Overview

Property

Updated: 25-Sep-2016

The Shippen can be booked online from the page: http://www.theshippenfowey.co.uk/

The Shippen is a pretty, stone-built, holiday cottage set in the tranquil historic town of Fowey, Cornwall.

The cottage is one of a small cluster of barns nestling in the heart of two and a half acres of Lawhyre landscaped gardens.

Completely surrounded by fields, yet only a short walk to Readymoney Beach, this secluded cottage offers a relaxing self-catering holiday location in one of Cornwall's prettiest coastal towns.

The Shippen is a detached single story Cornish barn sympathetically renovated into a cosy cottage. It has thick stone walls, exposed beams and central heating providing a homely setting all year round. The cottage boasts a large, bright open plan lounge, kitchen and dining area, a bathroom and two bedrooms sleeping up to four.

Outside, the cottage has its own individual private garden with lawn, hedge and stone walls - offering a secluded and safe space for both children and dogs. The beautiful flower and shrub borders, gravel patio and garden furniture make an idyllic setting to enjoy the lovely views of the countryside.

The Shippen overlooks open fields at the head of a pretty wooded valley leading to the beach at Readymoney Cove, a gentle 10 minute stroll through trees and wild flowers.

Brochures, maps, guidebooks and information on the locality are provided in the cottage.

Up to two dogs are welcome at The Shippen to accompany you during your stay. The Shippen is listed on the Dog Friendly page of My Favourite Holiday Cottages, a useful resource for dog owners trying to find the ideal cottage.

The Lounge

The triple aspect lounge area has a 37" flat-screen colour TV with Freeview HD, WiFi, comfortable sofas, coffee tables, dining table and chairs, magazines, books and games and central heating. The sofas convert to a comfortable double bed, offering alternative sleeping accommodation to the twin bedroom, which is accessed via the main bedroom. There is a patio door that leads to a pleasant seating area with lovely open views.

The Kitchen

Fully fitted and well-equipped with a washing machine, fridge freezer, electric oven with ceramic hob, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, kettle, crockery, cutlery and utensils.

Bedrooms

There are two cosy, bright bedrooms, bedroom one is a double, the second bedroom is a twin (see below) and is accessed via bedroom one. Each room has good quality linens and ample storage space.

Bathroom

The bathroom has a bath with shower over, washbasin and WC.

The Garden

In addition to its own private front garden and fenced dining terrace overlooking open fields, The Shippen is set in well-maintained landscaped gardens, shared with other holiday cottages. This includes a children's playground (a great way to enable them to make friends), barbeque area, and clothes dryers.

*A large parking area is available at the cottage.

Quiet, well equipped, dog friendly cottage.

  • 5 of 5

We (me, my husband and dog) had a very relaxing stay at The Shippen. We found the cottage to be clean, well maintained and well equipped. The outside area was great for eating outdoors and relaxing in the sun. We found the location to be excellent- far enough from the town to be quiet but within easy walking distance of Fowey to take advantage of the shops, bars and restaurants. There were lots of lovely walks in the vicinity, including through woods, along cliffs and to beaches. We would have no hesitation in recommending The Shippen. Thank you, Julie.

Wonderful cottage, superb location

  • 4 of 5

The cottage exceeded our expectations. Everything we needed was to hand, beautifully decorated and very sympathetic to the period features of the dwelling. Perfect enclosed garden for our dog, felt safe and secure for our girls (the small park area was a bonus) and great to sit outside enjoying the sunshine watching them play. They loved the quirky nature of their bedroom. Around the corner from a fab woodland walk, leading to a beautiful cover. Perfect, relaxing holiday

Beautiful Fowey

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely lovely. Cottage is equipped with everything you need for a lovely time. Brilliant position (even though the hill's a killer!) and membership to the spa a lovely added bonus. Booked for 2016 even before we left.

A great holiday venue and a great holiday!!

  • 5 of 5

This is our 4th year at The Shippen and it never disappoints (unlike the weather). The cottage is clean, well-equipped and comfortable. Set well back from the road in a gated property with its own private grade space there is no road noise and we can let the kids play without worry. The footpath down to Readymoney Beach is a great bonus feature too. A great cottage in wonderful Fowey. We will be back!

Peaceful Cornish Cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was immaculate on arrival with every facility required.

Positioned just outside Fowey with easy walk to the beautiful Readymoney beach and the coastal footpath made this an ideal location - great walks from the cottage - stunning area.

The cottage has a nice private garden ideal for sunbathing and the added bonus of use of the swimming pool/ spa just a short walk away made the whole holiday a wonderful experience that I will repeat very soon.

Location

Activity and Interests

The town of Fowey has a unique unspoilt ancient charm which holds a special fascination for visitors of all ages. Fowey is a very special place, once the home of Daphne du Maurier, the town itself is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Fowey has much to offer with an attraction for everyone; families, walkers, sailors and dog lovers alike are drawn to the natural harbour, stunning views over the river, Fowey estuary, beautiful beaches and coves of the south Cornwall coast.

If the many walks, beautiful coves, stunning scenery and breathtaking panoramic views Fowey has to offer are not enough to keep you occupied during your stay, some of the best attractions Cornwall has to offer are literally a short drive away - The Eden Project, The Lost Gardens of Heligan, and The Monkey Sanctuary to name but a few.

Things To Do Around Fowey:

Here in this beautiful part of Cornwall, there are plenty of things to do, places to visit, activities to experience - whatever the weather.

Walking:

We are able to recommend a variety of stunning walks around this area, Fowey is an ideal place for walking whether you are a keen walker or just enjoy leisurely strolls. Much of the coastline belongs to the National Trust and offers stunning views of the coast as well as some rigorous and invigorating walks.

Nature trail:

The area is designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is an environmental haven for plants, flowers and wildlife. Guests are able to watch the local wildlife from the comfort of their private gardens, or stroll around the nearby footpaths and country lanes to see the carpets of native wild flowers, fine trees, rare and exotic plants.

Golf:

The Championship golf course on the cliffs at Carlyon Bay is at once beautiful, dramatic and challenging. Stretching along the coastline towards the port of Par, the course offers 6,500 yards of the most stimulating golf in Cornwall, a comfortable club house and an extensive pro shop. So whether you're an individual, part of a golf society or a business looking to organise a corporate golf event, there's no better place to play the game than Carlyon Bay.

Sports and Leisure:

Of course the main attraction of the Fowey Estuary is the sailing. Competitive sailing is arranged throughout the year and attracts sailors as well as spectators. Fowey Regatta is the highlight of our season and provides the centre point in the sailing calendar. Private boat hire is available and sailing and canoeing lessons are also available as well as diving lessons should you be brave enough. Further information regarding sailing, sailing events and mooring can be obtained from our Fowey Harbour Office.

Whatever you want to do, most things are available within a short drive. Within a few miles of this area you can find riding stables, swimming, and surfing. For those who still wish to keep fit whilst on holiday we have an excellent Leisure Centre with squash, badminton and tennis courts, trampoline and table tennis facilities and during the summer months a heated, outdoor swimming pool.

Bird-watching and Wildlife:

The Fowey River threads its way through a picturesque wooded valley - the ideal spot to explore in a boat or canoe hire in the town. Then you can row or paddle your way up the river exploring the wealth of lush woodland and wildlife. The further up this peaceful creek you get, the more you notice the abundance of birdlife. All manner of winged creatures, from the garden birds in the wooded valley to the sea and estuarine wildlife of the river itself, can be seen if you stay quiet and patient.

Dogs Welcome:

"Doggy Heaven!" Your dog is welcome at the Shippen, with beautiful sandy beaches, wide open spaces and scenic coastal path. Fowey and the surrounding area is a delight for any dog, whether you are a keen walker or just enjoy leisurely strolls, you will find that many of the shops, cafes and pubs in the town are dog friendly. Check the Fowey Beaches page to see which or when local beaches will permit dogs.

8 great beaches in and around Fowey

Readymoney Cove: A small sandy cove close to the mouth of the River Fowey, just a 10-minute walk from The Shippen.

Par Sands: A big wide sandy beach with plenty of car parking.

Polkerris: The beach here is pretty much part of the harbour in the tiny fishing village of Polkerris.

Polridmouth Cove: This is a small sandy cove nestling in the lee Gribben Headland.

Whitehouse: Close to the Town centre, the beach (which disappears at high tide) has a sea water paddling pool for those who want to roll their trousers up to cool down.

Polruan Quay: Another beach that disappears at high tide, best reached by ferry from Fowey as parking on the Quay is limited.

Lantic Bay:Well worth the trek, head east from Polruan to the Pencarrow Headland below which lies this small bay.

Lansallos Beach:A nicely sheltered beach and, because it is less known than other, is often quiet even in season.
