Rare forest house (1290ft², bedroom 485ft²), untouched nature with swimming lake

Overview

Property

Updated: 23-Aug-2016
Experience the famed douceur de vivre (“sweetness of life”) of Gascony in luxury

RELAX

The rare position of the house on a large clearing amidst forests and surrounded by unspoilt landscapes flush with wildlife - but in close reach by car of everything one needs or wants to see in this beautiful French region rich in tradition and history - makes it an ideal spot for nature lovers, sporty or even creative people.

HIDE-AWAY

Well…and not to forget the ones who long for the most relaxing, invigourating, lazy, stress-free, secret location, a place with no demands, only peace, crystal air and bird song – but buzzing life and people only ever when you feel like it.

VILLAGE

Lugane is situated only 2.5 km from the ancient village of Sos (yes, really) in an interesting corner of the Lot-et-Garonne (Gascogne, Aquitaine), which reaches into other, adjoining regions. The whole area and in particular this village has strong Roman roots. This is the region of D’Artagnan of the Musketeers, Foie Gras and Armagnac.

REGIONS

The endless, little populated forests of the region Landes with its Atlantic coast beaches stretching all the way from Bordeaux to beyond Biarritz, begin only a few minutes away.

In the other direction you find yourself already after another few minutes drive amongst the rolling hills of the Gers (the “Tuscany” of France) scattered with tiny, ancient villages and farms, chateaux and far-reaching views over vineyards and sunflower fields - and in clear weather the Pyrenees.

The great mountains of the Pyrenees are only about 1.5 hours away, even the Mediterranean coast only about 3 hours. So, Lugane is centrally positioned amongst contrasting regions of great beauty and history, the sea, the mountains…and several airports of your choice.

The fertile greens of this rural region are untouched, at times as if in another century. There are not many tourists, so people are still friendly with an endearing, old-fashioned touch of politeness elsewhere lost.

NATURE

Past our forests there are many vineyards, rape seed fields blooming in early spring, then sunflowers everywhere for weeks with falcons circling in the sky. There are frog concerts down the path at the lake down one of our forest paths, where one can also watch the odd shy crane before a refreshing swim.

The nightingales everywhere sing until late in spring before the hot peaceful summers with lush and vibrant nature. Warm and long colourful autumns are scattered with an abundance of mushrooms and edible chestnuts, the weather often pleasant until the end of October. The really cold weeks of winter are few and crisp but quiet and contemplative, lovely by the fire.

Throughout most of the year a myriad of birds can be heard in the forest and fields, cuckoos and owls during day and night, shy wild boar roam around the forest in the night and deer are grazing in front of the windows at dawn or dusk.

PEACE…

…or Buzz …There is so much choice. During the whole summer the region is brimming with life, the true joie the vivre of the French and everybody is enjoying conviviality, lots of good rustic food and wine during the still upheld tradition of having summer village fêtes accompanied by countless events and performances. Also tiny Sos manages to have its own fête plus a big producer’s market every Wednesday evening for six weeks, with live music, long, long tables where all the locals gather for hours to talk animatedly and enjoy the wine and local delicacies from the stands around the market place.

So you have the choice to undertake a vast variety of excursions and activities or sports, visit fêtes or performances, concerts, eat out in restaurants – or to retreat to the tranquillity of your spot in the forest, unwinding – or recovering – away from it all.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We are very sad to be leaving our idyll in the woods, we have had a wonderful stay here. Most of all we'll miss - 1. Our daily walk & swim in the lake with only the woodpeckers & crickets to disturb the silence! 2. The views from each window over the flowers and into the woods. 3. The smells of hot pine and garlic snails. 4. Swinging in the hammock listening to the crickets chirp. 5. Six o'clock dinner time when the geese & chickens waddle over to say hello. 6. Jeanneau the dog bouncing towards us as we return 'home'. 7. Listening to Babette's amazing stories of the local area. 8.Visiting the local night markets & bull "dancing" at Gabarret. 9. Relaxing in the bath watching the clouds roll by. And finally the night sky & owls' song. Such a perfect place - thank you for all your help and hospitality. We hope to see you again!

The most perfect holiday rental with the most welcoming hosts

  • 5 of 5

Well "Lugane" is quite simply the best holiday rental we have ever been to. This lovely woodland house is absolutely beautifully decorated with antique furniture and the fabulous artwork of the owner. It has everything you could possibly need for a home from home experience along with the special touches that Babette, the owner, adds to make it homely and welcoming. The woodland garden is perfect for the sun or shade loving as it has lovely open spaces for the sun worshippers among us and also many trees to provide shelter for those who prefer a cooler place to relax. The kids loved that the garden was spacious enough for football tournaments and had many places to explore and hide in. The most amazing thing about this property though has to be the lake. Immense, and breathtakingly beautiful it was the place that we spent so much of our holiday. The water was clear, warm and so inviting that our six year old who is very nervous around water not only got in on the first day but also was confidently swimming around by day three. I am sure that there are not many holiday rentals where you can swim in a private, totally secluded lake whilst watching the deer running across the hills that frame it....amazing! The hosts are lovely and are on hand if anything at all is needed yet keep distance enough that you also feel as though you have your own space. The area is full of picturesque villages and beautiful scenery. The villages of Fources and Larressingle are definately worth visiting. We cannot recommend this rental enough, is is perfect, the only problem is that you will never want to leave. Thankyou Babette and Effi for a wonderful stay in your amazing home, See you next year hopefully!!!

Owner's Response: Thank you! It was really nice having all 5 of you here! It was amazing to see how your lovely little son took to the water after such a short time - but then I always feel it's got a bit of magic here. "Little doggy" Jeanneau is missing him - and all of you a lot. A la prochaine...

Remote and peaceful but beware you may not get your deposit back

  • 2 of 5

Positives: peaceful, remote, rural location. Spacious house, antique and quirky interior. Close to a pretty village with bistro. Supermarket 15 mins away. The house stayed cool downstairs.

Negatives:

Dog: The owner has a great dane which roams freely round the garden. Great if you love great danes but It was slightly skittish. It stood on our 6 year old son’s foot on the first day and he was in a lot of pain.

Deposit: 1 month since departing the property and we have still not received our deposit back. The owner did not mention anything at the time but 4 weeks later when I chased up the deposit she decided she is claiming £50. There were 2 old plastic garden chairs which were very brittle as they had been left out in the strong sun. They slightly cracked when my partner leant back on them. We discussed this with her at the time and as they were so old there was no mention of us being charged for them.

Lake: The lake was wonderful for adults, but our 2 children aged 6 and 8 were not so keen. Dangerous to get in as the owner had placed 3 concrete steps in the water, these were very slippy. Clay soil at the bottom so very murky which our daughter did not like. The children could only stand up in an area of 1m x1m, and the rest was very deep, so not good for children to play in for a long period of time, like they can in the sea or swimming pool. No flat area to lay or sit near the lake, just a small area of grass on a slope. There was also a bench. As it was 30 degrees when we were there it was too hot to stay at the property all day with no water to cool down. We explored the surrounding area and found some great swimming pools, this didn't seem to go down well with the owner who asked if we “prefer chlorine”.

Facilities: No washing machine. It says on the website that the owner will do the washing. We asked her to do 1 load but didn't feel comfortable asking her again. It would be better to have a machine in the property. The kitchen was very well equipped with various bits of equipment like toast maker, electric oven but many of these had uk plugs with no adapters available. It made the kitchen feel very cluttered with little worktop space. Several lights upstairs in the bedroom but most either didn't work or didn't have continental plugs.

Very hot upstairs in the bedroom. Babette, the owner, an interesting lady and helpful when we asked for information but it did feel abit like we were living in her house with a list of rules to comply with.

Owner's Response: DEPOSIT WAS REFUNDED! Oh dear! I suppose it had to happen one day: straight 5 stars from all other guests, and then one leaves happy with an excellent guest book entry (see "About" & Guestbook comments) like all others - but then decides not to pay a minimal amount for 2 completely broken garden chairs (not old nor brittle but UV protected) and pays back instead with a charming review! Automatic refunds of site stopped working and deposits are held by OD site! Guest was informed already after 1.5 weeks. No matter how welcoming, beautiful and tranquil (not remote) everything is, modifying things a bit might help to find something...but all the other reviews put this one in persepctive. A great friendship between a boy and a dog has become "a painful foot" - forgotten they were playing after minutes about which parents were happy as he lost fear of dogs which was even mentioned it in guest book. Too many kitchen appliances (?) 4 m worktop & kitchen table for 6 is not enough space, hm. All guests had their washing done immediately when they asked; leaving washing out somewhere on lawn by the line without a word looked like washing taken down; upon guest's return and clarification an immediate offer to do washing was declined. Missing adaptors could have been replaced had I known, guests before had taken them by mistake. All the lights worked when checked. There is access to lake with no steps right beside them, this guest said: its on the right track. Something changed. Yes, there might be clay on the bottom of a natural lake advertised as such, other ladies have done beauty packs with it! There is a very large bank by lake, area by water & flat area by bench in shade with grass and path nicely cut for guests ...please see other reviews with all their excitement about the lake, adults and children frolicking and somersaulting in the water all day! The only real rule is no smoking in the bedroom. Apart from that there are only 10 points of advice re how to deal with gas bottle, fire danger in the forest while barbecuing, why no bleach with septic tank, water and antiques, etc. Others commended the house for keeping cool in the heat, French tradition is to keep the windows closed...for open windows large fan is supplied! Cooling down: the children enjoyed the large inflatable pool I provided a lot, screeching with joy, so their doggy-friend (only comes outside with me) even had to come and check if they're ok! Let's remember the fun, our drinks & laughs!

Lugane Sos - Paradise in the forest

  • 5 of 5

We had a really lovely time here. Babette was the perfect host and the gite was lovely, clean and comfortable. Upon our arrival, Babette and her family made us feel very welcome with a little soiree .Greatly appreciated the eggs from Babette's chickens and the fruit and wine The lake is beautiful and the water was still warm enough in September to have a swim.

The gite is located close to many places of interest to visit but if you feel like doing nothing it is easy to stay put and enjoy the tranquillity of the forest. There are plenty of good restaurants within a short drive - Babette provided a comprehensive list of the best places to eat.

I can thoroughly recommend Lugane as a lovely place to holiday.

Relaxing lakeside holiday with family.

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from our stay at Lugane and can't rate the house and the hospitality highly enough.

Babette, the owner, ensured that we had all the necessary details to make the arrival straight forward and welcoming - from detailed directions to complimentary drinks from the last remaining vineyard of the area.

The house is set within a large forest a short drive/cycle ride from nearby Sos. It is a peaceful, tranquil location with only the sound of crickets and birds to keep you company. Within the house you have all the facilities listed - my teenage son particularly enjoyed using the toasted sandwich maker and we enjoyed several bbq's at the front of the house.

The house is big enough for a large family, we are a family of four with 13 and 17 year old teenagers. The kitchen, lounge and dining room plus large open plan bedroom provided us with plenty of room to relax. It is artistically decorated with large paintings and antique furniture and remains cool despite the hot weather.

A very short walk away from the house along a forest path is the large swimming lake. The lake is totally private with only one access point, it is in a beautiful natural setting and Babette provides a kayak to explore the corners of the lake. The lake becomes deep quite quickly, within a few steps, so our children loved being able to somersault off inflatables- we spent most days at the lake!

Surrounding the house is a large woodland to explore, on the 2 bikes provided by Babette or by foot. We were lucky enough to spot deer on our very last day. We explored the local night markets particularly enjoying the large one at Nerac and the smaller one at Sos. There is a great bistro in Sos which also has a take away menu for wood fired pizza and in nearby Poudenas there is a cosy pizzeria which serves pizza by the river.

Nearby activities include a 'Total Wipeout' inflatables course at a lake in Casteljaloux or boat trips along the river at Nerac. A drive to the beach is a good day out as was a trip to Bordeaux. Be sure to visit the local vineyard as they are most welcoming and you are able to sample their Floc and Armagnac - great value and delicious.

We had a fantastic time at the house, it was a great find and we'd thoroughly recommend it to others. Thanks again for your kind hospitality.

Owner's Response: Thank you! I'm happy that you had such a good time while here and that the children loved the lake so much. It is great for me to see that others can get as enthusiastic as me about what nature has to offer here. I have only started this year and you were the first family with children and it was nice to see them having fun, even at different ages!

Wow - what a find!

  • 5 of 5

This little house is the perfect place to escape from it all - if you want to!

The pictures, although good, definitely do not do it justice.

There are lots of good things about the property but in my opinion, the best thing was the swimming lake. Amazing! Very clean, fresh water coming from two separate springs. The lake has a clay bottom (very good for the skin). It's huge and completely private. No need for a costume if you want to feel liberated! Short 5 minute walk from the house, located in the garden of the property. Unique and fantastic way to cool down.

The house is decorated very tastefully with Babette's (the owner) art and nice furnishings. Although there is only one bedroom, it would comfortably sleep more than two people.

The bathroom is lovely with a huge, deep bath. Great way to relax whilst looking out the window.

You have all the facilities you could need. We enjoyed a BBQ outside almost every evening though the kitchen is large and fully equipped for cooking proper meals.

The little house is very private and it's relaxing to stay out the front through the day surrounded by nature.

There is plenty to do nearby if you feel like it - Babette can recommend a lovely beach to visit or markets, musical events etc.

Babette and her husband Effe were very friendly. We enjoyed a drink with them (or two, or three)! They also gave us a lovely bottle of wine from the local vineyard to enjoy on our stay.

Sos is small but has everything you might need - grocery shop, pharmacy etc. As well as a nice little restaurant which is very reasonably priced. Sos is only 2km away so you can easily walk there if you want to leave the car at home, or it's a five minute drive to pick up supplies.

I cannot recommend this place highly enough!

Owner's Response: Thank you! It was great having you and I'm happy you enjoyed your time here! I love giving people a little welcome and good-bye aperitif, it seems to ease everyone into the holiday and although after that I let people enjoy their privacy, its good to get to know each other and the place in the beginning. An "apero", as the French say, in the end seems to be the best good-bye...
