The Old Gendarmerie - a stunning appartment in the centre of Bonnieux

Overview

Property

Updated: 30-Nov-2016
An amazing conversion of an old Police building into a luxury apartment

From the outside this is an imposing building with a rich history of accommodating officers of French law, but as you step into the beautiful reception area, be prepared for a surprise.

This two bedroom apartment is very spacious with king, queen or twin beds, well-equipped kitchen and large bathroom. Outside there's a private balcony and shared used of the largepool - heated in Spring and Autumn.

No expense has been spared and as you'll see from the photos, the result is extremely successful. The style throughout the building is comfortable, modern and uncluttered. There is incredible attention to detail and where possible, the original features of the building have been retained and incorporated in the new design.

One of the biggest surprises is to find such a large pool area, hidden from view of the village. Again take a look at the photos to get an idea of the great views and privacy of this property.

The Region: The winding roads of the Luberon, with spectacular views, are great to explore and you'll find loads of picturesque villages (Gordes, Menerbes, Maubec) on the doorstep.

Just a short drive away there's a great Sunday morning market at Coustellet and the larger town of Apt is only 15 minutes away.

There's loads to do and see in the area; St Remy-de-Provence, famous for its Roman architecture, Les Baux with its ruined castle and unique rock formations, L'Isle sur la Sorgue, famous as an antique centre and market. Also within easy reach are Pont du Gard, Avignon with the Palace of the Popes, Marseille with its famous waterfront, the Amphitheatre at Nimes and the cultured avenues of Aix-en-Provence.

If activity is your thing, this area is perfect for climbing, cycling, mountain biking, trekking, golf, tennis and swimming.

The Village: The village of Bonnieux has a rich and varied history and is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the Luberon.

In summer the village is really popular and therefore has some great restaurants and cafés. Although not very big, it has some useful and interesting shops, including bakers, butchers, grocery, pharmacy, post office and tourist information centre. There's also a local market on a Friday.

To get there:

By Car - The village of Bonnieux lies just 10 minutes off the D900, 10 minutes east of Cavaillon.

By Air - Marseille and Nimes Airports are the nearest - approximately 50 minutes drive away

By Train - The high speed TGV service runs directly from London or Paris to Avignon, approximately 25 minutes away

Full directions, etc will be sent once you make a booking.

Breath taking Bonnieux and appartment

  • 5 of 5

The appartment was everything and more than expected. It had the feel of Provence through and through. The situation in the village was great. Handy for everything including a mid afternoon stroll from the pool side to the ice cream parlour. It was just fantastic

Fabulous get-away!

  • 5 of 5

Lovely apartment - comfortable, quiet, well-furnished, and a great lay-out - with a nice deck for breakfasts and relaxing in the evening. The pool was just as pictured. Bonnieux is charming, very walkable hill town - a variety of restaurants, bakeries, small grocery store, ATM, and two ice cream shops.

Wonderful respite in Bonnieux

  • 5 of 5

Everything was perfect with plenty of room for two couples. Best of all was a secured parking space in a tiny town with narrow streets. Close to everything in Provence, good roads and signage. Bonnieux has many restaurants in walking distance of tge apartment, small markets and a fabulous boulangerie for your morning croissant abd baguette.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your lovely comments. Bonnieux is a very special place in Provence and we have many repeat guests - people seem to be drawn back to the historic village, restaurants and market. I'm delighted to hear you enjoyed the apartment. It ticks many boxes as it has a pool, great views, parking and is a short walk from the village centre. We'd love to hear from you again if you get the chance to re-visit the Luberon.

Great apartment in a perfect location

  • 4 of 5

Our second stay in the Old Gendarmerie, and we enjoyed it every bit as much as the first. It's so convenient to be able to walk to the bakery, butcher and mini-supermarket in a couple of minutes, no need to use the car. The kitchenette is quite basic, but adequate for breakfast and lunch (which we usually had on the balcony), and Bonnieux has loads of places to eat out. The pool is a decent size, and there are plenty of chairs and loungers, and shade if you need it (we did!). We have booked through Joie de Vivre several times, and they are a pleasure to deal with.

Facilities

From the Owner

Excellent. Beautiful location in the centre of a pretty village. Amazing views from every window. Mrs F, Cheshire, UK, August 2016 This was our second visit to the Gendarnerie in Bonnieux. The accommodation was more than adequate for our needs as a base of operations for exploring the area. Mr T, Alberta, August 2016 very good - spacious, clean, well furnished and great location. Mr P, Cranbrook, Kent, July 2016 We absolutely loved our time in bonnieux. The old gendarmerie was perfect and exceptional value for money, thank you. Mr C, July 2016 Lovely appartemente and well equipped. Being greeted with a bottle of rosé is a nice touch :-) Mrs E, Frankfurt, Germany, June 2016 Incredible. We loved it. The best place we stayed on this trip (used airBNB in Paris and London and were not nearly as satisfied). we gave it a 10/10. Ms F, California, June 2016 The stay was fantastic - we all thoroughly enjoyed it. The accommodation was lovely, Bonnieux beautiful, the residents very friendly and Provence is marvellous. However, the 2.5 hours spend struggling up Mont Ventoux on my bike on the Tuesday afternoon were a little less pleasant! All in all we loved it. Dr B, Yorkshire, UK, June 2016 I had a lovely time in Provence, absolutely fell in love with the region. It was very difficult to tear myself away! The accommodation was great and conveniently located. Ms A, May 2016, Queensland, Australia Just talking about our stay in the Old Gendarmerie , the apartment was fantastic and all in all we it was our best holiday ever and that is saying something. Mr B, London, UK, April 2016 We loved the apartment and area although it was a little noisy but that's just us coming from semi rural living to a bustling town - we new what we were getting. You've been brilliant - we loved Bonnieux and we won't hesitate in using you guys again!! Mr H, Wilts, UK, August 2015
