The stairs lead to three rooms and a bathroom on the first floor. The main bedroom has a double bed, the second room has two single beds and the third can be used as a small playroom. There is room for a travel cot in the main bedroom, (not provided). The bathroom has an electric shower over the bath. Towels, (including beach towels), bed linen and tea towels are provided.

There is a small, sunny garden with garden furniture and a barbecue. There is ample parking outside on Bond Street. The cottage is in the village of Cornwood, which is inside the boundary of the National Park. There are views of the Moor which is only 2 kilometres away, a pub and a small shop. Ivybridge is the nearest main town where you can find everything you need for a stay in this most beautiful part of the country.

About the Owner

We are a family of five living near Bournemouth. Our roots are in Kent and London, but we decided to move to the South West as it is a pretty part of the UK. We often spent our summer holidays on Dartmoor, and when an opportunity arose we decided to buy ourselves a property their for us to use.

Enjoyed our stay at your cottage, we used it as a base so we could do five days walking. You have a nice place with lovely neighbours. We could have had better weather but you can't book the weather

Once again thanks !!

Getting family together in this cosy little cottage near Plymouth . Very nice place to stay, nice walks and places to go.

Watch out for speedy drives down narrow lanes though....

clean tidy and we'll maintained

  • 5 of 5

We used the cottage as a base while walking on dartmoor, the cottage was all that we could have wished for!!

Tony and Lynn were at the end of the phone should any problems occur but this was never used as all was perfect.

the neighbours were very friendly and helpful, if we ever decided to return we would try to get this property again

We used the local pub on the last day of our visit the landlady was very friendly

the village is for cautious drivers if visiting drive slowly the lanes are quite narrow but safe

Lovely little cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a great week staying at this lovely little cottage. It was clean and comfortable with good facilities. My husband found the headroom a bit low in places being 6ft 6in but he soon learnt when to duck. We found the cottage central to visit either the coast or places in the country. We would certainly return.

Cosy cottage with little privacy.

  • 3 of 5

Our stay in Rose cottage. Cornwood.

A nice house to spend a week’s holiday. The inside is cosy and the kitchen utensils are all there. Did we overlook a good potato peeler?

The cottage is old, and people approaching 1.90 meter in height should be aware that there are lots of opportunities to bang your head and that you cannot stand straight in the kitchen.

The garden is small, partially fenced and if you like socializing with the neighbours this is for you. The owner stated that “there is nobody walking by that looks into the garden”. However, there are on three sides neighbours, all overlooking and passing the garden so there is no privacy.

The road in front of the house is very busy at times and seems like a highway cars racing by.

As stated in the owner’s description: ‘view to the moors’. This is indeed true but only when you walk out of the little village.

From the windows in the house there is the view to the garden and a blind walls.

I would like to recommend this house to people who donot care for privacy and are willing to take the road with traffic as part of their holiday.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review, we will invest in a decent potato peeler! We will also look at re-writing the descriptions to incorporate your comments. We are also working on the garden to improve privacy and have recently employed a gardener. with some very good ideas Whilst the cottage may not be in a completely isolated location it is still in a village rather than a town or city, and for this reason we do consider it to be a quite place to stay. We are glad you enjoyed your holiday and hope to see you in the UK again.

Disappointing, damp, grubby and shabby.

  • 1 of 5

Whilst the village of Cornwood is a perfect setting for a holiday home, and 2 Rose Cottages is a beautiful building, full of potential, I really don’t feel that it is up to standard for rental as a holiday home at this present time. The building is full of damp, with mildew growing on the walls in the main bedroom, posing a mould spore risk to anyone with asthma. The mould is not contained to the main bedroom, but also the bathroom, lounge and kitchen. The property smells very damp. The bathroom is a complete nightmare, with cracked and mouldy tiles, leading to water rushing down the kitchen wall when someone has a shower.

The bedroom floors are lethal. The small bedroom has a very loose floorboard, which is dangerous for anyone, but most especially small people, and the main bedroom has several damaged floorboards, including one which has a split right down the middle, with no support, meaning – in theory – a person could fall straight through the floor, causing no end of damage to the property, and great personal injury.

The owner of the property has admitted they don’t visit the property very often and so therefore maybe aren’t aware of the current state of the rental, so I’ve taken photographs (and have sent them to the owner).

The listing states ‘plenty of on street parking on Bond street’. This is not strictly true, there is parking, but only up against a wall, and the residents of the street get very angry if you park in the space they were intending to use. There is nowhere else to park apart from against this large wall. It is not a very quiet property, we had to put up with the junior school aged child next door screaming his lungs out at all hours of the day and night (he never seems to sleep), and very loud music blaring from the cottage the other side.

The property needs a huge amount of work doing before it is up to health and safety standards, and something should be done before someone becomes very ill, or personally injured by the faults in this cottage.

All in all I would not recommend renting this property unless you enjoy smelling of damp, and starting to come down with a nasty chest infection.

I have contacted the owners with this review and they have given me their reasons for the property being in such a bad state, which isn't good enough. Damp is damp, in whatever form it takes. Not at all happy.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write this review and we are very sorry that the cottage was not up to the standard you were expecting. We do try to ensure that the cottage is above expectations and represents good value for money. The Cottage is 200 years old and is made in a different way than modern properties. It has solid stone walls and solid floors which do not have a damp proof membrane in them. It is not possible to completely eradicate damp from such a building and so we just manage it by regular maintenance. we have also fitted new windows with vents to allow the building to air. The property is cleaned before every guest arrives. most of the marks shown to us were historical and have now been covered with breathable paint. We do try to make regular visits to review the condition of the property and its contents. We agree that the tiles were in need of replacing and have arranged for a new bathroom to be fitted in October or November of this year (when it is available to us). We did not know that they had developed a leak, and had we been told during your visit we could have made repairs there and then. We have now made these repairs so our future guests can continue to use the cottage. The floors in both bedrooms are of exposed planks, many of them may be originals. These make up the character of the cottage so we did not want to replace them unnecessarily. We carry out an annual risk assessment on the whole house and whilst some of the boards move and squeak, we do not consider them to be a hazard. Parking is typical of a village. there are no paths so garden walls flank the road. there are no yellow lines and roadside parking is free for all to use. The Cottage is one of three terraced houses in a residential area and some noise is inevitable. However we have not had any other reports of noise, so can only assume you were unlucky on this occasion. We have over 200 days booked and nearly 30 reviews (including our visitors book), all of which are positive. In fact, even the guests before and after you wrote a positive review. However, we do take all reviews seriously and will look again to see if we can make any more improvements to the property or the advertising to ensure it is enjoyed by all guests.
