About Ann Lukens

Simon is from Ammanford in West Wales and Ann from Connecticut and New York, having met working in IT. They have each had many careers in between, with Simon now back in IT and Ann running a training/facilitation and conflict resolution business. Their son Tom is at Uni and soon on to other things....

Ann Lukens purchased this cottage in 1993

Why Ann Lukens chose Monmouthshire

This has been Simon, Ann and Tom's family home until now, when we have all moved (back) to city life. Bigsnap has been a wonderful, magical place to be a family, and Llandogo a warm friendly village to live in or visit, with some time now for us to once again enjoy city life (Cardiff). Time for YOU to enjoy this lovely spot...

What makes this cottage unique

Quiet, peaceful, private, Bigsnap provides a retreat from the world if you want it, but is within walking and short car trip distances to a wide range of activities, towns, and historic sites . If you are a foodie you can check out the restaurants, but also note that the granite work-topped kitchen is a great place to cook your own gourmet meals... (or even taste one of ours!) .As you drive up the valley and then up the drive, you'll see how quiet and beautiful it is!

Had a lovely cosy time whilst the weather outside was very cold! Our daughter (4) loves the squidgy puddles and mud on the track. Thanks

A perfect location to find stillness and just be

  • 5 of 5

This is a real gem of a cottage, tucked in the middle of beautiful, dreamy woods, surrounded by spaciousness, abundant wildlife and moss covered rocks. The house is exceptionally clean and very spacious. As a group we spent most of the time in the sunroom, which is a great space to star watch. If life has become too stressful, this is a perfect place to unwind and find your centre again. The owners are very responsive and welcoming. Would thoroughly recommend.

Unique house in lovely spot

  • 5 of 5

Bigsnap house is a fabulous house in a beautiful peaceful location. It is spacious but very cosy and comfortable. It is very well equipped with lots of thought given to what might be needed. The setting is amazing. We were lucky to have lovely weather so enjoyed relaxing in the garden and found it hard to drag ourselves away. There are many beautiful places to walk which were perfect for the dogs. We would love to go back and explore more of the beautiful area, hopefully for longer next time. Ann was really helpful and communicated well, thank you for the lovely welsh cakes !

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your review and also for your patience when we needed to change dates. I am so pleased that the weather enables you to really enjoy the place - we always loved just relaxing and enjoying the peace of the woods around Bigsnap. We would love to have you back anytime, so let us know when you'd like to come back - I heartily recommend bluebells time... All the best, Ann

Beautiful cottage in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We were a party of four adults and three children, and this place was absolutely perfect for us. Loads of space, huge kitchen and dining area, lovely airy bedrooms, big bathroom, complete peace and quiet except for birdsong and the noise the kids made - but no neighbours to worry about! Loads of walk/run/cycle routes on the doorstep and plenty to do nearby. I didn't want to come home. Highly recommended. Thanks again, Ann :-)

Owner's Response: Hi Katie - Many thanks for your review... we're staying for a few days ourselves and it is really amazing how quiet it is (and how loud the birds can be!)... Very glad you enjoyed your stay- hope you will come back sometime when you want a bit of peace! Ann

Wonderful property, location and owner!

  • 5 of 5

After an extremely efficient and helpful booking with great communication we were met by the owner to make sure we had everything we needed and introduce us to the house. The house was fantastically comfortable with everything you would need - definitely "home form home". The tranquility and secluded location in the woods are unique in this modern day yet suitably close to modern comforts. Loads to do and see locally but equally attractive "staying in" on the patio or conservatory and watching nature at its best - wonderful bird life and regular deer visits.

Excellent property and location

  • 5 of 5

We needed somewhere for a few days rest and relaxation with a very loud Golden retriever and two teenagers. This was more than ideal, no one around for miles, good wi-fi, and a wood sized garden for exploring and keeping Hugo happy. The house itself was immaculate and had everything we needed and loads of room to relax. We have visited the area on several occasions over the years and never got bored. I couldn't recommend the place enough if you want secluded and beautiful. Unless you are reasonably fit you do need a car but anyone who fancies a reasonably strenuous walk could get to the village and back without too much trouble.

We like to stay in different houses when we go away but would definitely consider coming back to Bigsnap :-)

Peaceful and beautiful cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is up a lane, right at the end. Stands alone, private and peaceful. Access to walks, and the blue bells starting as we left 10th April.

Dogs the loved the freedom to roam safely and freely.

The house actually is like the photos, but, its even better when you are inside it. Spacious, welcoming and everything you want, kitchen wise and comfort wise. Loved the sun room on the back, made good us of it.

Dined outside, lovely table, kept undercover and clean chairs well used.

Ann welcomed us, a lovely lady who kep a high standard of care of her property. Welsh cakes, milk and lovely flowers were awaitng us too.

Its a GEM.

Just 3 miles from Tintern Abbey, and near to many castles, abbeys and historic sites (Chepstow Castle, Tredegar House, Raglan Castle, Castle Coch amongst others!!), BIgsnap Cottage is a perfect hideaway from which to travel to see the sights of South East Wales and the Forest of Dean.

It is situated in easy reach of the Offa's Dyke Path and the Wye Valley Walk, and is set in a bluebell wood if you are lucky enough to be there in April/May!

Also nearby are many attractions for the children - Tintern Railway, Clearwell Caves, Forest of Dean Railway, Perrygrove Railway, the Maze at Symond's Yat, Puzzlewood, and many lovely playgrounds and forest sites along the River Wye. Also at Symond's Yat (and Monmouth!) you'll find canoeing facilities, and at Symond's Yat are some lovely walks and a viewing site for some of the valley's birds of prey.

For the foodies, the Michelin starred Whitebrook Restaurant (formerly the 'Crown') is only a few miles away and the Hardwick is in Abergavenny - well worth a trip - both of these need advance booking!!!. Misbah in Monmouth is a multi-award winning Bangladeshi restaurant, and the Boat Inn at Redbrook will reward you with a nice pub meal after a walk up the disused railway path from Llandogo...

Tintern has a wide range of hotel restaurants, pubs and tea rooms when you've finished at the Abbey as well as gift shops and a great rare book shop.

On a day you need to shop, Cardiff is not far by car or train (from Chepstow), and Bristol, Bath, and Hereford are also in reach....
