About the Owner

I am an artist (painter) with a certain notoriety in this area, who left London and came to France with a young family in 2001. I have found galleries and a greater appreciation for my work here than I ever had in England. My children, now adult are both bilingual after completing their education in the French system.

Thoroughly enjoyed my stay in this property, it was exactly as I had expected, except that it was bigger than expected judging by the photos. I was impressed by the staircase to the mezzanine as so often they are very small and an add on, but this was actually very well done and easy to negotiate. Yes there is a beam to negotiate, but remember when you stay in the old quarter of a village in France, there are going to be some quirky affects here and there.

Location, location, location - superb, easy access to the local bus station and every other amenity you may require.

I travel only on public transport, a sole traveler and felt that the location was excellent for visiting other towns and villages in the area. I would suggest to people that this is an excellent base to visit Arles, Nimes, Pont du Gard and various other little villages in the vacinity in preference to the large towns.

Oliver was most helpful and an excellent communicator.

Central, spacious, modernized small apartment

  • 4 of 5

Short stay in mid June. This is a spacious, carefully modernized small apartment in one of the large ancient stone buildings in the centre of Uzes. Immediate access to the main market square with its superb Saturday market (and many smaller artisan markets as well). Everything is within easy reach : cafes, restaurants, galleries, shops, food stores, cinema, post office, parking. There's a public swimming pool in Summer.

Uzes is a lovely, historic town in a vibrant, beautiful region.Lots to do, places to see : local food production 9wine, olives, oil), independent painting, sculpture and pottery galleries/studios. First rate music, dance, theatre, film festivals throughout the year in Uzes and the villages around. Further afield, Nimes, Avignon, Orange. The Mediterranean is about an hour (beautiful country route through Sommieres); the Cevennes mountains probably closer. Wonderful walking directly out of Uzes into the vineyards and 'garrigue' around the town. The Gardon river is 20 minutes away with canoeing, swimming and some truly spendid walking --- along with the Pont du Gard and its museum.

Highly recommended. Oliver was easily available and always enormously helpful.

Charming apartment with bedroom loft in the heart of Uzes

  • 5 of 5

I really enjoyed having a place to call home in the middle of Uzes. The apartment has everything one needs for a pleasant holiday. The French doors made for pleasant breezes into the apartment and the ceiling fan was a bonus on the couple of days when the heat was particularly high. The apartment is within walking distance of everything: shops, restaurants, bakeries, grocery stores, post office, and the bus stop and taxi stop. The apartment was clean and had the basic cooking necessities, including the all important wine bottle opener, a hot water kettle, a coffee press and drip coffee maker. I made a couple of pleasant dinners there. The owner, Oliver, is very helpful and arranged a cab for me on my arrival in Nimes after my rental car fell through. I would definitely stay here again.

If anyone has difficulties with stairs, the bedroom loft might be a bit much to navigate, especially as the bathroom is downstairs. It makes it challenging when one is half asleep or wakes in the middle of the night and needs to use the facilities, so take the stairs with caution. The apartment is also on the third floor if you count the ground floor as the first floor, which the French do not do, so be prepared and pack light or have someone help you with your suitcases. I was lucky enough to have a kind gentleman carry my heavy case up the stairs to the apartment.

I enjoyed a number of the restaurants and shops in Uzes. There is a little gift shop just across the street and a little bit down past the clothing shops from the main street door into the apartment complex on Rue de la Republic. The ladies that run the shop were so sweet and carefully wrapped my chosen gifts for transport home. The bakery, La Nougatine, almost directly below the apartment on the ground floor on the other street, sends wafts of pleasant smells into the apartment beginning around 6am. They serve very good bakery items, sandwiches, and my favorite, pain au chocolate. My most pleasant day was spent on a wine tour with Promo Vinum. I highly recommend it. We visited four wineries in the area and had a very pleasant lunch in Chateauneuf de Papa. Joe Mclean is the tour guide and he is very knowledgeable about wine and very pleasant company. I will miss Uzes and look forward to returning there again.

Wonderful location

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for a week in this cute studio. The location is above a boulangerie (we loved the smell of baking bread and pastries in the stairwell) and a few steps from the main plaza. We were there for the two market days. It was wonderful to walk out the door and instantly be in the midst of the market. While the location is very good, the studio does have it's quirks. The bed is up a short flight of stairs to the loft. To get to the bed you need to be agile to climb over a large beam. The living room furniture is adequate but the sofas could be more comfortable. We enjoyed the restaurants and also shopping for our food and cooking. There are adequate pots and pans but the kitchen utensils should be replaced, e.g. the knives barely cut bread. These were minor inconveniences. The living area overlooks the main street and it was nice watching the shop owners and pedestrians below go about their day. Oliver was friendly and offered lots of suggestions and was very responsive to our queries.

Matisse Apartment

  • 5 of 5

The apartment is ideal for a couple who would enjoy living in the heart of a small town. We spent three weeks there and it was a wonderful hub for the Languedoc/Provence area. Nimes, Arles, Avignon, the Cevennes, the Ardeche Gorges and, of course, Pont du Garde are within an hour or two drive at the most. We loved it and wonder where the time went. The town of Uzes itself is charming. It is picturesque, and small enough to be encompassed in one good walk and large enough to contain all the amenities one could wish for as well as a museum and art galleries.

We are an old couple, but we are not frail and were able to cope with the two staircases to the flat entry as well as the stairs to the Mezzanine bedroom and a big step over a large beam before getting into bed. In fact we found it rather fun and it all enhanced our stay. Anyone with bad hips or knees would probably be better off elsewhere.

The apartment is well furnished and appointed, with a real oven as well as the usual micro-wave. The view from the living room windows offered interesting time wasting occupation. Two flights down beneath the large leafy plane trees is one of the main streets which includes market stalls twice a week.

If lucky enough to be able to return to Europe, the Matisse Apartment would be our first choice of accommodation.

Owner's Response: Delighted to receive such a positive review!. Just two small details I would like to comment on: The stall holders set up on Saturday mornings beneath the windows of the apartment, but not on Wednesdays, and though the windows look out onto the main street, they are set back from it by terraces underneath so the apartment remains quiet. Thank you again!

From the Owner

We wanted to live in this spectacularly beautiful town, make French friends, master the language and enjoy the privileged climate of this area with its wonderful food and wine.We bought apartments within the old ramparts of the town close to where we live. 'The Artist's' was a must as soon as we stepped out onto the terrace. The view over the rooftops was breathtaking. The Matisse was so full of character and romance with its magnificent beams and high ceiling. We now had units of two different sizes across the street from eachother.

Uzès, famous for its music and dance festivals, is a spectacularly beautiful small town dominated by the towers of the Duché (the château), the cathedral and the elegant Tour Fénestrelle. Built from the white limestone on which it stands, it is the perfect place to relax and lose yourself in the maze of narrow streets full of boutiques, restaurants and historic sites, or to walk in the shady river valley; inspect the remains of the Roman aqueduct and the spring which once supplied it.. The famous Pont du Gard is a few minutes away. The Uzès market stalls and small shops contain a wide variety of fresh local produce - olives, spices, fish, wine, lavender honey, cheese and provençal fabrics. Uzès is ideally situated for visiting Nîmes, Arles, Avignon, St Remy-de-Provence, the Cévennes and the Camargue. The landscape between Uzès and the Cévennes is of vineyards, olive groves and garrigue - hills covered in thyme, box and rosemary. There are villages to explore, beautiful walks, swimming and kayaking in the rivers...

BUT please try to avoid arriving on a Sunday!

In either unit you are right in the centre of the old city, and yet neither is noisy. The terrace of the two bedroom unit is a wonderful spot for a quiet aperitif or a meal in the summer months with a view of the floodlit Duché and its flag fluttering in the breeze.

It is in the historic centre - the medieval part within the ancient city walls. It is light and pleasantly furnished with a pale ochre floor and the mezzanine in parquet. Painted white throughout and decoratively furnished. The apartment is next to a bakery NOUGATINE from which delicious smells are wafted into the stair well. You can also have lunch or coffee there. The apartment is well equipped with the usual pots and pans, plates, ironing things, vacuum cleaner etc.
