Overview

About the property

Plush Manor is a special place to celebrate a romantic wedding, relax with friends and family, or explore the magnificent Dorset countryside.

The house is set within 9 acres of wild and landscaped gardens, features accommodation for up to 14 people, distinctive entertaining rooms and an indoor swimming pool, as well as a 19th century church (and event space) with breathtaking views over a timeless valley.

Located in the picturesque Dorset village of Plush, the house is just 20 mins from Dorchester and 30 mins from Sherborne and the Jurassic Coast.

Part of a musical heritage, Plush Manor and the church host the annual Plush Festival, now entering its 20th year, which features word-class musicians and is regularly broadcast on BBC Radio 3.

The House

Plush Manor was built in 1785, and is a Grade II listed building and much-loved family home. Set over two floors, the house combines classic English stylings with a quirky variety of artworks, objects and literature from around the world. Look out for the family of eccentric animal statues around the house, and a 12th century stone saint in the central hallway!

The ground floor has two entrances, ancient flagstone floors and large fireplaces in most rooms. The huge kitchen is the heart of the house with doors leading out to the patio garden (complete with dining area and BBQ) and into the open hallway, perfect for receiving visitors. Formal and informal living rooms abound and the enchanting swimming pool keeps visitors active. A central sweeping staircase leads upstairs to 7 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms and a study. Large windows with beautiful views over the valley and gardens feature in every room.

The Gardens

Plush Manor is set in 9 acres of beautiful gardens and grounds, combining the best elements of a landscaped, classic English garden with a colourful wildflower meadow. Roses, wisteria, honeysuckle and clematis climb the walls and apple trees dot the way to the church.

Sweeping lawns lead up the driveway and reach down the gardens to the folly – a charming dove house and pond surrounded by flowerbeds – which is licensed for civil wedding ceremonies. The manor also has a large front field which is generally home to a family of chickens and several sheep, but can be used for additional parking for events.

St. John the Baptist Church

St. John’s was built in the Victorian era (1848), and designed by the well known architect Benjamin Ferry in the classic Romanesque style, with an impressive hammerbeam roof. Facing a timeless valley of sweeping hills, with a sunset view framed by yew trees, it enjoys a picturesque and tranquil location.

The church has a main entrance and a back door, a cherry tree which bursts into bloom during the spring and a wild graveyard. The front lawn is immaculately tended and fringed with a hedgerow separating it from the surrounding fields. It is only a few minutes walk across the garden and even closer to the parking area.

Deconsecrated for 30 years, the church was restored and given new life to the community in the 1990s, and is now a concert hall and event space.

Wedding & Parties

The church is the ideal location for wedding receptions, celebrations and parties. This historic and atmospheric space can be tailored to host dinners and table layouts of all sizes, and for parties and dancing with a stage at the back for bands and DJs.

Long tables can seat around 100 guests, with round tables comfortably seating 60.

Filming

This beautiful building also makes an ideal film and tv location. Please contact us to discuss pricing & details.

Ceremony Options

The Drawing Room is an elegant space for a ceremony with up to 20 guests. French doors open onto the kitchen courtyard, and the windows look out over the garden.

The Folly is a beautiful 17th century dove house, with a small pond in front and romantic borders on either side – the long sweeping lawn towards the folly creates the perfect entrance for the bride.

The Church serves as a unique and spectacular setting for celebrations. Just a short walk across the gardens from the house, it is framed by yew trees and the sweeping hills of an untouched Dorset valley.

Converted into a flexible space that can host dinners, DJs, bands and dancing, it even has a pulpit you can use for wedding speeches! Outdoor fire pits, tents and bars can also be set up in front of the church for added festivities.

Plush Manor offers an idyllic retreat for friends and family to enjoy holidays, gatherings or special events. Enjoy the charm and tranquillity of the house, or use it as a base to explore the Dorset countryside.

Winter Weekends

Warm and inviting, Plush Manor makes a perfect retreat for a winter weekend. With large fireplaces, comfortable sofas and inspiring interiors, a huge kitchen to cook roasts, ancient hills for bracing walks and the perfect country pub – The Brace of Pheasants – for a drink on the way home. Come to Plush for family gatherings, winter sporting weekends or to get away from it all.

The house can be rented at select times during the winter and festive season, including Christmas and New Year – with accommodation for up to 14 people and ample space for dining and entertaining.

Stunning, peaceful, beautiful and very special.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week. A party of 12 to celebrate a 70th birthday. Ages varied from 13 - 75.

Every member of the group had an amazing time. The house was perfect. The drive through beautiful Dorset countryside gives you an idea of the treat that is in store. The house is situated in a stunning, peaceful part of rural Dorset, with great walks, a good pub and unspoilt views on the doorstep.

The house itself was perfect. Big enough that the group was not on top of one another, yet cozy and several great areas for everyone to get together. We all had breakfast together in the kitchen, and spent many an evening in the dining room sat around the large table playing games. No light pollution makes for great star gazing in the evening.

A large patio and BBQ sheltered/covered area was great to cook on and enjoy the evening sun.

The grounds are great to explore, croquet on the lawn, tennis court, the pool etc.. The kids loved to explore and hide whilst the parents found a sun trap to while away the afternoon.

The many bedrooms are comfortable, quiet and everything you could wish for is provided.

The owners offered great communications and we were met on arrival to talk us through things.

I really cannot recommend Plush Manor enough. The house contains so much art, interesting features, history and architecture that you can easily spend a day just wandering around looking at things. Sitting in the snug, with the fire and flicking through a book was a true pleasure. It felt like a privileged to be able to enter this world for a week. We spent the week saying things like 'this would be perfect for Christmas, or another family gathering'. We would definitely return and look forward to it.

I would recommend looking at the website for Plush as this gives more details and shows the House in its true majesty ( plushmanor.com ).

There are many things to do near by; Kimmeridge, Cerne Abbas, the coastal path, but it is difficult to drag yourself away from the house.

We loved it. Had a great week and cannot recommend the House enough. The other comments in the visitors book also reflected this view.
