About Daphne de Vries

Solveig was born in Cape Town of Norwegian heritage where she grew up and was educated. After their marriage the Martin's moved to Johannesburg where their two sons were born and raised. Solveig started her successful Wearable Art business at the V&A Waterfront whenr they returned to Cape Town in 1992.

Ian was born and raised in the Helderberg region. After their marriage Ian worked as a Sound Engineer at EMI in Johannesburg. He recorded dozens of hit records and worked with famous recording artists, later becoming a director of EMI.

After suffering cardiac infarction he left the recording industry to start his own Acoustic Design business designing, building and installing numerous Recording Studios around the country.

Both Solveig and Ian are passionate about photography, nature and the outdoors. They've traveled overland throughout Africa, South America and Central America camping in their 4x4 campervan.

Daphne de Vries purchased this house in 1999

Why Daphne de Vries chose Mountainside

They both grew up in the area and have happy memories of the good times spent in Gordon's Bay during their youth. On returning to the Cape they settled in Gordon's Bay, their favourite town in the Helderberg, surrounded by mountains, the stunning views, safe bathing beaches and small town atmosphere.

The Cardamom House was bought on an auction because of its location. It started life as a rondavel and grew up into this unique house with its excellent position and the best sunsets you'd find anywhere to relax with a sundowner.

What makes this house unique

Location, location, location; a favourite phrase of estate agents. We built this wonderful home with it's unique architecture in one of the best locations in Gordon's Bay for it's stunning view and shelter from the South Easter wind. Close to everywhere you'd want to visit while in the Cape.

south africa 2017

  • 4 of 5

our stay was part of a 3 week holiday touring South Africa the final 10 days being spent at Cardamom House in Gordons Bay. This is a very picturesque and unique house very well equiped and in a wonderful location. the views are superb and sundowners are wonderful on the balcony . Plenty of room and I cannot thing of anything that is missing. Highly recommended with only one drawback. This house is built on a steep slope and can only be accessed by using the many steps. People with limited mobility would have difficulty, in particular the steps down the side of the house are made of rough stone and are uneven making the trip up and down to the beach and local resturant needing care. This is the one and only critisism that can be made. A wonderful house

Superb property

  • 5 of 5

The property is exactly as shown in the photos. We found it hard to tear ourselves away from the stunning views over the harbour from the patios. We loved the drive along the stunning R44 coastal road with its beautiful beaches. The friendly owners and manager went out of their way to make sure our stay was perfect in every way.

An unforgettable Cape experience

  • 5 of 5

We were lucky enough to stumble on this beautiful home on our recent trip to Cape Town.

What was supposed to be a week long stay turned into 6 weeks the moment we saw the house, I absolutely love the Earthy aesthetic of the home

With spiral staircases and stunning views of the harbor from the bright and warm balconies.

I appreciated the knowledge and advice of the hosts, they are good natured

down to earth people who really went the extra mile to make us feel at home.

The Cardamom House is truly unique and i would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a tasteful, homely atmosphere in Gordon's Bay.

WOW.....what a fantastic place to stay :-)

  • 5 of 5

WOW.....what a fantastic place to stay in. We were super excited when we first booked the house and knew it would be great. But when we arrived at Gordons Bay and our eyes caught the sight of the house it is difficult to describe our impression, simply beautiful.

The garden and the interior has so much soul and art details that we felt home instantly. The thought of spending our holiday here was just great!....and what a view from the porch(es).....

In addtion the location is is highly recommendable, 1 minute walk to Bikini Beach (not large but with quality), 10 minute walk to the second and much larger Beach (many restaurants /bistro's), 45 minute drive to Cape Town, 30 minute drive to the various wineyards (highly recommended!!!!!!!)

One thing is for sure, this was not our last time visiting this wonderful place.

Fabulous property which ticked all the boxes

Property exceeded all expectations for a holiday rental . Beautiful setting, spacious and tastefully decorated, with all home comforts included. A great base for exploring the unspoilt western cape. We enjoyed every moment of our stay and can highly recommend Cardamon house.

Gordon's Bay is perfectly situated to visit all the wonderful attractions Cape Town has to offer.

The Cardamom House is located at the start of Clarence Drive, voted the Best Coastal Scenic Drive in the World. Clarence Drive takes you to the seaside villages of Rooi Els, Pringle Bay, Betty's Bay and Kleinmond en route to Hermanus, you may be lucky and even spot whales!

Near Betty's Bay you can visit the Harold Porter Nature reserve and enjoy the splendour of the Cape's Floral Kingdom or hike in the mountains. Also at Betty's Bay is the Stoney Point Penguin Breeding Colony. The African (or Jackass) Penguin's breeding colony is one of two shore based breeding grounds in South Africa. The nesting burrows can be accessed via a wooden boardwalk which also prevents damage to the nesting sites. Sharing the venue are the endangered Whitebreasted Cormorant, the vulnerable Bank Cormorant and the Hyrax, better known as a Dassie or Rock Rabbit.

The Helderberg Nature Reserve and the Steenbras Nature reserve are also within 20 minutes drive. Gordon's Bay is located on the edge of the Kogelberg Biodiversity Reserve, a World Heritage site with over 2000 species of wild flowers.

Close by is Stellenbosch, Franchhoek and the Cape Winelands with their excellent wines , cuisine and beautiful settings.

The V&A Waterfront, Table Mountain Cableway, Cape Town city, the Cape Peninsula and the Cape of Good Hope Nature reserve at Cape Point are all within an hours drive.

Gordon's Bay has two harbours! Within walking distance is the Gordon's Bay Old harbour. A yacht and fishing harbour with a popular pub and restaurant, The Tavern, and the upmarket Harbour Lights restaurant. The Blue Flag Bikini beach and The Naval Collage are here too.

The village centre is a short walk away along the seaside beneath protected Milkwood trees. Here you'll find the Post Office, convenience stores, coffee shops, a book shop, gift shops and more pubs and restaurants as well as a safe bathing beach.
