Louise Pearce purchased this house in 2015

Why Louise Pearce chose Polruan

Polruan and Fowey and the surrounding areas on the South Coast of Cornwall are truly magical. The South Coast is not as commercialised as some areas on the North Coast, however all areas of Cornwall are very different in their own ways, giving any visitor to the County a very special, unique and diverse experience..... come rain or shine!

What makes this house unique

Castle Keep is a real Jewel in the Crown. It is very rare to find such a superior property and in such a remarkable and enviable location as a holiday home.

When people think of Cornwall, they immediately imagine themselves by the sea and spending their time on a sandy beach or basking in the sunshine, and they want to get as close to that as possible.

Castle Keep gives you all of that and you don't even have to leave the property! You can pop down to the beach in your pyjamas if you wish to and the far reaching and uninterrupted views of the sea is a true tonic.

You really will not want to leave...

Guestbook comments from the manager

Castle Keep is in the most perfect location and the house is absolutely stunning, we really didn’t want to go home! The house is immaculate and the décor is to a very high standard, the kitchen has the “WOW” factor and the views from the dining room table are just idyllic , Which lead us to the decision to eat all our meals at Castle Keep as none of the local restaurant’s would of come close to the view Castle Keep provided! The private beach is also an added bonus (when the sea had finally gone out! For us the tide table only provided one low tide and small window of opportunity during our April stay. ). We would highly recommend hiring a boat, it made it so easy to come and go from Polruan to Fowey as many times a day as you wanted and also some lovely views and places to visit further on up the estuary, this area of Cornwall is so unspoilt – complete heaven!

All in all we had the most perfect holiday and we would not hesitate to recommend this beautiful house for a relaxing break, we look forward to our next visit.

A stunning property in a stunning location.

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in Castle Keep. An amazing property, from the first impression gained at walking through the front door and seeing the view through the window at the end of the hall. Throughout the house, the layout and decor has been thoughtfully designed to make this a very special place. There are beautiful views from the terrace and balcony, which can be enjoyed in all weathers thanks to the large windows. The exterior does not disappoint with the sea through the gate at the end of the garden. The whole family finally plucked up the courage to jump into the sea at high tide! The house was spotless and we had excellent customer service from the managing agent. We visited Fowey just over the water and made a trip to the Eden project but frequently felt no need to go out at all thanks to the beach at the end of the garden during the day and the sundowners watching the sunsets in the evening. We loved it and hope very much to be visting Castle Keep again.

It is a very special place and having your own beach and to be able to swim in the sea from the bottom of the garden is wonderful. Hope to welcome you again one day. Best Wishes Lou

Castle Keep was fantastic

  • 5 of 5

Castle Keep is a beautifully decorated property with a stunning view of the end of the estuary and Fowey. The kitchen had everything we needed. The beds were very comfortable, and each bedroom had a great view ( as did the kitchen and living rooms). We were unfortunate to have a very wet and windy week away, but the house was so comfortable that we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there despite the weather. We had thought we would not need the Arga running, but it was a godsend and made the kitchen very cosy after some wild and wet walks. The ferry to Fowey runs constantly and late enough to eat out in Fowey. Plenty of restaurants & pubs to choose from. We also made use of the discounted spa sessions available at Fowey Hall hotel, and the standard of service in the spa was very good. The garage is up a small lane and around the corner. We would recommend reversing down the lane to unpack, not try to reverse up it ( steep). All of our family group enjoyed the stay - age range 20's - 50's - 70's - its a very well laid out for a family group. Having your own bit of beach ( & sea ) is great as well - we swam a few times when the weather allowed. I would recommend this property.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much indeed for your wonderful Review and I am so pleased you had such a great stay. Sorry about the weather but great that you swam in the sea and it's very safe in the cove there. Yes reversing down the lane to unload is a good point to make, thank you. Hope to welcome you again one day. Best wishes, Lou

Superb Location

  • 5 of 5

If you're looking for a coastal holiday rental in Cornwall you'd struggle to find a property with better views than Castle Keep. Unlike Fowey it also has the benefit of the full evening sun. We found the property to be very tastefully furnished, clean and spacious and I imagine the living room fire would be a great feature during winter visits. We were very lucky with the late May weather and the terrace was perfect for sipping G&Ts whilst enjoying the views and watching the ever changing boating activity. It's refreshing to stay in a coastal village which isn't overrun with tourism but I would say the one slight negative about Polruan is that you're a bit limited if you want to eat out in the evening. We ate at the Lugger Inn on one occasion and the food was reasonable. The operating hours of the ferry and water taxi out of peak season also mean eating out in Fowey is a bit restrictive. However we were more than happy to eat in most of the time as we wouldn't have found a restaurant terrace to match the one at Castle Keep. We very much look forward to returning.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review and we are delighted you had a great stay. Some guests hire a boat which is kept on the pontoon next to The Lugger which makes eating out in Fowey a little easier and you can return to Polruan under your own steam plus it's great fun.

Fantastic views and an amazing house

  • 5 of 5

We live reasonably local and had dreamed of spending a holiday in this house. We were not disappointed! The quality of the fittings and furnishings were beyond what we had hoped for. The views were mesmerising and we spent most of the days either sitting in the house or garden or exploring the private beach and rock pools. There are many great walks along the cliffs or along the Hall Walk. We went into Fowey via the ferry which runs every 10/15 minutes. However, because we went in October, the last ferry was at 7 pm and we could therefore not go into Fowey for an evening out. We were always glad to return to the quiet streets of Polruan. Food at the Lugger was very good and worth a visit. There is complimentary use of the Fowey Hall Hotel swimming pool which proved a success with the children in the group. In summary it is a beautiful house, fabulous views, great beach and well worth the money, you will not be disappointed............. I would love to return.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your fantastic review. So appreciated. It really is a very special house. I shall pass on your comments to the Landlord of the Lugger Inn, they will be delighted. Getting over to Fowey is very easy but during the Autumn & Winter months their timetable is shortened due to early darkness. We would be delighted to welcome you back. Best wishes, Lou

Amazing Views, Quality Finishes, Perfect Get Away

  • 5 of 5

Castle Keep totally exceeded our expectations. The size and quality of this fully equipped house was perfect for our group of six (6) adults utilizing all four (4) bedrooms/4.1 bathrooms (3 En-Suite).

Three of our group were in their mid 80's, two of which have some mobility issues, and despite tricky access in getting a vehicle close to house, they had no issues. In fact they were totally content to sit and watch the boat activity in and out of the Fowey/Polruan harbor. We loved our stay so much we extended an extra day.

Be aware the roads/alleys of Polruan, Fowey and many of these Cornish villages were never built to take vehicular traffic, so be skilled at reversing, and leave your large cars at home - They simply won't fit.

In regard to booking the house and coordinating our arrival/departure from the USA, Lou was the consummate professional, yet easy going, flexible and super helpful. The whole process was very easy.

Simply put, this was a wonderful five days that I would recommend to anyone.

Wonderful Stay

  • 5 of 5

The house is amazing! Both internally and the location, there's no better way to wake up or round the day off than be looking out over the water. Everything is finished off to the highest spec and the kids thought they had joined the cast of Keeping up with the Kardashians when they saw the walk in wardrobes! Everything you could possible need is here and Polruan is a great place to stay, with 2 very good pubs and lots of friendly faces.

Great stay, great service. Will be back.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your Review and we are delighted you have had a great holiday. Polruan is a very special place and the two pubs are fantastic and the village is quirky and remote enough to get away from it all but very easy to get to all other areas of Cornwall! Fowey, located on the other side of the river has a variety of great quality pubs, restaurants, shops and art galleries giving you everything you need and more for a holiday to remember.

Polruan is a charming town that literally sits on the Fowey Estuary. Located on the South coast of Cornwall right next door to Fowey.

Built into the side of the cliff it is very typical of a traditional quaint fishing town, oozing quirkiness and character and home to some of the friendliest people you will ever meet.

Very popular with Yachting and Sailing and all manner of water sports & fishing takes place on the Estuary.

It has 2 charming little beaches off the main Quay where crabbing and fishing is popular with all ages. There are several spectacular coastal & countryside walks starting in Polruan, namely The South West Coast Path and The Saints Way - both littered with 'Vista's' and full of history, myths & legends.

There is a children’s playpark with possibly the best sea views in the UK.

The two cosy Cornish pubs; The Luggar Inn and The Russell Inn, serve fantastic home cooked local food within a warm & welcoming environment. The village shop, cafe and Post Office, less than a 5 minute walk away, gives you everything you need so you can literally shut yourself away from the World.

Should you wish to explore little lanes full of award winning restaurants & pubs, shops, art galleries, cafes and local food establishments, jump on the foot ferry from the Quay and within 2 minutes you will arrive at the enchanting and historic town of Fowey.

A lot of our guests don’t feel the need to use their car when with us, but should you wish to visit an attraction or have a drive around another part of Cornwall it is very easy to get out and explore:-

• Fowey – full of shops, art galleries and restaurants - 2 minute passenger ferry from main Quay

• The Eden Project - 25 minute drive

• Lost Gardens of Heligan - 30 minutes drive

• Charlestown – gorgeous little fishing port and where Poldark and Pirates of the Caribbean are filmed! - 15 minute drive

• Mevagissey – traditional Cornish fishing town - 35 minute drive

• Crealy Adventure Park – 35 minute drive

• Newquay – surf central - 40 minute drive

• Watergate Bay and Jamie Oliver 15 – gorgeous beaches and views – 50 minute drive

• Padstow – Rick Stein Restaurants – 60 minute drive

• St Ives – 80 minute drive

• Looe – 20 minute drive

• The Minnack Theatre, Porthcurno – 90 minute drive

• Falmouth – full of shops, art galleries and restaurants - 70 minute drive

• Truro – fabulous shopping and restaurants – 40 minute drive or 15 minutes by train from Par station which is 3 miles away

So you see, Castle Keep has something for everyone... and more.
