Overview

About the property

Charming cottage in village with sea view to Amalfi coast, 15 min drive to beach

Casa Rosa is in a very quiet and traditional village surrounded by countryside and only 15 mins drive to the nearest sandy beach. It is over 300 years old and was once part of a large palazzo. It has been sympathetically restored to provide both character and modern living with outside sitting/sunlounge space. It is warm and cosy in the colder months whilst being bright and airy in the warmer months. It sleeps 4 people offering 2 double bedrooms, 2 shower rooms, spacious open plan sitting room/kitchen/dining area open to the rafters with white painted wood ceilings, terracotta brick floors and open log fire. It is an 'upside down' house so the living room and kitchen are on the first floor to make the most of the sea view from the balcony. One of the double bedrooms with ensuite shower room is also on this floor. Through the kitchen arched windows is the wood and glass balcony seating 4 people for al fresco eating with a lovely sea view across to the Amalfi coast. There is a courtyard garden which catches the midday sun with table and chairs on the first floor. There is a private stone walled and fenced garden on the ground floor with pot plants and sunloungers. There is a further double bedroom on the ground floor with french doors leading into the walled garden. It has rustic charm with a twist of shabby chicness. The cottage is a perfect base to explore the local area and further afield or just to relax and enjoy the location of this traditional and friendly village in this beautiful part of Italy. It is on a very quiet lane which leads to the historic hamlet of San Cono and around the corner onto another lane which leads down to Agropoli which is only a 15 mins drive with its beaches, marina, castle and town. There is a good restaurant in the upper village (less than 10 mins walk or a few mins drive). The village of San Martino has 2 cafes, grocery shops, butchers, pharmacy and pizzeria. The next village of Rocca Cilento is 600m above sea level and offers the most stunning views as far as the eye can see. Here is the convent of San Francesco not long ago restored where there is a pizzeria in the summer months and they often have concerts throughout the year. Around this area are several footpaths across the olive groves and through the Cilento National Park. You may be lucky enough to see a family of wild boar, falcons, owls, frogs and so much more. The array of wild flowers in the spring is spectacular including rare orchids. Each season offers something special. Take a drive deep into the mountainous Cilento National Park and see the Calore gorge region which is quite spectacular.

There are plenty of historic sites to visit such as the 3 magnificent Greek temples at Paestum which is only 20 mins away. The Roman sites at Pompei and Herculaneum are 75 mins drive or train. The active volcano of Mount Vesuvius is 90 mins drive. The Roman city of Velia is 40 mins by car.

The beautiful Amalfi coast drive begins at Salerno which is 60 mins drive and continues to the bustling Amalfi town with its mosaic fronted cathedral, Positano with it's winding lanes and Ravello with a stunning view high above the sea and classical concerts at Villa Rufolo from March to Dec. Small ferries run from Salerno to Amalfi from April to Oct. In July and August they run from Agropoli to the Amalfi coast and Palinuro in the south. Buses also run from Salerno railway station to the Amalfi coast.

The Cilento has it's own stunning coastline and from Santa Maria di Castellabate to Acciaroli is well worth a drive.

There is a Thalassa Spa in San Marco di Castellabate which is 25 mins drive where you can enjoy a choice of treatments or just follow 'the sea path' through the various pools, saunas and steamrooms.

About Vanessa Hawes

Richard and I are from the south of England. Our passion is restoring old properties both in the UK and Italy. We also have a farmhouse of our own 5 mins from the village which we have restored.

Vanessa Hawes purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Vanessa Hawes chose Cilento

We bought Casa Rosa in 2007 as a ruin and through the neglected ruin we could visualise a light and spacious homely cottage. The locals are delighted that it has been restored and tell us they remember when it was last lived over 20 years ago! The village is like going back in time where life is slower and simpler. Most of the locals have lived here all their lives, have goats, donkeys and a plot of land to grow vegetables, offer their time to say hello and are always there to help if you need them. We sold the cottage to a charming American family in 2016 and they have asked us to manage the property for them.

What makes this cottage unique

The history behind the property is very interesting. It was once part of a larger Palazzo which, it is believed, was a convent. It has since been divided into separate properties. Laureana Cilento was once covered in laurels - hence the name. We like the simplicity of life in this area. It instantly makes you feel calmer and enjoy what nature has to offer. The closeness to the sea and the fresh air as soon as you walk out the door make you feel alive!

Italian Charm Villa

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent a week at Casa Rosa. A warm welcome upon arrival was given from Vanessa, our local host. She was great with providing directions and suggestions as well as answered any questions we had throughout our stay. This spacious and beautiful villa has stunning views of both the countryside and sea, and offers amenities of home. The quiet neighborhood made it easy to relax on the deck with a glass of wine and watch the sunset or read a book in the private terrace. Casa Rosa is only a short drive to shops, winery, buffalo farm, beach, restaurants and more. Easy and fun to shop at the local market and prepare a meal – everything you need to cook is provided and a dishwasher allows for easy clean-up. In addition, the Laureana Cilento location made it easy for day trips to Pompeii and the city of Amalfi

Quiet and very comfortable accommodation

  • 5 of 5

We spent 2 comfortable weeks at Casa Rosa which has recently been renovated to a very high standard. It has 2 good sized double bedrooms, both with modern en-suite and very comfortable proper double beds, not two singles pushed together. The bedrooms are situated on two levels served by a spiral staircase, beneath which is a good place to discreetly store luggage which in other accommodations we have found lacking.

The spacious living area is a combined sitting room and kitchen that leads out onto a balcony with table and chairs for sunny days to have a meal and wine. There is also a dining table in the well equipped kitchen area that includes a dishwasher. The comfortable sitting area has two settees, a modern TV and importantly includes a good wi-fi.

Casa Rosa is located in Laureana Cilento which I would describe as a nice little village with lovely views, very easy parking and great access to local towns (Agropoli, Torchiara, San Martino, etc), a small port (in season ferries to Capri) and sandy beaches. When visiting archaeological sites we preferred to use the train with free and easy parking in the adjacent road to the railway station. Train travel is cheap and fairly regular. The archaeological sites of Paestum (7 minutes), Pompeii (about 40 minutes), Herculaneum (about 50 minutes) and Naples (about hour and half). We preferred Herculaneum which was less crowded and better preserved and presented.

Because of the location, a car is essential. We flew into Naples airport and rented a car from Europcar which, together with other rental companies, Avis, etc. has a free shuttle to and from the airport. The drive from there to the house is no more than 2 hours. However, Vanessa and Richard, who are excellent hosts, can recommend a local taxi pick-up and drop-off for the airport, combined with hire car rental.

We would highly recommend Case Rosa as a very comfortable and spacious place to stay.
