About the property

Duplex apartment with terrace sleeps 4, Studio with mezzanine bedroom, sleeps 2

Luminous duplex apartment on the third floor of an 18th Century stone town house with a sunny roof terrace where you can dine under the towers of the Duché - the château of Uzès. The 'Artist's' apartment is simply furnished, decorated with original oil paintings, and equipped with a washing machine, dishwasher and wifi. A spiral staircase leads to the upper floor and terrace. The Cordeliers car park which serves the centre of town is about 250m from the apartment. It is inexpensive and reasonably secure. (First 90 minutes are free. The artist's apartment is in the historic centre and only a few steps from the arcaded Place aux Herbes, famous for its colourful Saturday market. Uzès, built from the white limestone on which it stands, is the perfect place to forget about time, relax and lose yourself in the maze of little streets full of boutiques, cafés, restaurants, and stunning architecture. From here you can explore important sites like Nîmes, Avignon, the Pont du Gard, Arles, Saint-Rémy, the Camargue and the Cévennes.

Top tourist attractions near Uzès:

Uzès itself, the Pont du Gard, the Roman Arena and Maison Carrée in Nîmes, the Palais des Papes in Avignon, the Roman theatre in Orange, the Aven d'Orgnac (a spectacular cave on an immense scale), near Barjac, the Château at les Baux de Provence, L'Asile of Sant Paul de Mausolée where Van Gogh was interned for 15 months, the beautifully wild Gorges du Gardon, the Photographic Festival throughout the summer months in Arles and its Roman arena, the medieval walled city of Aigues Mortes, the mountains and forests of the Cevennes, the Camargue...

Bathing: There is sea bathing at la Grande Motte, Grau du Roi, the wild Espiguette beach further to the West, or beside the enchanting town of Les Saintes Maries de la Mer. River bathing is popular in the Gardon at Collias, or at the Pont du Gard. The Cèze near Goudargues also provides good bathing; and warmer water than the Gardon! Uzès has a small open air swimming pool, at its quietest between noon and 2pm.

More physical!: Canoeing from Collias through the Pont du Gard, Canoeing on the Cèze, 'Acro-branches' - cables and pulleys between high trees in the Cevennes, Walking in the Garrigue, Bicycle hire is available for exploring the area more peacefully.

About Oliver Bevan

I am an artist (painter) with a certain notoriety in this area, who left London and came to France with a young family in 2001. I have found galleries and a greater appreciation for my work here than I ever had in England. My children, now adult are both bilingual after completing their education in the French system.

Oliver Bevan purchased this apartment in 2003

Why Oliver Bevan chose Uzes - Pont du Gard

We wanted to live in this spectacularly beautiful town, make French friends, master the language and enjoy the privileged climate of this area with its wonderful food and wine.We bought apartments within the old ramparts of the town close to where we live. 'The Artist's' was a must as soon as we stepped out onto the terrace. The view over the rooftops was breathtaking. The Matisse was so full of character and romance with its magnificent beams and high ceiling. We now had units of two different sizes across the street from eachother.

What makes this apartment unique

In either unit you are right in the centre of the old city, and yet neither is noisy. The terrace of the two bedroom unit is a wonderful spot for a quiet aperitif or a meal in the summer months with a view of the floodlit Duché and its flag fluttering in the breeze.

Excellent location in Uzès . A very clean and well appointed apartment and tastefully decorated.

The owner really looked after us and met us outside the city wall, advised on free parking and then escorted us to the apartment.

The bathroom is up a spiral staircase . And a lovely bonus is the rooftop courtyard, private and welcoming.

Artists Apartment : Highly recommended

  • 5 of 5

I've just spent a wonderful ten Spring days in the Artists Apartment. Exactly what I was looking for. In the centre of Uzes, it has the market, shops, galleries, Mediaeval town on the doorstep, secure parking (recommended) a stroll away, beautiful longer walks out into the immediate countryside if you want them and, beyond that, all the region has to offer.

It's on two levels and on the fourth floor which involves stairs but this (importantly) guarantees peace and quiet. The town can feel busy and the apartment is a very pleasant space to withdraw into ---- with that roof terrace in the back of the building providing a place away from it all to sit, relax, enjoy the sunshine.

It's well cared for, simply and nicely decorated (original paintings), with a good working kitchen and a generous amount of room to spread out into. Oliver is a friendly and helpful host without being in any sense intrusive, easily available at all times and happy to provide suggestions and guidance.

I recommend this apartment very highly and have already told friends about it.

Perfect location, friendly owner, great stay!

  • 5 of 5

The rooftop terrace sold us! It was so nice to sit in the sun with wine and bread and the privacy with the views is just ideal. We stayed for a week in April, and other than a few rainy days, everything was exactly as we expected and better. The artist apartment was clean, simple, and had everything we needed for cooking and lounging. We stayed with our 5 month old infant, and had a great stay. We moved to the upstairs bedroom after the first night, as the washroom is on the 2nd level and the stairs are quite noisy to navigate at night. Oliver was a wonderful host and we highly recommend his properties as we very much enjoyed our first time to Uzes. We hope to come back!

Pleasant, charming apartment in ideal location

  • 5 of 5

The Matisse property was perfect for what the two of us wanted from an apartment in this gorgeous French town. It was just as described in the listing and was clean, well-maintained, and ideally located off the main (and very pretty) square. It had all the facilities we needed to enjoy our two-week stay. Oliver, the owner, provided excellent customer service and many useful tips to enhance our enjoyment of the whole area and was a pleasure to deal with. We loved the location, near shops, restaurants, and the Sat. and Wed. markets. Adding to the character of the loft bedroom is the charming and minor challenge of avoiding bumping one's head on

the beautiful ancient beams, but one easily gets used to that. This property is to be highly recommended to anyone wanting a comfortable and perfectly situated residence in which to to soak up the atmosphere of this lovely town, to which we hope to return someday.

Owner's Response: I am very grateful for this most generous review. Although there is a fairly low beam in the mezzanine, the majority of my guests have managed to negotiate it without too much trouble!!

Perfect in every way

  • 5 of 5

When the Artist's Apartment wasn't available Oliver was kind enough to put me in the Sculptors Apartment which was perfect for me. It was spacious and quiet and just minutes walk from Place aux Herbes and other attractions and facilities in Uzes. Oliver organized drawing classes for me with the local residents and made sure I was equipped with all I needed. I didn't have a car so having the bus stop just around the corner was a bonus. Oliver has a detailed description of all the attractions and places around the area including recommendations of the best restaurants, cafes and supermarkets. I couldn't have asked for more. I would recommend this property to others planning to visit and stay in Uzes. I will definitely return. I would also recommend you check out Oliver's website - he is an amazing painter. Thank you Oliver.

A really unique and charming experience

  • 5 of 5

This little apartment in the centre of Uzes was a real charmer. It is comfortable and ideally placed to enjoy the village/market atmosphere of this pretty historic town, the region and french country life style. Markets, shops and restaurants all at your doorstep. The owner Bevan is very helpful and provides excellent local knowledge and experience to enhance your stay. A great place!!

Uzès, famous for its music and dance festivals, is a spectacularly beautiful small town dominated by the towers of the Duché (the château), the cathedral and the elegant Tour Fénestrelle. Built from the white limestone on which it stands, it is the perfect place to relax and lose yourself in the maze of narrow streets full of boutiques, restaurants and historic sites, or to walk in the shady river valley; inspect the remains of the Roman aqueduct and the spring which once supplied it.. The famous Pont du Gard is a few minutes away. The Uzès market stalls and small shops contain a wide variety of fresh local produce - olives, spices, fish, wine, lavender honey, cheese and provençal fabrics. Uzès is ideally situated for visiting Nîmes, Arles, Avignon, St Remy-de-Provence, the Cévennes and the Camargue. The landscape between Uzès and the Cévennes is of vineyards, olive groves and garrigue - hills covered in thyme, box and rosemary. There are villages to explore, beautiful walks, swimming and kayaking in the rivers...

BUT please try to avoid arriving on a Sunday!
