A delightful cottage

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was in a lovely quiet location but close enough to all local amenities. Well equipped with everything a family requires. We will certainly recommend it to all our friends & hopefully will return sometime in the future.

Lovely comfortable cottage

  • 4 of 5

Our family of 5 was very comfortable in this charming and deceptively spacious cottage. It is very well equipped and also has plenty of games, DVDs, puzzles and books that kept us all entertained when we were not out exploring the fantastic countryside. There are lots of walks right from the front door and it's a great base from which to explore the area. We loved it and hope to return at some point to do all the other walks and excursions we just didn't have time to do. Thank you!

Lovely, deceptively spacious, cottage in a great location

  • 4 of 5

Bad points: No phone signal, no wi-fi, limited TV channels, couple of miles from nearest shop.

Good points: No phone signal, no wi-fi, limited TV channels, couple of miles from nearest shop.

Our family of 5 adults and 3 children (1, 3 & 5) stayed here for a week. It was surprising how relaxing it was with us all in one house. Having no phones to distract us from the wonderful countryside, meant loads of fresh air, picnics, walks and conversation.

Heights of Abraham and The National Forest Farm Park were particular highlights and Alton Towers is within 30 mins. In between these visits, Dovedale, Tissington and Thorpe Cloud provide delightful places to walk.

The house itself can probably do with a bit of a spruce up, but that is part of the charm. Also the layout, the sitting room with the only TV is upstairs, was odd, but the large kitchen diner is a great community space, and TV was forgotten for the week anyway.

The 3 kids spent the whole time with smiles on their faces, which led to the adults enjoying the break. No cries of I'm bored here.

Great relaxing holiday.

We were comfortable and overall happy with middle cottage in Thorpe.

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was reasonably central to everything we wished to see and explore. The house was very warm on arrival, on a cold day. Once we turned the heating off we were very comfortable and hardly needed it again.it was "summer" after all.

The early issues with the faulty shower and toilet were quickly sorted.

Because we had a whole month there however ,we have.a few points to make, I hope ,constructively.

Cleanliness. Basically okay, but there is definitely a problem with dampness and mould. The upstairs ensuite bathroom had mould on the tiles and in the grooves on the screen door. I had to scrub it weekly to keep some control. I found that leaving the shower door open and the bathroom door all the time helped.

The downstairs double mattress has a real dip in the middle. The upstairs mattress was fabulous.

The downstairs bedroom has a dampness problem too . the floor and mat was wet and needed constant monitoring. Probably not helped with being below ground level. Would a dehumidifier help I wonder.

We all searched in vain for the spot to put the clothesline up.Maybe providing 1 or 2 clothes horses would help.

When we arrived the recycling bin was virtually full and apparently not correctly. When the collectors refused to empty it, we had to re-sort it all. Also the appropriate bin for the food waste is missing.

With only one key for two couples often out at different times,it was awkward. We purchased a key safe for our use to solve the problem. You might consider providing one.

The last point we would like to make is about the aluminium saucepans. People are very aware of the health risks using them. We felt strongly enough about this that we purchased a couple of stainless steel pots to use for ourselves. Providing a set of S/S saucepans would be a wise move, they need not be the top of the range.

And no wifi was a nuisance. Isn't that a sign of the times?

We enjoyed the space the cottage gave us, the good parking, the pretty garden,

the local walks. I personally liked that the stairs were not spiral!

Many thanks from all of us

Lovely week with the family

  • 5 of 5

Really enjoyed our stay in the cottage, everything we needed for family of 7.

The cottage is in a good spot, perfect for lovely walks and scaling the peaks, and a handy pub up the road ( the old dog) with lovely food and The Bluebell a short drive away. Central to visit many other towns Bakewell, Matlock etc

Lovely week had by all, we will return! Thankyou

Simple, clean accommodation, perfect for walking, amazing location

  • 5 of 5

Our family had s lovely time in middle cottage. We could walk straight out from the front door and there are footpaths in every direction. Bakewell, stepping stones, Ashbourne, Buxton and chatsworth are all accessible. Cottage is simple but everything you need is there and it's very clean. We would definitely go back. Thanks jo.
